The built in speakers are a little quiet, but better than my notebook's built in speakers.

When connecting with a Mac, I recommend turning the monitor's auto sleep function off, as it would sleep before I could get my Mac to output video.

(More customer reviews)As an Apple devotee, I feel like a bit of a traitor writing a positive review of an HP product, but WOW this thing is great! I bought it as a second monitor to my MacBook. Apple MacBook MA701LL/A 13.3" Notebook PC (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive) - BlackThe color is brilliant, the contrast is impressive, the text pops and it's just plain beautiful to look at, even if you are working. I literally find myself working on things because I don't want to take my eyes off it.

While I love the look of Apple's cinema monitors, the price point is just so high. The HP w2207 represents a far more reasonable price point.Also, if you're a writer like me, HP makes a clip system for this series of monitors, so you can have a document holder off to the side without having to glue something to side of your monitor untiil the end of time.

If you're an art director, graphic designer, or similar artists thinking, "Ah-ha, this guy's a copywriter. What does he know about monitors?" Well I've been in advertising since 1996 and I've seen all kinds of monitors and this is one of the most impressive I've ever seen at any price.

Also, I took sometime to compare this model to others available for sale from a variety of manufacturers and no one matches the image quality in my opinion. This might seem strange for HP to come out on top in comparison to other companies that specialize in monitors, but the truth is people largely, buy their computers based on the quality and look of the monitor. Apple realized this early on and apparently someone told HP too. I wonder how many HP computer bundles are going to be sold based on the performance of this beauty?

Sure, it takes a little adjustment both on the monitor itself and on the display portion of the system preferences, but it's easy enough.

Plus, the built in speakers are much better than you'd expect from a monitor and the built in 2 USB hub is a nice little touch. More would have been better, but an extra usb port is always nice.

All of this said, there are some flaws with this monitor.

1. The rotating screen landscape-or-portrait function is great, but it doesn't work with the MacBook in Mac mode. What I'm talking about is the ability to physically turn the monitor and have the display go into a portrait arrangement. It's probably too much to ask for from a monitor made by a PC manufacturer, but it would have been nice if the software bundle would have included something for us, Mac people. It still works with the MacBook just fine in landscape mode, but it would have been nice to have this particular bell and whistle.

2. The monitor does have a DVI connection as well as an analog VGA connection, but it only comes with an analog VGA wire. Don't settle for VGA, when there's DVI to be had! Order a DVI wire with your order like this one.Cables To Go 2m DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital Video Cable The response time is appreciably faster than with VGA. It's slight, but it's there.

3. Hopefully, this won't be an issue, but its warranty is for only one year, while others come with a three year warranty. This is a little disconcerting, but I'd rather have one year of looking at this screen than 3 years of looking at washed out or drab monitor.

4. The screen does pick up reflections more readily than other flat panels.

And even with these shortcomings, I've still got to give it 5 stars. It's just that beautiful!

UPDATE: Although mine did not, this monitor now does come with a DVI cable. So you won't need to buy one separately.

HP Personal Media Drive 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive HD10000S Review

(More customer reviews)In theory, this product is a suitable backup solution for users that already own an HP Pavilion desktop.On my particular computer, the Media Drive slid right in to the chassis, booted right up, and all of my important files were backed up within the hour.

That should have been the end of the story.

Unfortunately, within a month the internal cooling fan has started making noise and the entire drive will need to be replaced under warranty.The WD external drive that this HP was supposed to replace lasted 4 years.Just sayin...

9/27/09 Update:When all was said and done, the drive was finally returned and the full purchase amount was refunded.However, the journey to reach that resolution was far longer than I could have ever imagined.Simply put, HP's Technical Support system is atrocious.To finally resolve this problem required no fewer than 5 separate calls to Tech Support.We did a disk scan.We reinstalled drivers.All the while, it was still the cooling fan screeching away.Each call was so stupefyingly bad that I'd provide you with a transcript but you'd never believe it and frankly, I'm trying to block it out of my memory anyway.I'm generally an agreeable sort, but by call #5 I was very nearly at my wit's end.If you decide to purchase this item, I sincerely hope you get a sample that works right out of the box.If not, best of luck.You've been warned...

When I bought this monitor on HP official site, there was only one review on the HP site and no review on newegg or amazon. The only review back then on the HP siteis a 1-star review, complaining about hardware detection problem. This 1-star review really got me nervous. However, I really needed a HD monitor for my recently bought xbox 360 and decided to trust HP (I believed that the 1-star reviewer might've just got a broken one unluckily) and give a shot to this monitor with such good advertised stats.

It turns out that this monitor is great. I received the monitor 2 weeks ago, and waited until now to write a review just because I want to be fair and want to try it for a period of time. Now I want you guys to know that, if you want a monitor with maxed out resolution and great visual effects, and at the same time want to save money as much as possible. This is the right one for you.

HP W2338H 23-Inch Widescreen Monitor Review

Great color, nice and bright display, well made. I traded in my dual 19" monitor set-up and I am very happy.

Pros:
built-in speakers (when you don't need to listen to music at a loud volume)
true high definition
hdmi port
stand allows you to place your keyboard on it to clear up desk space
power button and power indicator on top so it doesn't annoy you
swivels and pivots

Cons:
only has vga and hdmi ports, no dvi
only came with the vga cord, no hdmi (Acer comes with all three)
lousy one-year warrantyI like it. The only comparable in size and cost is the Acer Computer X233H BD 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor. It's got a three-year warranty and vga, hdmi, and a dvi ports. Also comes with all three cables.

I have not compared the two next to each other. If the graphics look as good on the Acer, I'm going to return this HP and get the Acer since it has more ports for better adaptability, more cords so you don't have to spend any money, and a three-year warranty for peace of mind. Also, the Acer has 40000 to 1 contrast ratio vs the HP's 30000 to 1 contrast ratio.

I will update when I get to review the Acer.

Well I checked out the Acer X233H and though it is more flexible and have more bang for the buck, this is definitely a nicer monitor performance wise. First of all, the Acer has a flat picture. Less glare but the picture and graphics of the HP really come out at you. They are sharper and crisper than the Acer.

I really like the location of the power button on the HP because it is on top and not in front starting at you as a distraction if you are using the monitor at little to low light. I have a very nice back-lit Logitech keyboard and when I type in little to no light, there is no glaring power indicator in front of me.

I also think that the stand of the Acer is really weak and though it looks good, is not multi-functional like the HP, where you can store the keyboard, freeing up your desk when you need to use your desk.

With that said, I am keeping my HP and not getting the Acer.

Compaq Presario SR5710F Desktop PC Review

(More customer reviews)This computer is a great value, I actually have purchased two. It has fit my needs exactly. I use them as Home Theater PC's connected to my 47" and 52" Flatscreens in different rooms of the house.

But potential buyers would probably appreciate knowing certain things ahead of time, so I would like to share some of those with you. A couple things I noticed, which are not things they neglect to include on spec sheets, were no extra Serial ATA connections on the mother board, thus no extra SATA Hard Drive, or Blu-ray Burner with SATA and things of that nature.

The good news is it does have two open IDE connections, which in my case worked out perfectly.. I had an old Seagate 250GB IDE, set the IDE as master on the jumper settings, connect it to the blue IDE connection on the mother board, boot the computer, enter bios, simply change the boot sequence in the BIOS because it will default to boot from the IDE Hard Drive when it is added(so if you get a OS not found message at first don't freak out).

Also, (this is stated on the spec sheets) there are only 1PCIx16 and three regular PCI slots.

So choose your upgrades wisely. Other than the added IDE HD, i've added the PNY - NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 512MB PCI Express DDR3 for Graphics, and a Swann PCI DVR 4 Camera input security card with software. I plan on using the other PCI slot for possibly a sound card, or wireless card if the PC ever gets moved away from the router. I'm not saying the computer comes up short on any of the specs, just that some of the things that they don't mention, and you find out after you purchase it. Just thought I would share what i've noticed after buying a couple of them.
Sorry for the long review, but I figured the more the better in this case.

(More customer reviews)We initially purchased 3 of these and then I ordered 4 more.We used them to replace some older retail machines.These are refurbished and some of them do have scratches and dings, but the inner working have totally been gone over and replaced where necessary.Thus far we've been very pleased.I recommend adding another gigabyte of memory, which you can get from Amazon for $20.Being a prime customer I was able to get free 2 day shipping, which made the deal even sweeter.

I was really surprised how fast these machines are considering they aren't dual core, but the pentium 4 does have hyper-threading and of course the adding ram certainly helps with Windows XP Professional.You do get a copy of Windows XP Professional and a new Key-code with the purchase.Also comes with a fairly decent keyboard, but an older crappy roller ball mouse.It works, but for $173 I am not complaining!

I'd even recommend this commercial grade computer for someone looking for a rock solid PC for home use too.

(More customer reviews)I am impressed with the print quality and the features.I have only two complaints: (1) The software installation is horrendous. Instead of using the normal windows installer, HP had to write their own cludgy dohickey.It almost never can find the printer on the network the first time (even if you can ping and load the HTTP interface), requires a reboot, and takes forever farting around doing who-knows-what. Printer driver software should not take 40 minutes to install.(2) It makes startling and disturbing noises.After printing, about 2-3 minutes later when it is nice and quiet, it lets out a gasp like someone who is startled in fright.Also, 3-4 times a day it runs through the initialization process and spends a good 3-4 minutes clattering around noisily.Then a little later it gasps in fright again.This device is not for the jumpy consumer.Combines poorly with heavy caffeine intake.

(More customer reviews)I recently did some much needed upgrades for my home office and this by far my favorite.I first saw it in Best Buy, came home to check for online reviews and to see if I could find it cheaper...I did at Amazon!

It's VERY easy to set up and is crystal clear.( I mean, razor sharp -- no stretched or blurred look anywhere!)However, there was something not quite right with the colors (especially greens) that really bothered me.PLUS the HP "My Display" software that goes with it that contains all of the drivers etc, is not fully functional on non HP machines. (meaning no calibration was available for color or contrast beyond what's built into the monitor itself which was never enough to fix my problem)I was so frustrated and disappointed.(I had been warned of this on another site but thought I'd take a gamble)Well, after trying to hook it up via the HDMI (from VGA) cable that came with it to a new $150 video card -- the colors were still way off and now the screen was all jumpy from that stupid card...(that went right back!) Then, I noticed something when I right clicked on my desktop to adjust my display settings (in XP pro) there was a selection (that had been there all along...duh) that said NVIDIA Control Panel (my internal graphics card) and I was able to calibrate the colors and adjust everything else there and now everything's hunky dory!When it first boots up, the colors look a little neon-ish again but within seconds it goes to the profile I created from my graphics card software.I am sure many would have figured it out sooner than I did, I just wanted to prevent anyone else from beating their head against the wall for a week like I did if I could.(BTW, I have completely removed the video card that I bought and it's hooked up via VGA and it is still crisp and clear)

**BTW, even though the My Display software is largely useless for me, I left it there.For some reason when I uninstalled it, the light that's under the transparent power button on the top of the monitor goes away.That was the only noticeable change after uninstalling it but it annoyed me, so I reinstalled it and it's back on and I just ignore the software**

My husband and I publish a local magazine that is glossy and full color and I am able to do so much more with this monitor than I could before.I can view two (sometimes 3) projects side by side if need be...I love that!And typing an email in outlook looks like it's in about a 60 font!And programs like Illustrator where you need a lot of workspace it's invaluable.I never have to scroll around to grab or view something.My last monitor was a 19" Sony flat panel (that cost more than TWICE what this one did 4 years ago) and I thought it was just fine but once I plugged this lil beauty in I quickly passed it on to my son for his computer.I haven't needed to use the portrait position of the screen so I haven't even tried it.But it came that way when it arrived and was very easy to swivel back around.

One bad thing...don't count on ditching your speakers for the ones that come with this one -- man do they stink!I swear my laptop has better speakers.But it's sort of like people griping that their cell phone camera doesn't take good enough pictures.If you want a good camera buy a camera!If you want a good monitor buy this one and just pretend the speakers aren't even there.The price is way worth it even without the speakers.

HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server Review

Hi All,

I have been using different types of NAS solutions, including a Drobo, for a while now and wanted to give the Windows Home Server solution a shot for my home.I am an IT person by trait.I know that it is fairly easy to build a small home server but I had heard so much about the HP interface that I wanted to give this a shot.Unfortunately I did not buy from AMAZON and had to use a third party to get the item....but that's neither here or there.My review is about the product itself.

The box includes the server, the rescue cd, the restore cd, and a cd for both mac/pc workstations.Remove the item from the box, plug in the power and a ethernet cord to your router/switch and you are ready to roll.The first setup of the client software MUST be done on a PC so that you can set the server up.Very easy and very well made software that will guide you through the entire process.

(A Side Note - HP Recommends that you use a router that has UPNP on it so that the remote capabilities of this server can be used without issues.A list of some routers is below. I was unfortunately using Apple Airport Extreme Base Stations but had a handy dandy D-Link DIR-655 at home...which I switched to immediately and permanently so I can use this server.Product Link for DIR-655: D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router

Once the setup process is concluded (5-10 minutes) you are able to start using the server at once and create user accounts, media syncing, iTunes servers, etc.Very Very simplistic approach.One of the reasons I give it a 5/5.One feature that I want to mention, which puts this device over the others, is that it has a built in plug-in that allows me to use an Amazon s3 account to backup the entire server...normally you would have to use a 3rd party software (jungle disk, which i own) to do this but having it built into the server and having the server manage the backup to the cloud is amazing.

MAC Specific: I wanted to see how this server would work on a MAC and what the ramifications would be of using time machine over the network without having to buy Apple's time capsule.Again, very easy.I installed the software on my macbook pro.It has a section where you define the amount of space you want to use on the server for your time machine backup...10-20-30-40-etc gb....Set the space, it creates the area on the server, hit the start button, go to time machine preferences and use this new hard drive which shows up in the list as HP Mediasmart Server and VOILA....you are time machining away at gigabit speeds.Did I mention the ethernet on this is Gigabit.

Dynamic DNS:We all have some sort of broadband if we consider devices like this and most of us do not opt to pay the exorbitant costs for static ip addresses....instead we just use DHCP from Cable or DSL.Those addresses change..maybe not often..but they do change.One of the features of WHS is to allow you remote access from where ever you may be...and or for a family member to get in and take a look at some files you have stored for them...pictures, music, etc...The server has a built in feature to allow you to use two or three services....TZO (if I remember correctly is one that is included free for one year--allows custom domain names), Microsoft offers a free domain if you have a FREE Microsoft Live ID.I opted for the free service as it allows me to use a simple name like tarun . homeserver . com.You simply pick a name for your server (tarun) and it goes and checks if it is available...if it is you are all set.This is when a UPNP router comes into play so that media smart can set the router up to allow incoming connections to the proper ports for the server....VOILA...works like a charm.I can get to the server from work and upload files, download, etc....very very nice and very easy.

I can get in to much broader detail about the setup but then that would defeat the purpose of this review.I think I have already typed to my hearts content.I really love this device...it is worth its price.I am sure we can all build it cheaper and smaller...but hey...for me I don't want to tinker with hardware since it is time consuming and I would much rather hang out with the kids.

This is a great device which, backed by HP, will only get better with time.

Quick Note 02-28-2009:If you are a PC user then the WHS agent will pull all of your music and pictures to the server and make them available...this includes iTunes music and playlists.If you are a MAC user...u are out of luck for automation...but you can copy your entire iTunes music folder over to the WHS Manually.WHS will make the iTunes library and playlists available to all network users.I moved my iTunes from my mac to the WHS and then simply told iTunes the new location...so if I add new music, podcasts, etc...I dont have to sync directories...iTunes will just add them to the WHS Music Folder...which is mounted on the mac as a volume.Hope that helps a bit.

ps..Firefly is what WHS/HP use for iTunes....something which I believe can be installed on a drobo with droboshare.

UPDATE 03-06-09 - If you are a opendns user then there may be some issues in regard to pinging and browsing to your whs using the connector on pc's.There is a simple fix...add an exception at [...] for your server.Example: server.local where server is your server name and .local is your home.I did it today and my pc was able to find the server without issue.Some routers may not experience this problem...but I had it with both the apple airport extreme and the d-link.A simple fix....

Quick Update 03/13/2009 - Friday the 13th:
1.The server is backing up to Amazon S3 perfectly almost every day and I have not had one issue yet.

2.A FUN Project to try is to download the ps3 media server which is freeware that can be installed on WHS to automatically stream your music, videos, pictures, etc on to your PS3...if you have one.I will post a link in the comments section.

3.Last but not least for today - If you want to remove that annoying reminder to install Mcafee.....you can check the ignore button but that item remains in the list forever....How to remove it?There is a share from the mediasmart called SOFTWARE which houses certain files.One of the files is a rather large file....larger then 50mb if I am not wrong....I wish I could remember the name.That is the McAfee add-in installer...once it is removed from the software share and the server is restarted..u will never see it mentioned again and dont have to worry about checking off ignore.

I know this review is getting LONG...but I want anyone that owns and or is considering buying one of these units to have as much information as possible.Its not easy to drop $600 these days and end up with something you may never use.I sincerely hope my review helps you make the right decision.

Quick NOTE: 03/24/09 - Microsoft has released powerpack two for WHS.I have also configured, manually, my new dual band Apple Airport Extreme to work with WHS.You simply need to forward 3 ports to your WHS box from within the Airport Utility Software.I believe somone has posted a link in the comments section also.....

Update 03/26/09 - This was pointed out to me in the comments section as I was unaware.You are able to completely image a Windows PC and recover it via a CD that is provided by HP.The initial backup takes a while depending on how much space you are using but once its done you feel better knowing your machine can be fully recovered if the hard drive dies, etc..

Update 05/05/09 - (happy cinco de Mayo) - I just wanted to chime in and let everyone know that a new version of the WHS software is available from HP.Make sure you update your units so that they have the latest and greatest.The new features allow for automatic video conversion for any videos you drop in designated folders.Also, HP has a iPhone and iPod touch software which connects to the server to allow for music streaming and photo viewing.AWESOME features that keep making this an AWESOME addition to anyone's home network.

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA) Review

(More customer reviews)I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake.I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus.This new machine is definitely a major improvement.

First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system.I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it.

It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet.It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length - it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back).It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black - CMYK) so this can be costly.The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color.It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long.And when the toner is low, you get a warning.You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages).

The Bad: I'll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder.I may be doing something wrong, but I've found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time.Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I'm done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side.You can't really do that with this.And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best.You can't simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it.You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print.It did print generic Avery labels okay though.

All in all, it is great.Oh, and there's one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn't know these terms before).For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the 'Finishing' tab and selected 'Print on Both Sides' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything.I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect.

If you don't need to have this printer on a network, and you don't need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser.Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars.I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it's superb.Get yours now - the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go.You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don't have one. HP Color LaserJet 4500N Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I have used my 4500 for about 6 months now and could not be more in love with it. I have owned about 6-7 color inkjets before this and finally made the big move to color laser. You can print perfect photos on just about any kind of paper.I would like to see some "true" glossy paper on the market for photos, however. Most specialty papers for inkjet printers (mostly glossy) will not work with the laserjet because of the heat. Keep in mind you can not do heat transfers with a laserjet printer. There are four cartridges that make up the 4500's color. They are VERY expensive, but I am still using the same one that came with the printer and have printed well over a thousand photos. Long term is much cheaper to run than an inkjet.

I have listened to other laptop speakers, and these sound very good. The keyboard is wonderful to type on. I had to uninstall some bloatware, but that was expected. Will upgrade to a 12 cell battery as soon as I can afford to. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a well made machine. Read the specs listed above and you will find that this machine has everything you would want in a laptop or desktop replacement. Con: somewhat large and slightly heavy, but then again your going to carry it in a bag anyways!
