ClearOne Chat 50 Personal USB Speakerphone Review

ClearOne Chat 50 Personal USB Speakerphone
Average Reviews:

I use the chat50 mainly with skype, I also use it when traveling not only as a phone but to play music from my laptop.The result is far better than what you get from the small speakers in the computer.

When using skype, the quality of the sound is excellent. I bought the USB model so I do not have to carry a power source around.

The chat50 is also nicely built, has a feeling of quality (it better be for the price!)

Overall, very satisfied.

Arrived with something rattling around in it - but works fine. Software is ok and picture wall is also interesting. iphone app is not that useful, can only search though all files that have been uploaded - folders are not shown. UPDATE 1 month later.AVOID THIS!! Software crashes and files on the drive have also been found corrupted. Tried to work with Hitachi online help and support is depressing at best. They have no interest in helping issues to be fixed.I would not reccomend buying this at all.
-->UPDATE several months later: Hitachi offered to fix my drive, but in the end it looks like it could be something with my PC specifically, although I will never really know.The drive itself has been working fine. Only anoying part is it launches the install app to install the LifeStudio software everytime you plug it in. In the end the support I got from Hitachi was eventually ok - but we never did get the software to work on my laptop. I just use RSYNC (rsync.net) software now and it works great with the drive and has an online option. You need to get the older version to do drive to drive backups, but it works great, is simple but still tells you exactly what files are beings affected.

Audioengine 2 - PC multimedia speakers - 30 Watt (total) - 2-way - satin black Review

I got the A2 for use as a portable studio monitor when recording music with my laptop. As such, I think its form factor is unmatched: I don't know of any other 4"W x 6"H powered full-range (2.0) speaker of this quality.

I appreciate the stated frequency response figure, which is offered with plus/minus 2dB tolerance -- unlike other iPod or computer speakers. The cabinet is made from MDF (medium density fiberboard), a material used in many of the most well-regarded audiophile speakers. The Kevlar woofer and quality binding posts also inspire confidence. A protective grille and front-mounted volume control might have been handy, but that's a matter of preference. I got the white (A2W) model which is understated and attractive.

I'm comparing the A2 with the larger (5.5"W x 8.5"H) M-Audio Studiophile DX4 speaker, which is intended for home music studios. The DX4 is actually a little less expensive, but too bulky for portable use. The DX4 comes with individual frequency response measurements which in my case indicated close pair-matching and equally flat response to that of the A2. Anyone who has built speakers knows, however, that on-axis frequency response measurements don't tell the whole story. I did not compare the A2 with larger or more expensive speakers, and my emphasis is on use as a monitor for mixing music.

Dynamics. The A2's little 3" woofer is surprisingly dynamic: turn up the volume control and you can feel the air pumping in front of the cone and the slot. The speaker sounds balanced at both low and high volumes. A speaker this size is of course only for near-field individual listening. It is not for watching movies from across the room. The DX4's 4.5" woofer has more than twice the surface area and is capable of higher sound pressure levels.

Imaging. Probably a consequence of the well-damped MDF enclosure, the A2 images nicely. Instruments do not seem to come from the speakers but from the space between them. The DX4 had better depth and openness however. I think these characteristics are partially due to the DX4's low-frequency extension and high-frequency dispersion.

Frequency balance. The A2 delivers more bass than you would expect from a 3" woofer. Of course, there is nothing below 60Hz. The mid and upper bass are a little pronounced. (The effect is worse when resting directly on a desktop, so try raising them on stands.) This makes a grand piano sound more like an upright. The DX4 manages to go deeper and sound less boxy. The A2's midrange is smooth and natural sounding. The A2's treble character is quite different from the DX4's. The DX4 is a little hyped without being harsh: grunge guitar has more of an edge and cymbals have a more pronounced decay, yet high-hats sound similar to the A2.

Mixing/Mastering. The DX4 has better bass extension and treble clarity and lets you hear individual instruments more easily, so is well-suited to mixing. On the other hand, the DX4's perceived treble "zing" may in some cases lead a recording engineer to produce dull-sounding mixes. The A2 is probably more representative of small consumer playbacks systems (bookshelf speakers and car speakers), yet is less colored and more dynamic than similar-sized powered speakers. Therefore it offers a useful comparison for balancing mixes and for assessing the final mix. Its small size and smooth midrange make it suitable for portable monitoring.

Incidentally, the A2 has both RCA and 1/8" stereo inputs which are combined if both are in use, whereas the DX4 does not do this as advertised. I was also pleased with their customer service, which was responsive to emails and phone calls.

Western Digital 2TB SATA Green Power eco-friendly Hard Drive WD20000CSRTL Review

Western Digital 2TB SATA Green Power eco-friendly Hard Drive WD20000CSRTL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(See below for an update!)

Original review: This product (WD20000CSRTL) is a regular WD20EADS drive in retail packaging.I was worried it'd be a different drive, but it's not.

Unlike the "OEM" version (WD20EADS) it comes in a big-ish box and with an "install guide" (good if you haven't tried installing a new drive, I guess), an SATA cable and 4 mounting screws.The packaging is obviously more wasteful, but considering the bad packaging reviews the OEM drives get here, maybe its a good thing. If it's the same price as the WD20EADS then I think it's a good deal, even if just for the better packaging.

*Update July 2010* As others have pointed out; they are now selling WD20EARS drives under this ASIN.I use OS X, Linux and FreeBSD so it makes no difference to me; but if you use certain really old versions of Windows (Windows XP) you won't be able to use the full capacity (easily?) or something like that. The recent drives we ordered like this came individually packaged in WD packaging, but with no cables or anything.

*Update September 2010* Depending on the weather, phase of the moon etc you could now get any 2TB Western Digital "green" drive when you order this item.There are other Amazon product IDs that'll give you the same but for lower cost, too - so no longer recommended!!

Canon i860 Photo Printer Review

Canon i860 Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for a printer that can print photo-store quality prints quickly, quietly...AND print high-quality text...then look no further...The low cost, separate (and relatively inexpensive) ink tanks, and separate black ink for text are just an added bonus!
I spent months looking and shopping around, and finally settled on the i860 after going to a store and testing the printers side-by-side.True, at the highest photo quality, a lot of these printers will look alike...but after "looking under the hood," I decided the Canon was the way to go...Here is the skinny:
"Top Ten Reasons To Buy This Printer"
(1) Great photo quality prints in a jiffy (some say like 43 seconds, but it seems faster);
(2) Quiet (it almost whispers);
(3) Good print quality on regular text/regular paper;
(4) Easy to set-up, and the documentation is excellent (took me less than 10 minutes);
(5) Fantastic software package that comes with the unit...try the "Easy Web Print" and I guarantee that you won't be disappointed;
(6) Ink tanks are separate (meaning you don't have to replace a whole 3, 4 or 5 color tank when one color runs out) and relatively inexpensive;
(7) The paper that works best with the printer is made by Canon, which is also relatively inexpensive;
(8) Their customer support is phenominal (I had one small issue that turned out to have nothing to do with the printer itself), and their support staff not only knew what they were doing, but I didn't have to hold for an hour;
(9) It's very moderately priced; and
(10) True borderless printing (no perforated paper).
"Top Six Reasons Not To Buy This Printer" (can't think of 10!)
(1) Maximum print size is 8 1/2 x 11.If you like to print posters, find another printer;
(2) No LCD screen, so the printer needs to be controlled from the computer (or Camera if you have PhotoBridge on your camera) and you cannot review pictures on the printer before you print;
(3) No USB or Parallel cable in the box (why not, I ask?);
(4) Photo quality prints do not look great on other papers besides Canon;
(5) It's really big;
(6) The 4x6 paper try is a tad bit awkward;
I hope this helps!

THE QUICK TAKE:The WD10EARS is a new (shipping 12-2009) version of Western Digital's popular and successful WDxxEADS Caviar Green series of drives.It's a very good drive, but may need more thought than usual about whether it's the right drive for you.

The Caviar Green drives offer low power consumption, low noise and moderate operating temperatures, while still maintaining performace good enough for many applications, such as networked storage.This new WDxxEARS series uses more dense 500GB platters - so a 1TB drive has just two platters, and several drives up to 2TB are available.The new models have 64MB of cache.

ADVANCED FORMAT:There's another change as well.WD is using this series to transition to 4KB sectors on the hard drive; they call it WD Advanced Format technology.The long-term goal is to improve the efficiency of large hard drives, but as a transitional move they still trying to accomodate the 512B sectors that Windows XP uses.So the drive emulates that, using 512B logical sectors.However, they still claim that Advanced Format provides an improvement in burst speeds.

ISSUES WITH XP:While that sounds like all good news, it turns out that many XP users need to use the WD Align software to setup the drive, which can be time consuming and create some potential issues in formatting and partitioning the drive, and in finding tools to do that.

The exception is if you are using a single partition for a clean install - then there is an option to set a jumper on the drive before installing.WD has a table which summarizes installation at their "Advanced Format Hard Drive Download Utility" web page - anyone buying this drive should be sure to review that page.

So less technical users may want to believe WD when they say "WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7." This drive might not a good choice for some XP users - you'll be fine with the tried and true EADS series.

VISTA AND WINDOWS 7:Further, cloning and partitioning tools might present issues with Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well.You can read more about the AF transition at the WD web page mentioned above in the AnandTech article, "Western Digital's Advanced Format: The 4K Sector Transition Begins."They note that as of 12-2009 there might not be any commercially available cloning and imaging tools that would work with these drives.

LINUX AND MAC:The Anandtech article also states that current versions of Linux and Mac OS X are not affected by issues with Advanced Format, but discussions online suggest that Linux users seem to face some complexities on how to best partition and format to avoid mis-alignment.

OTHER INFO:The WD site has a good whitepaper on Advanced Format. Tom's Hardware has a good discussion about the earlier EADS series in an article entitled "Caviar Green, WD10EADS, And 1 TB," with power and performance info; and some interesting points if you Google "Pros And Cons Of Going Green."

LaCie Hard Disk 2 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301871U Review

LaCie Hard Disk 2 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301871U
Average Reviews:

I attached this 1-TB USB external drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac.The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition.I used the Mac's disk utilities, and created two partitions.This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then begins deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server.

The rest of the setup was fast. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine.The Time Machine software asked me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was decided on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since.How simple is that?

Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb.Even with the USB connection (I think firewire, which is available on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% faster), I found the file transfer time more than acceptable.I have run video from the drive with no issues.Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and graphic images to and from the drive, and again no issues.

All that being said, for the money, the drive is hard to beat.

This product was purchased for exclusive use as an external HDD for Dish Network's ViP 722.The "Home Edition" of the WD My Book has 3 ports: USB 2.0, Firewire, and SATA.This makes this HDD extremely flixable should it be decided to use the HDD for PC or even Tivo.

This HDD works flawlessy with the Dish ViP 722. It was connected to the 722 right out of the box and quickly formatted for immediate use.Transfers and playbacks to and from this HDD have been flawless.It is quiet and very good-looking.This HDD actually blends in very well, and is small enough to place additional My Book's for very neat and aesthetic appearance on shelves or TV Stands. It is the best looking and compact of all my external HDD's. I leave mine on at all times, so the blue indicator light is always illuminated.It makes a great night light.

One thing: the blue lights feature that indicates how much capacity of remains on the HDD works when using it connected to a PC.That feature will not work connected to the ViP 722.But I don't mind that, as it is very easy to check remaining capacity using the 722 menus.

I highly recommend this external HDD for use by Dish Network customers for their ViP series of satellite boxes, and I plan to buy this item again should I need more room.the 750GB is the current "official" maximum that Dish Network supports.HOWEVER, in the very near future Dish will officially support HDD's greater than 750GB.

Canon MultiPass MP360 Multifunction Review

Canon MultiPass MP360 Multifunction
Average Reviews:

After paying $30.00 for HP cartridges for years, I selected the Canon specifically because the ink cartridges were $7.00 or less and the color $15.00 or less.While I didn't expect the ink to last as long as the HP tanks, I was pleasantly surprised to get well over 100 sheets of greyscale printing by using the draft and standard modes and reserving quality mode only for presentations. In ink savings alone this printer will pay for itself compared with other brands, many many many times over.
The only real problem (and its not really a problem) with the printer is a long warmup period followed by some overdramatic printer head gymnastics when you go to print a document or use the copier. It can take well over 30 seconds between your print request and when the first page actually starts printing, although the printer is speedy enough after it starts.For casual home or office use this really isn't a problem.
The printer is obsessive about cleaning itself because the ink cartridges don't come with a printer head.This reduces the cost of the ink cartridges considerably but the printer has to take extra care in keeping the permanent head clean.So the long warmups are actually saving you money.
Another thing to note is that the scanner is only 8 1/2 by 11 so if you need to scan legal documents this isn't the model for you.If you want to make an occssional copy or scan a photo the scanner is perfect.
Regardless of where you are printing from (photoshop, word processor, or using the copier) print quality is excellent and the supplied drivers makes it easy to configure the printout.All three functions (scanning, printing, and copying) work flawlessly as as you expected.
The supplied software is worth the price of the printer alone offering an adaquate photo retoucher ( this software won't work with .gif images though ), Optical Character Recognition, and little applets to make handling scanned images (storing, attaching to email) easy.
Setup was a mild chore made easier by following the large poster in the box, there was nothing too difficult, mostly removing packaging and installing the printer ink for the first time. The poster was quite insistant that the USB cable (which is not included and must be purchased seperately) not be attached until last.
The unit itself is about a foot tall, a legal page wide, and a page and a half deep. So it's taller than you might expect.The unit is shiney black plastic, although the top is a more attractive textured black.The sides are light gray. They match the 2004 model Dell computers fairly well. Another nice feature is the output hopper can be folded up when not in use to save space and it just looks nicer.When you print, the hopper will automatically open.
There is no USB cable included with the printer so you'll need to get one.The Belkin cable Amazon recommends with this printer is a great value and works with either USB 1.0 or 2.0 (the printer can understand both). The printer does come with a color and black ink cartridge. The ink cartridge is the popular and widely used BCI-24 series, I had no problem finding replacements on Amazon, Wal Mart, and my local office supply stores.
All told this is a perfect home/small office unit that will fit just about any budget.After a month's use, I'm very satisfied with the quality and value of this printer.

The tech support was prompt and knowledgeable.The unit has good range which seems to be limitied more by the class of the PDA that is trying to acess it.

HOWEVER this product has a VERY serious design deficiency that makes it UNSUITABLE FOR USE at any price!!!!Belkin tech support has confirmed that there is no way to reset the unit to the original factory settings if you can not acess it via the built in web manager.Belkin tech support also confirmed that there is also a flaw in the unit that will cause some user passwords to not be accepted.Once this happens, this will essentially require returning the unit for complete replacement. I know of no other networking product that has such a serious design flaw (all other networking devices I am aware of have at least a reset button somewhere or a "power on" sequence to handle these inevitable situations).It also makes the unit unusable for any scenario where if you make a change to the settings, you can not afford to be without it for the time to swap it out.

An obvious problem for you, me and Amazon here!

Canon i900D Photo Printer Review

Canon i900D Photo Printer
Average Reviews:

I just upgraded from an HP 970 Cxi and couldn't be happier. My i900D makes top quality prints on Canon Glossy Photo Pro and Ilford Classic Glossy papers - better than the digital film processors I used. And, its ink is much cheaper than the HP's. And, it has a built in card reader that can be used by the PC and to print picures. And, it includes an LCD for printer status and picture preview (so so quality for picures). And it integrates very well with the great bundled software. And it includes a dedicated 4x6 feeder. And there was a...rebate when I bought it with my Canon S400.
The fact that it is slower than the i960 is actually a benefit. The i960's high speed causes some ink pooling on glossy papers like Ilford Classic Glossy - the i900D actually winds up with betters pics because its slower speed prevents pooling (based on what I have seen.)
Overall I've found excellent quality and all the features I could have wanted in a printer at a great price.

Product Description:
Note: The Canon i900D is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing the newer Canon Pixma iP8500 instead.
Producing high-speed, pro-quality, true borderless photos up to 8.5 by 11 inches, the Canon i900D connects either to your PC or directly to any Bubble Jet Direct or PictBridge digital camera. It combines outstanding quality with efficient management of consumables for an impressive alternative to professional photo labs. Its six individual ink tanks allow you to only replace the specific colors that are empty--especially important when printing, say, a stack of vacation photos that are all blue sky and ocean. Individual ink tanks save money, reduce waste. Able to print photo sizes ranging from 4 by 6 to 8.5 by 11 inches, the included 4-by-6-inch paper tray allows you to have two papers loaded simultaneously for absolute ease of use. Your 4-by-6-inch photos will print in approximately 75 seconds, and 8-by-10s print in about 3 minutes (fast mode).

This printer can connect directly to select digital cameras. Learn more about PictBridge. Canon's microscopic two-picoliter ink droplets and smooth 4,800 x 1,200 dpi give your images a clean, clearly detailed look. Best of all, it's up to you whether you print via your computer system or directly from your Bubble Jet Direct or PictBridge compatible camera or camcorder. Canon includes a one-year warranty with Instant Exchange service.

Western Digital My Book Live 1 TB Home Network Attached Storage Drive Gigabit Ethernet WDBACG0010HCH-NESN Review

Western Digital My Book Live 1 TB Home Network Attached Storage Drive Gigabit Ethernet WDBACG0010HCH-NESN

Yesterday I purchased one of these drives to use as a Network Attached Storage drive for my Sonos music system. This drive is perfect for that setup and exceeded my expectations. The setup for this drive is a snap. My PC and Sonos system recognized it with zero issues. The drive throughput is about 70Mb/s which is plenty for my purposes. Also (and a key feature for Sonos), this drive will spin down after inactivity and will even let you set how long it waits before spinning down (have not seen any other drive in this price range which will do that). Also, this drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system so no reformatting is needed like with most external drives. Having a drive with NAS capabilities is excellent because you need less hardware to make the drive available to Sonos. Lastly, because the drive doesn't have an on/off switch, you won't have to worry if you lose power that you'll have to turn this back on (like with the old Linksys NSLU2).

The only reason I don't give this five stars is because the "access over the web" part of the feature set is misleading. What you might expect is that this drive is available over the web through some sort of login and without the need of a PC to facilitate. Unfortunately you need all of those things to make this drive accessible over the web. The software WD provides to enable this, "MioNet", seems dated and rickety- not to mention NOT free. If leaving your PC on is acceptable for you, might I recommend downloading the Opera web browser and using their "Unite" service which will provide many of the same services as MioNet- but for *free*.

Overall a strong purchase and a nice product. If you have a Sonos system and want your music available, then this is the drive you need.
