Canon i860 Photo Printer Review

Canon i860 Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for a printer that can print photo-store quality prints quickly, quietly...AND print high-quality text...then look no further...The low cost, separate (and relatively inexpensive) ink tanks, and separate black ink for text are just an added bonus!
I spent months looking and shopping around, and finally settled on the i860 after going to a store and testing the printers side-by-side.True, at the highest photo quality, a lot of these printers will look alike...but after "looking under the hood," I decided the Canon was the way to go...Here is the skinny:
"Top Ten Reasons To Buy This Printer"
(1) Great photo quality prints in a jiffy (some say like 43 seconds, but it seems faster);
(2) Quiet (it almost whispers);
(3) Good print quality on regular text/regular paper;
(4) Easy to set-up, and the documentation is excellent (took me less than 10 minutes);
(5) Fantastic software package that comes with the unit...try the "Easy Web Print" and I guarantee that you won't be disappointed;
(6) Ink tanks are separate (meaning you don't have to replace a whole 3, 4 or 5 color tank when one color runs out) and relatively inexpensive;
(7) The paper that works best with the printer is made by Canon, which is also relatively inexpensive;
(8) Their customer support is phenominal (I had one small issue that turned out to have nothing to do with the printer itself), and their support staff not only knew what they were doing, but I didn't have to hold for an hour;
(9) It's very moderately priced; and
(10) True borderless printing (no perforated paper).
"Top Six Reasons Not To Buy This Printer" (can't think of 10!)
(1) Maximum print size is 8 1/2 x 11.If you like to print posters, find another printer;
(2) No LCD screen, so the printer needs to be controlled from the computer (or Camera if you have PhotoBridge on your camera) and you cannot review pictures on the printer before you print;
(3) No USB or Parallel cable in the box (why not, I ask?);
(4) Photo quality prints do not look great on other papers besides Canon;
(5) It's really big;
(6) The 4x6 paper try is a tad bit awkward;
I hope this helps!

Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server Review

Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The tech support was prompt and knowledgeable.The unit has good range which seems to be limitied more by the class of the PDA that is trying to acess it.

HOWEVER this product has a VERY serious design deficiency that makes it UNSUITABLE FOR USE at any price!!!!Belkin tech support has confirmed that there is no way to reset the unit to the original factory settings if you can not acess it via the built in web manager.Belkin tech support also confirmed that there is also a flaw in the unit that will cause some user passwords to not be accepted.Once this happens, this will essentially require returning the unit for complete replacement. I know of no other networking product that has such a serious design flaw (all other networking devices I am aware of have at least a reset button somewhere or a "power on" sequence to handle these inevitable situations).It also makes the unit unusable for any scenario where if you make a change to the settings, you can not afford to be without it for the time to swap it out.

An obvious problem for you, me and Amazon here!

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer Review

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I selected this copier/printer based on price, features and the Canon name.I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08.It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila!I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.

- Its quick
- Makes clear, clean copies
- Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud
- Top sheet feeder works well, even for multiple sheets
- Toner cartridge was a breeze to install
- Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly, even from another PC on the network
- Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE, not a starter.For those who do not know about this: many new printers, especially when being sold at LOW prices, are sold with a toner cartridge that's only good for a few hundred copies at most.Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge.This is often how the mfg's will move more units, by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner.

With the rebate I couldn't pass this up, although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC.This one DOES NOT.It is only a printer and copier.I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.

I would recommend this printer.

HP LaserJet 1320n Monochrome Network Printer Review

HP LaserJet 1320n Monochrome Network Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As always, here's my honest review with some background.

I've been looking for a good laser printer that I could have on my network for a while now.I have a small office and am an aspiring teacher (currently student teaching).When I can't get to the copy machine at school, I wanted something I could use to do some "mass printouts" for my students.I had an old NEC Superscript, but it frequently paused between pages for a breather and was generally slow.

If you don't need the network card (print server) built into this printer, then the 1320 (not 1320n) would be an amazing value!For me, I wanted the networking, so I was willing to spend the extra money.Setup was relatively simple, changing the IP address was easy, and I was up and running, printing from my Windows XP machines AND my MacOS X (10.3.7) machines.

Now for the printer itself.I'm very impressed with the build quality.Printers have been turning into plastic junk lately, but this one still has metal guts, metal supports holding the paper in the bottom tray, etc.Certain parts seem like generic plastic, but overall it has a nice fit and finish.

Print speeds are amazingly swift!The first thing I put this little print-monster through was a 70-copy worksheet for my students.It took sheet after sheet without a pause!It might grab paper just when the previous sheet is half way through because they seem to keep flying out!Duplex printing was a bonus with this unit - handy in a pinch, but it slows the print speed by about 2-3 times - because it pulls the paper back inside and reprints on the other side...Either way, I dare you to find a quality printer like this, with a duplexer for this price!

Instant on fuser sends paper printing within 8 seconds.Overall, I'm very pleased!I was tempted to get the next model up (2420) but the price difference with no standard duplexer killed that deal.

Wish list?An tiny LCD display telling me whats going on would be nice - but it has lights which do the job just fine.Also - and I'm just dreaming here, it would be nice to see an option for this printer to staple printouts...I know, I've been around pricey copy machines too much!

So, pick yourself up this printer!You won't be sorry.The print quality is very crisp - your well-known HP laser quality, and even graphics are suitable!Its B&W (no color printing), but the money saved on just one toner from time to time as apposed to inkjet cartridges every other month is mind boggling!...and how often do you need color printing?Some may, but for the bulk of what I print, B&W is fine.

High recommended! ...feel free to contact me if you have any questions that I might be able to help you with.

HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q3950A#ABA) Review

HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am impressed with the print quality and the features.I have only two complaints: (1) The software installation is horrendous. Instead of using the normal windows installer, HP had to write their own cludgy dohickey.It almost never can find the printer on the network the first time (even if you can ping and load the HTTP interface), requires a reboot, and takes forever farting around doing who-knows-what. Printer driver software should not take 40 minutes to install.(2) It makes startling and disturbing noises.After printing, about 2-3 minutes later when it is nice and quiet, it lets out a gasp like someone who is startled in fright.Also, 3-4 times a day it runs through the initialization process and spends a good 3-4 minutes clattering around noisily.Then a little later it gasps in fright again.This device is not for the jumpy consumer.Combines poorly with heavy caffeine intake.

Epson Stylus Color 3000 Inkjet Printer Review

Epson Stylus Color 3000 Inkjet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this printer for the last three years. As a visual designer and a fine artist I have used this to print all sorts of design projects, illustrations, and web pages.
The colors this produces are a better match to what I see onscreen than any other color printer I have used (HP deskjets, HP color laser, Apple color laser). Even at "normal" quality on cheap paper, the prints are good enough to frame. I used this printer with photo quality paper to print the portfolio I show at job interviews. The dithering is subtle, with none of the dark-dot-amongst-light-dots problems that cause a speckled look on cheap printers.
The colors are vibrant, but ACCURATE (unlike the HP printers that always print colors oversaturated). As other reviewers have noted, the ink cartridges (separate for each color!) last a long time, typically several months with heavy usage.
The printing is fast, even at high quality, much faster than color laser printers, and comparable to most desktop printers.
The flat paper tray (as opposed to inclined) rarely jams. The tray can hold about 50 sheets of paper, so it is good for use in an office environment being shared by many people.
This can handle even light card stock, although I have had some varieties of 80# card stock JAM and refuse to go through. Unfortunately, the stock is forced to go through the rollers, and there is no way to open the back to allow it to go straight through and avoid jamming on heavy stock. This is the only bad thing about this printer.

HP Color LaserJet 4500N Printer Review

HP Color LaserJet 4500N Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used my 4500 for about 6 months now and could not be more in love with it. I have owned about 6-7 color inkjets before this and finally made the big move to color laser. You can print perfect photos on just about any kind of paper.I would like to see some "true" glossy paper on the market for photos, however. Most specialty papers for inkjet printers (mostly glossy) will not work with the laserjet because of the heat. Keep in mind you can not do heat transfers with a laserjet printer. There are four cartridges that make up the 4500's color. They are VERY expensive, but I am still using the same one that came with the printer and have printed well over a thousand photos. Long term is much cheaper to run than an inkjet.

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays Review

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using HP stuff since the first scientific calculator, the HP-32, that came out in 1973. It used to be rock solid, designed by engineers to be used by engineers. Sadly, it's now cheap junk. The scanners in HP's all-in-one's seemed designed to fail in the thirteenth month after purchase.

Some of HP's recent printers do not even implement their own Printer Control Language properly (HP PCL).

This Brother printer works. It implements PCL5 correctly, as well as its emulation of PostScript. I've networked computers for fifteen years, so setup went very easily. The hardest part was hauling the CD-ROM to the various computers on the network, since Windows did not have the driver built in. A no-brainer.

The supplies work out to 1.4 cents a page (toner and drum). Hard to beat that.

HP Officejet Pro K850 Printer. Wide format Color Inkjet Printer. Up To 24PPM Blk Review

HP Officejet Pro K850 Printer. Wide format Color Inkjet Printer. Up To 24PPM Blk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We now have three of the K850 printers in use, one with a built in print server, second paper tray, and duplexer.So far, the printers have proved to be reliable, fast, and comparatively inexpensive to operate.Power on, pre-print, and post-print noise may be objectionable to users who are located close to the printer.

Capable of using the same HP 10 black and HP 11 individual color ink cartridges, as well as replacement print heads as the HP Business Ink Jet 1100d and HP Business Ink Jet 1200d, the K850 shares the same low, per page operating cost as the 1100d and 1200d printers.Full page color photographs print in roughly 32 seconds, with a roughly eight second delay prior to the start of printing; similar prints from other printers may require from one to five minutes to print the same full page color photograph.White horizontal lines were present in the full page color photograph, possibly indicating that one or two of the nozzles in the print heads, shipped with the new printer, are defective.

The printer handles paper sizes up to 13" x 19", so it easily handles B size (tabloid, 11" x 17") paper commonly used for small engineering prints and foldable newsletters.The printer software installs without problem, although a reboot will likely be required.For network capable K850 printers, the software install automatically finds K850 printers on the network, and adds a "HP Standard TCP/IP Port" to the computer configuration for communication with the printer.For non-network capable K850 printers, both USB and parallel port connections are supported.

Positives:
* Uses ink that is compatible with other printer models, helping to keep operating costs down.
* Fast printing for full page color, and even faster black printing with spot color.
* Large format color printing, which is helpful for quick generation of engineering prints.
* Nearly idiot proof print cartridge replacement - light turns on to indicate the color that needs to be replaced, printing stops automatically, user replaces ink cartridge, and printing continues.
* Separate ink cartridges and print heads means less aligning of print cartridges/heads after ink cartridge replacement, larger capacity ink cartridges, and lower operating cost.

Negatives:
* Minimal install of HP software from the CD requires at least 100MB.
* Low capacity HP 13 print cartridges ship with the printer.
* Power-on, pre-print, and post-print noise, just like the Business Ink Jet 1100d and 1200d.However, there is very little noise produced while printing.
* Cheap plastic cover over the print cartridges, similar to that used on the 1200d.
* Large footprint.

Samsung ML-1630W Personal Wireless Mono Laser Printer Review

Samsung ML-1630W Personal Wireless Mono Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm giving five stars for the unit itself, but getting it operational was another matter altogether.

Living in a smallish Manhattan apartment, I needed a compact laser printer that wouldn't look conspicuous on the bookcase of my multifunction living room/dining room/office.I figured its low profile and sleek design would actually camouflage it quite nicely with my stereo components.But the main thing was I needed it to be WIRELESS, since the computer itself is on the other side of the room, and I didn't want to run wires all over the place.

The unit came packed with a "Mac Quick Set-Up" diagram -- only pictures, not even words explaining how to set up the unit (I guess they figured they'd save the cost of multi-language translations).The diagram didn't explain much, so I popped in the set-up CD in my Mac and went through the steps.The software downloaded, but the unit wasn't working.In fact, the computer wasn't even recognizing that there WAS a printer.

So I called Samsung support, and after waiting on hold for 20 minutes, was connected to a woman named "Lisa" who could barely speak English.After stumbling through the language barrier and her insultingly simple troubleshooting questions ("Is your computer turned on?"), we finally got to the heart of the problem:she said I needed to HARD WIRE the printer to my wireless router."But the printer itself is supposed to be wireless," I protested."No, it's wireless because it goes through your router," she insisted."But that's stupid," I retorted, "because if I wanted to hard-wire my printer to my wireless router, I could have done that with ANY printer!Where's the wireless functionality of THIS printer?"

Of course she couldn't help me, but she gave me another Samsung tech support number to call -- only, of course, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.Convenient!Because we're all at home hooking up our computers during those hours, right?

I called Samsung from work the next day.The guy started walking me through the troubleshooting steps."Hang on, I'm writing this all down," I said."Wait," he said, "you're not in front of your computer now?""No," I said, "I'm at WORK right now -- just like you."

Well, it seemed that English-challenged "Lisa" from the night before failed to give me the number for the support office that's open AFTER hours, which this guy shared with me.So I called later that evening, and was immediately connected to a guy in Seattle who sounded like he's barely out of high school.FINALLY -- someone who knows what he's talking about!!

"Steve" walked me through a labyrinthine maze of commands and menus in my computer, having me enter series of numbers and periods - closing this box, opening another -- entering more numbers -- reopening -- for about 30 minutes.Then he had me connect my wireless printer with a USB cable to my wireless router.Apparently the initial "handshake" with the computer requires this.Once the "handshake" is over, you can disconnect the USB cable, and VOILA -- the printer is now completely wireless forever and ever, amen.

Long story short, I ended up setting up my printer on a shelf in my hall closet, and amazingly the wireless functionality is strong enough to pierce my 8-inch thick prewar plaster walls, even with the heavy mahogany closet door closed.

I would highly recommend this printer to anyone who needs an attractive compact laser printer, as well as the flexibility of setting it up with no cords (except, of course, the power cord).However, Samsung should just do everyone a favor and rather than including a set-up diagram and CD, just tape a business card to the top of the unit with Steve's phone number.

Total set-up time:4 hours.

If any graphic design artists need to print in CMYK and wide format, this is probably the best printer you can get in terms of cost and quality.The 88 ink is super cheap and it pumps out a LOT of pages.If you plan on doing a lot of printing but don't wanna pay as much as a laser jet printer, you should use a printer that uses the 88 ink.For 20.99 this cartridge can give you 1200 pages.What other cartridge on the market can do that for so cheap???What's even better is how 34 bucks you can get the XL and the XL can do 2400 pages.Again, what cartridge do you know of can give you 2400 pages for 34 bucks?It's a great printer at a great price when you can find it on sale.

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L) Review

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer

Bought this for the wife to do some scrapbooking.Thought for sure the other reviewers must have been doing something wrong. Nope.This thing has a mind of it's own...especially if you try to print anything larger than 8 1/2 X 11.HP has not perfected home user wide format printers yet.

I returned it for the Canon i9900 wide format printer which, granted, was $100 more but the quality is simply amazing.91 positive reviews can't be wrong.I was so impressed with the Canon quality that I scooped up a PIXMA 780 All-In-One for myself.Also a tremnedous number of positve reviews there as well.Much cheaper ink, better quality - how did I miss these the first time.Live and learn from my experiences.
