iPad Still Favorite in Indonesia, But Many Rivals Lurk

Mandarin teacher Kendy Tanujaya says his decision to purchase an iPad over other tablet computers was a no-brainer.

“I already had other Apple products, so that made synchronizing them easy,” the 26-year-old told the Jakarta Globe. “I also use the gadgets to help me teach.”

For Cissylia, a 21-year-old student and model, it was more a question of brand appeal.

“It’s made by Apple, so you know it’s bound to be better than the other tablets,” she says.

That might have been true in early 2010, when Apple’s iPad was the only game in town. But with tablets running on Google’s Android operating system now accounting for 30 percent — and rising — of global market share, consumers are flush with choices.

Apple dominates with 61 percent of market share worldwide, although exact figures for Indonesia are not available because of the proliferation of gray-market iPads — devices that were imported into the country well before their local release date.

For the Indonesian market, the real boon will be the host of lower-priced Android tablets made by Asian manufacturers such as Samsung and Acer, says technology blogger Wicaksono.

“I think the focus in the Indonesian market will be price,” he said.

“As long as people can afford it, they’ll buy it. So I think the cheaper the tablet, the better.”

That puts devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, widely considered the closest rival to the iPad, in an enviable position. A 16GB Galaxy retails for Rp 5.85 million ($684), while a similarly equipped iPad 2 — with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity — sells for Rp 6.5 million. Mid-market tablets like the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 and Acer Iconia Tab A500 are priced from Rp 4 million to Rp 5 million.

Other than the price, Wicaksono said, consumers base their buying decisions on how they plan to use their tablets and the features available.

Lucky Sebastian, a smartphone enthusiast in Bandung who created the 9,000-member gadget community mailing list Gadtorade (Gadget to Trade) in 2001, agrees Apple’s premium price will hurt it in the Indonesian market.

He says another area where Android tablets can grab market share is the nascent market for smart phone-sized tablets. With screens no larger than 18 centimeters, these devices present a handier alternative for mobile users than 25-centimeter devices such as the iPad and Galaxy Tab.

“At present, there are almost as many Android users in Indonesia as there are iPad users,” Lucky said. Among the latter, he adds, the decision to go for an iPad is often not carefully considered or is simply in response to current trends.

“People tend to buy the most expensive gadgets without considering whether it meets their actual needs,” he said.

“Indonesians think that the more expensive something is, the better it must be. You also have people who buy it because they see other people getting them, and so it becomes a must-have item.”

From his own experience, Lucky said four out of five iPad users do not know how to install apps or transfer music, pictures or other documents to their devices after buying them. They have to rely on sales staff to walk them through the process.

But he acknowledged the appeal of the iPad’s design and build, as well as its ease of use.

“It’s phenomenal — it’s made well and marketed well, and Apple has done very well getting people to want their products,” he said.

So given the array of choices, what should consumers go for? That depends on how they plan to use the device, Lucky said.

For entertainment purposes, he adds, the iPad is the best choice, with half of the more-than-300,000 apps available for it centered on gaming and entertainment.

But for work purposes, Android devices such as the ASUS Eee Pad are more appropriate, given their seamless integration with Google’s suite of services, including Google Docs, and inclusion of a memory card reader for easy data transfer.

Devices like the Eee Pad and the Motorola Xoom also come with optional docking stations that allow users to type on a physical keyboard, as well as USB ports that allow them to connect a variety of devices.

Android’s open-source nature, combined with the fact that tablets running it come in a wide variety of specifications, make these devices more customizable than iPads.

Ultimately, Wicaksono said, both platforms have their advantages and disadvantages and it will be up to the individual user to make the decision that is right for them.

ClearOne Chat 50 Personal USB Speakerphone Review

ClearOne Chat 50 Personal USB Speakerphone
Average Reviews:

I use the chat50 mainly with skype, I also use it when traveling not only as a phone but to play music from my laptop. The result is far better than what you get from the small speakers in the computer.

When using skype, the quality of the sound is excellent. I bought the USB model so I do not have to carry a power source around.

The chat50 is also nicely built, has a feeling of quality (it better be for the price!)

Overall, very satisfied.

Arrived with something rattling around in it - but works fine. Software is ok and picture wall is also interesting. iphone app is not that useful, can only search though all files that have been uploaded - folders are not shown. UPDATE 1 month later.AVOID THIS!! Software crashes and files on the drive have also been found corrupted. Tried to work with Hitachi online help and support is depressing at best. They have no interest in helping issues to be fixed.I would not reccomend buying this at all.
-->UPDATE several months later: Hitachi offered to fix my drive, but in the end it looks like it could be something with my PC specifically, although I will never really know. The drive itself has been working fine. Only anoying part is it launches the install app to install the LifeStudio software everytime you plug it in. In the end the support I got from Hitachi was eventually ok - but we never did get the software to work on my laptop. I just use RSYNC (rsync.net) software now and it works great with the drive and has an online option. You need to get the older version to do drive to drive backups, but it works great, is simple but still tells you exactly what files are beings affected.

Audioengine 2 - PC multimedia speakers - 30 Watt (total) - 2-way - satin black Review

I got the A2 for use as a portable studio monitor when recording music with my laptop. As such, I think its form factor is unmatched: I don't know of any other 4"W x 6"H powered full-range (2.0) speaker of this quality.

I appreciate the stated frequency response figure, which is offered with plus/minus 2dB tolerance -- unlike other iPod or computer speakers. The cabinet is made from MDF (medium density fiberboard), a material used in many of the most well-regarded audiophile speakers. The Kevlar woofer and quality binding posts also inspire confidence. A protective grille and front-mounted volume control might have been handy, but that's a matter of preference. I got the white (A2W) model which is understated and attractive.

I'm comparing the A2 with the larger (5.5"W x 8.5"H) M-Audio Studiophile DX4 speaker, which is intended for home music studios. The DX4 is actually a little less expensive, but too bulky for portable use. The DX4 comes with individual frequency response measurements which in my case indicated close pair-matching and equally flat response to that of the A2. Anyone who has built speakers knows, however, that on-axis frequency response measurements don't tell the whole story. I did not compare the A2 with larger or more expensive speakers, and my emphasis is on use as a monitor for mixing music.

Dynamics. The A2's little 3" woofer is surprisingly dynamic: turn up the volume control and you can feel the air pumping in front of the cone and the slot. The speaker sounds balanced at both low and high volumes. A speaker this size is of course only for near-field individual listening. It is not for watching movies from across the room. The DX4's 4.5" woofer has more than twice the surface area and is capable of higher sound pressure levels.

Imaging. Probably a consequence of the well-damped MDF enclosure, the A2 images nicely. Instruments do not seem to come from the speakers but from the space between them. The DX4 had better depth and openness however. I think these characteristics are partially due to the DX4's low-frequency extension and high-frequency dispersion.

Frequency balance. The A2 delivers more bass than you would expect from a 3" woofer. Of course, there is nothing below 60Hz. The mid and upper bass are a little pronounced. (The effect is worse when resting directly on a desktop, so try raising them on stands.) This makes a grand piano sound more like an upright. The DX4 manages to go deeper and sound less boxy. The A2's midrange is smooth and natural sounding. The A2's treble character is quite different from the DX4's. The DX4 is a little hyped without being harsh: grunge guitar has more of an edge and cymbals have a more pronounced decay, yet high-hats sound similar to the A2.

Mixing/Mastering. The DX4 has better bass extension and treble clarity and lets you hear individual instruments more easily, so is well-suited to mixing. On the other hand, the DX4's perceived treble "zing" may in some cases lead a recording engineer to produce dull-sounding mixes. The A2 is probably more representative of small consumer playbacks systems (bookshelf speakers and car speakers), yet is less colored and more dynamic than similar-sized powered speakers. Therefore it offers a useful comparison for balancing mixes and for assessing the final mix. Its small size and smooth midrange make it suitable for portable monitoring.

Incidentally, the A2 has both RCA and 1/8" stereo inputs which are combined if both are in use, whereas the DX4 does not do this as advertised. I was also pleased with their customer service, which was responsive to emails and phone calls.

Apple to Introduce Latest iPhone on Oct. 4

Apple will introduce a new version of the iPhone at an Oct. 4 event, the first upgrade of its best-selling product since Steve Jobs resigned as chief executive officer.

“Let’s talk iPhone,” Apple said in an invitation to the gathering at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

The new iPhone will include a better camera and faster processor, people familiar with the matter said earlier this year. Introduced in 2007, the iPhone accounts for about half of Apple’s revenue.

Jobs, who resigned as chief executive officer and turned leadership of the company over to Tim Cook on Aug. 24., is now Apple’s chairman.

Apple showed off new features of the iPhone’s revamped operating system during Jobs’ last major Apple event, a developers conference in June. The new software, called iOS 5, includes new notification and text messaging systems. The company also said in June that it will debut iCloud, which lets users to wirelessly access music, pictures and other files across different Apple devices.

The new iPhone could be Apple’s best-selling product yet. Apple may sell 110 million iPhones in 2012, a faster pace than this year, when nearly 40 million were sold during the first half of the calendar year, according to Mike Abramsky, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets in Toronto.

Pent-up demand may help sales, said Maynard Um, an analyst at UBS Securities. Apple is unveiling a new model 16 months after the iPhone 4 debuted, compared with the 12 months between previous model updates. In addition to the stronger processor and improved camera, the new iPhone may have faster networking technology, improved graphics performance and potentially be thinner and lighter, Um said.

This may be the last time Apple can wait so long between new iPhones as rivals including Samsung Electronics and HTC introduce competing smartphones using Google’s Android operating system.

The new iPhone probably won’t be less expensive than the current model, which is sold to wireless carries for $600, said Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, in a research report. Service providers generally subsidize the price for customers. Instead of making the phone cheaper, Apple is likely to drop the price of the current model iPhone to give consumers a more affordable alternative, Munster said.

The new model may include voice-recognition software, Munster said. He speculated that the “Let’s Talk iPhone” wording of the invite may refer to such speech-based features. Apple purchased a speech-recognition software company called Siri last year.

In the first full quarter on the market, Apple may sell 25 million iPhones, Munster said, adding that this estimate for the period ending in December may be “conservative.”

Western Digital 2TB SATA Green Power eco-friendly Hard Drive WD20000CSRTL Review

Western Digital 2TB SATA Green Power eco-friendly Hard Drive WD20000CSRTL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(See below for an update!)

Original review: This product (WD20000CSRTL) is a regular WD20EADS drive in retail packaging.I was worried it'd be a different drive, but it's not.

Unlike the "OEM" version (WD20EADS) it comes in a big-ish box and with an "install guide" (good if you haven't tried installing a new drive, I guess), an SATA cable and 4 mounting screws. The packaging is obviously more wasteful, but considering the bad packaging reviews the OEM drives get here, maybe its a good thing. If it's the same price as the WD20EADS then I think it's a good deal, even if just for the better packaging.

*Update July 2010* As others have pointed out; they are now selling WD20EARS drives under this ASIN.I use OS X, Linux and FreeBSD so it makes no difference to me; but if you use certain really old versions of Windows (Windows XP) you won't be able to use the full capacity (easily?) or something like that. The recent drives we ordered like this came individually packaged in WD packaging, but with no cables or anything.

*Update September 2010* Depending on the weather, phase of the moon etc you could now get any 2TB Western Digital "green" drive when you order this item. There are other Amazon product IDs that'll give you the same but for lower cost, too - so no longer recommended!!

Amazon Launches iPad Rival, the "Kindle Fire"

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos holds up the new Kindle Fire at a news conference during the launch of Amazon's new tablets in New York on Tuesday. (Reuters Photo/Shannon Stapleton)

Amazon unveiled a tablet computer, Kindle Fire, on Wednesday in a challenge to Apple’s market-leading iPad.

The Kindle Fire has a seven-inch (17.78-centimeter) screen, smaller than the iPad’s 9.7 inches (24.6 cms), and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Seattle-based online retail giant announced at a launch event in Manhattan.

The new tablet will reportedly cost $199, less than half the cost of an iPad, and will be available to consumers on Nov. 15.

Presenting the new tablet to the press, Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos said the Kindle Fire features a new Web browser called Amazon Silk.

He said Kindle Fire owners would have access to the 11,000 films and television shows in the Amazon library and the 17 million songs.

According to technology analysts, an Amazon tablet could pose the most serious challenge yet to Apple’s dominance of the fast-growing market for touchscreen tablet computers.

Sony’s New Tablet Looks Good Without Much More to Offer

Sony S Tablet captures much of what’s good and much of what’s frustrating about the one-time king of consumer electronics.

Not content to stamp out just another cookie-cutter iPad clone, Sony has come up with a distinctive design. The tablet also incorporates ties to the company’s vast collection of content, including movies and music. It even runs PlayStation games.

Yet, as with so many things Sony these days, the Tablet S sounds much more appealing than the reality turns out to be: Its good ideas are undermined by its execution.

Sony S Tablet , currently available for order and in stores next week, runs the Honeycomb operating system, Google’s tablet-optimized version of its Android mobile-device software.

At $500 for a 16-gigabyte, Wi-Fi-only model and $600 for 32 gigabytes, it’s priced the same as Apple iPad 2 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch the best of the current crop of Android tablets.

The device’s 9.4-inch screen is just a bit smaller than the Apple iPad 2 , and is actually a touch lighter, at approximately 598 grams, versus 601 grams for the iPad. There’s no mistaking it, though, for an iPad, a Galaxy Tab or any of the legions of other Honeycomb tablets cramming the aisles at Best Buy.

Leaving to others the competition to produce the thinnest, flattest device, Sony S Tablet has created a sort of rounded-wedge case for the Tablet S. The metaphor is a folded-over magazine, with the teardrop-shaped thick side acting to prop the device up slightly when laid horizontally for typing or to watch a movie.

The shape takes some getting used to. It felt quite natural when I was holding it vertically, as if I were reading a book or online magazine. In landscape mode, though, I initially had a hard time. If the thin side was down, the thick part tended to dip.

I eventually came to prefer holding it with the thick edge down — opposite to the way I had to position it when I wanted to tap out an e-mail.

Ultimately, I didn’t mind the shape and even give Sony extra credit for trying to, as Apple used to exhort us, “think different.” My real problem isn’t what they did, but how they did it.

Achieving its light weight, for example, means a case that feels cheap and plasticky on the sides and back. The on-off switch and volume controls are poorly placed along an inside edge.

Plugging in the charger is difficult: You have to align its protruding tabs just so, and I kept accidentally yanking the cable out when I picked up the device or tried to use it while charging. And the pull-out door covering the micro USB port and SD card slot feels like it’s just waiting to break off.

The brain of the Tablet S is Nvidia’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor, the same chip that powers the Galaxy Tab. Yet the pre-production unit I was testing felt appreciably more sluggish than the Galaxy when scrolling through Windows or launching applications.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1-Inch, it has Flash — as in the Adobe software for viewing many Web videos and animations. But it has no flash — as in a light for its rear-facing camera when you shoot stills or video. (There’s a front-facing camera as well, for video chatting.) I was easily able to get a full day’s use from the Tablet S battery, but at eight hours, it isn’t quite up to the iPad 2’s 10.

Unusually for a Sony product, I found more to like on the software front. The S includes an app that turns it into a universal remote control for your various home audio-visual devices. I was able to control not just Sony products but also a Panasonic TV and Motorola set-top box.

The Tablet S’s performance felt considerably zippier when I was playing games than when I was doing more mundane tasks. You’ll be able to download PlayStation games directly to the device, and it comes with two pre-installed, the vintage Crash Bandicoot and Pinball Heroes — here’s a tip for the latter: Hold the tablet with the fat side down to keep your thumbs from accidentally hitting the Home button in a flipper frenzy.

The preproduction model I was using couldn’t access Sony’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services, so I couldn’t tell you how well they work. Ditto for the app that turns the Tablet S into an e-book viewer compatible with Sony’s line of Reader devices; it wasn’t yet available.

The S is Sony’s first tablet, but not its last. The company is getting ready to introduce another, the P, with an even more unusual design: twin screens that fold up like an oversize eyeglass case.

In a world of all-but-indistinguishable Android devices, it’s good to see Sony innovating and taking risks. But style points don’t overcome its practical shortcomings.
