Samsung SyncMaster 206BW 20-inch LCD Monitor Review

Samsung SyncMaster 206BW 20-inch LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall I found this to be a very good monitor at a fantastic price.I am a picky buyer, and am contemplating buying another one!I use it for business, movies, and occasional photo editing. That said, I found the buying process to be horribly confusing and spent days trying to figure out exactly what the differences are between any two LCDs.Here are some thoughts to aid your search:

1) the 206BW is Samsung's most recent 20" wide screen monitor.the 205BW and 204BW are its predecessors, are inferior, and are still sold in stores. the 206BW appears to be a big improvement over the 205BW.2206bw is the corresponding 22" monitor.
2) the 20" monitor appears to be the sweet spot of the line.the 19" has lower pixel count, the 22" has the same pixel count as 20".The .258 pixel pitch of this monitor is also among the best I have seen for a consumer grade monitor.the 19" and 22" both have worse pixel pitch
3) this monitor gives a very large work space.I can comfortably have two documents, spreadsheets, etc. side by side.At 1600+ / 1000+ it has 10-15% more pixels, and a ton more space than my laptop.I was initially considering a non-wide-screen monitor.I am pleased that I chose this instead.
4) movies look fantastic.dark scenes particularly look better than they did on both my old CRT display and on my laptop LCD
5) monitors appear to have similar specs across manufacturers for their generation.this monitor appears to have been just released (3/1/2007), and has industry leading specs- 2ms response rate, 3000:1 dynamic contrasts, etc.Samsung's competitors (Viewsonic, etc) did not have comparable products when I bought. If you are tempted to by a product with lesser specs that may be marketed as "better," find out if this is actually the case, or if it is just an old design.LCD lines seem to turn over every 6-12 months.
6) stay away from monitors with speakers.reviews consistently pan them as gimicky and non-functional, and they add size and cost
7) one drawback is that the monitor stand is not adjustable. If you care, buy a good stand.there are standard interconnects on the back.it should work with this or any future monitor you buy.for my money, I would rather have a product with better performance than a more functional stand.

I have no comments on life as I have had the product for under a week.

happy shopping!

Product Description:
The Samsung 206BW 20-Inch Digital/Analog Widescreen LCD Monitor offers razor-sharp, widescreen image clarity and a host of innovative features. The image quality of the 20-inch widescreen offers wide viewing angles with bright colors for a very favorable viewing experience. With a wider viewing angle (160-degree vertical and horizontal viewing angle) Samsung makes sure you can see objects on your screen even when you're leaning over to grab a snack.
With 16.7 million colors bombarding your rods and cones, you'll be impressed with the clearer, brighter imagery that this wide spectrum monitor has to offer. Another impressive feature of the 206BW is the pixel pitch, or the distance between pixels. This specification is usually measured in millimeters, and the smaller the pitch the sharper the image. Samsung offers a remarkable 0.258-millimeter pixel pitch for outstanding image clarity. The most talked about spec associated with LCD monitors is the measure of the difference of brightness levels between the brightest white and the darkest dark--the contrast ratio. With a contrast ration of 3000:1, this monitor assures crisp, easy-to-view images. Lastly, Samsung has designed this monitor with MagicColor to improve hue and saturation of colors. This function also adjusts mid-level colors to shades that the human eye accepts as natural. By enhancing the contrast ratio with MagicColor, fresh images with exceptional clarity spring to life, even on a darker screen.
Connectivity is also important when choosing a monitor. The 206BW features an advanced dual interface that is capable of handling both analog video signals for present use, and digital video signals for the future. Whatever the signal sources are, this monitor will process those signals to give you an optimal viewing experience. In addition, this monitor features a standard D-Sub 15-pin connection and a fast DVI-D connection for your high-resolution demands.
Other features include compatibility with all major operating systems (including Microsoft Vista's Premium standards) and an ultra-fast 2ms response time that virtually eliminates the "blur" that is present in 25, 16, and 12ms monitors (this is especially good news for gamers). Plus, with Samsung you have Magic Technologies, such asMagicBright3 and MagicTune, right at your fingertips. MagicBright3 is a new feature that provides the best viewing environment depending on the contents of the image you are watching, and MagicTune is Samsung's OSD (On-Screen Display) solution that provides a simple, convenient adjustment to the best image quality. The 206BW is designed to meet VESA standards to accommodate any display type. This monitor is both wall and arm mountable, so it fits almost any environment on your desk or the wall.

Acer AL2223Wd 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

Acer AL2223Wd 22' Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall I am very pleased with this monitor and would definitely recommend it to anyone on a budget. You'd be hard pressed to beat it for the price. However, it is not perfect...

PROS
- Screen is very bright (I had to turn it down), and very clear at native resolution
- Mine has no dead pixels
- "Ghosting" effect while paying fast-paced games is very minimal
- Comes with a DVI cable (many don't)
- GridVista software included is a handy tool that allows you to arrange open windows in a grid on your screen so you don't have to constantly switch between them.

CONS
- I can notice a *slight* change in brightness from the top of the screen to the bottom, even when looking straight at the screen. When I tilt the screen up or down, this difference becomes more apparent. But it isn't so bad as to be distracting as long as you have the monitor facing you perfectly.
- The screen is only 6-bit, which is below the ideal 8-bit. What this means is the monitor can only display a limited number of colors. Most users may not notice the minor dithering this causes, but to those who are into professional photo or video editing, you should probably cough up more cash for a monitor with an 8-bit screen.
- The stand is difficult to adjust and doesn't allow for much customization.
- The connectors are located in an inconvenient spot behind the stand.

For me, the pros far outweigh the cons. If you aren't looking to spend a boatload but want a large, impressive widescreen then this is the monitor you want!

DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand Review

DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What's the best thing about going into an Apple store? The hordes of black-shirted dudes with gleaming iPods round their necks? The Genius Bar answering any and every question that might come up in the Apple universe? Well, in my book it's the rows of Macs with those killer large TFT screens. Even if a lowly Mac Mini is out on display, it will be connected to a gleaming Apple Cinema Display, and even the iMac G5s seem to favour the 20" models. As for the Power Macs, a pair of 24" or 30" screens seems to be the only way to truly show off Final Cut Pro or Logic.

Cinema Displays are killer cool, with their gleaming aluminium cases and fabulous industrial design. They are priced as a premium product, and they look like they are worth every penny but that doesn't make it any easier to afford one. I'd always thought that I would never be able to aspire to such a fine window to OS X. However, I have recently discovered that this is not the case. This technology is now available to us mere mortals, for little more than half the price that Apple charges.

Come Over to the Dark Side
You see, there is only one supplier of 20" 1680x1050 resolution panels that manufactures in volume - LG.Philips. Accordingly, Dell's 20" 2005FPW panel uses exactly the same LCD panel as Apple's 20" Cinema Display. Dell prices for monitors start out somewhat less expensive than Apple, but are frequently discounted by massive percentages, something Apple is not known for.

I needed to replace the 17" Acer panel I was using on my Power Mac G5. It showed poor colour registration and some fuzziness, principally because it only had a captive analogue connector, and no DVI input. It was playing havoc with my digital photography work, and was quite uncomfortable to use for long periods. I decided to get a DVI display, and when I got wind that Dell had a sale on their widescreen displays, I got my credit card revved. Three days later, a courier delivered my new screen.

Now, with Dell you get good value, a three-year warranty and industrial design that is firmly placed in the mid-nineties. The 2005FPW is dressed in a plastic shell in standard Dell dark grey, with the occasional silver highlight. However, build quality is very good, and the monitor ships with a robust grey and silver stand with cable management and height adjustment. The stand also allows the display to be rotated through ninety degrees to display a portrait image, though I have not tried this myself as I do not have enough vertical room on my desk. I believe this functionality will work without additional software on any Mac that is running OS X 10.4 Tiger and has an ATI graphics card.

As well as this feature, the monitor is stuffed with other goodies as well. There are four inputs (DVI, VGA, RGB and Composite) as well as a plethora of display modes, including a very funky picture-in-picture mode, which allows TV monitoring or multiple PCs to be used in you have them cabled correctly. The monitor has four USB ports, and acts as a USB hub - two are on the back and two are on the side. Dell also throws in power, DVI and VGA cables in the box but as you might expect on a higher-end product, none of the cables are captive to the monitor.

The only thing that is missing are speakers. I personally see this as no great loss, as monitor speakers are rarely of good quality. Dell will send a media bar with speakers as an add on to the monitor if required,

Yada, Yada, Yada - What Does It Look Like?
In a word & superb! Connected via DVI, a bright and clear image of my Tiger desktop is displayed, and running through the calibration screens shows that no changes are necessary. Backlighting is strong and even across the display, and contrast looks fine. DVD and video playback shows little smearing to my jaded eyes, though I have to admit I am not a big movie watcher while I sit in front of my computer. Of course, DVDs play back in the 16:9 aspect ratio they were designed for, and the excellent contrast ratio means that blacks look black and a 'washed-out' image is not seen.

I do play the occasional game, though, so I fired up Halo to see how the Dell performed. After adjusting the monitor to display the image in the centre of the screen rather than stretching it to fill the display, I was pleased to see that here too the image was bright and showed little ghosting.

What I was really pleased with was the way this display affects my workflow. In Photoshop, you can push the took palettes to the edge of the screen while working on a large representation of your image, browsing images is a much nicer experience as well, and iPhoto really works best on a widescreen display. The Finder takes on a new ease of use as it is easier to drag and drop between two windows that you can actually see, and applications like Mail, iTunes or NetNewsWire really benefit from the extra real estate.

The Bottom Line
Of course, it makes sense that the extra screen real estate that a 1680x1050 display gives you will improve your computing experience, and it s a no-brainer if the price is right. Here in the UK, you can pick up a decent, brand name 17" 1280x1024 4:3 ratio panel for around £170, or US$300. A 19" 4:3 panel will give you the same resolution for around £240, or US$425. This panel lists with Dell at £507 (US$900), which is £40 less than the price for a 20" Apple Cinema Display. However, I got it from Dell at £325 (US$575), substantially less than the Apple product. I am lead to believe from some of the posts I see online that in the US, rebates can bring the price below the $400 mark!

I can remember just a few years ago that 17" CRTs or 15" TFT flat panels were priced at just over £300. The fact that for a little more you can today get such a fantastic display amazes me. As you spend all of your computing time looking at your monitor, and such a device should last longer than your current Macintosh, I feel that these displays represent excellent value for money.

MyMac Rating:
At this sort of price, I have no hesitation at all at giving the Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20" Widescreen Display a mark of five out five.

HP 2009M 20-Inch HD LCD Monitor Review

This monitor has a great picture and works flawlessly with my MacBook. The 16:9 aspect is perfect for watching DVDs and hulu.com. The design is slick and modern, and the glossy screen is vibrant. For under $150.00 how can you go wrong?

The built in speakers are a little quiet, but better than my notebook's built in speakers.

When connecting with a Mac, I recommend turning the monitor's auto sleep function off, as it would sleep before I could get my Mac to output video.

This is my secondary monitor for my laptop and works great.I was looking for something that is around 19" and gives better resolution than 1400 X 1050 on my laptop.
My main use of the unit is for VMs and text though I use it sometimes for graphics.

Gives 1680X 1050 max resolution at 60HZ refresh and well worth the money that you spend on it.It is not the glossy / ultra bright vivid color screen type, though you can use it at high brightness using the pre-sets or custom calibration.

HP W1858 18.5-Inch Widescreen Monitor Review

HP W1858 18.5 inch Widescreen Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm on my third HP laptop/PC system. Generally my purchases have been problem-free, which is why I continued to go back to HP. However, this monitor -- which I am using with the Pavilion 6240 -- has been a problem.

One issue is the integrated speakers, which are weak and lack sound volume & quality, imo.

The second issue is more troubling. The screen picture always needs adjustment, especially after reboots and system changes/tweaks. The picture reverts to a horizontal picture that is slightly off-screen (horizontal right) and an off-kilter clocked image. The image issues are noticeable and require a manual fix, which are some combination of factory resets and auto-adjustment of 1, 2 or 3 clicks. What the exact combination is ... who knows? The combination that works changes from day to day. This is such an irritant.

The image control problem with this monitor is well-known. I just wish I knew about it before making the purchase. I can't wait to replace this monitor, and I will think twice before purchasing HP again.

Samsung B2230 22-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black Review

Samsung B2230 22 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third Samsung PC LCD, owning both a 22" 1680x1050 226BW for over three years and a 25.5" 1920x1200 T260 for a year (had a bad 22" and got it replaced - the 226BW reviewed here January 19, 2008). Anyway, I bought the B2230 for a 3-LCD gaming rig setup. If it could be done over, I'd have bought another monitor, specifically the P2250, which I'll buy for the 3rd LCD to complete the setup.

First, the pixel pitch on this monitor is about the same as the 22" and 25.5" (.28xxx mm - the P2250 has .24xxx pixel density - more pixel density = better display quality). I was hoping for a little sharper clarity for a 1920x1080 resolution monitor in this size, especially considering the 25.5" shares nearly the same pixel density over 4" more of screen real estate. The 25.5" is as clear as the 21.5" in website text and the holy grail of display quality for me: cockpit instrument readability in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. There is of course a sharpness option on the menu, but it just doesn't help much for what I was expecting.

With that said, it's still an okay monitor for the average user. It's a few pounds lighter than the 22" and runs very cool. The touch menu options and feel are pretty standard for Samsung. People new to Samsung's PC LCDs may find the front bezel touch "buttons" awkward and hard to work with, but it sure beats trying to deal with Samsung's buttons on the side and bottom of my other two monitors blindly. Similarly, the gloss bezel may be a put-off to some and definitely is a dust and fingerprint magnet. But I like the gloss - it appears to be the norm these days from manufacturers and matches everything else in the house TV/monitor wise. No red "touch of color" here to match the gorgeous T260, but it still looks good on the desk. The mount does allow for tilt, but as so typical in this price range, no height adjustment.

Finally, the brightness of this monitor needs to be toned way down out of the box, to less than 60%. You will be spending some time calibrating this to your liking. All in all for those who want a run-of-the-mill 21.5" LCD that's 1080p capable, this is an acceptable monitor, but as mentioned, not recommended for those who appreciate higher pixel density output. Think of this LCD as the Enterprise rental Buick of 1080p Samsung monitors: it serves the purpose and grandpa thinks it's awesome, but not something to brag about to friends.

HP 2159M 21.5 inch HD LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wouldn't call myself very tech savvy, but you don't have to be to know that you purchased a good lcd monitor.I really can't compare it to other hd monitors since this is the only one I own.I previously owned a 17 inch lcd, which I used for typical computer tasks and gaming.I'll give my pros and cons on the HP 2159m:

Pros:-Full HD, HDMI and DVI
-1920x1080 resolution, very high for a display under $300.
-Wide viewing angle is great for movies.
-Integrated speakers
-Great for gaming, I used my Xbox 360 on it.You get up 1080p.
-VGA is actually very good.I tried my PC(1920x1080 60Hz) and
it impressed me.

Cons:-Speakers don't have such great sound.
-The glossy screen is a bit reflective, but not a big problem.

Once you own this monitor, you will find many things you like about it and some things you don't.But what can I say?I didn't buy the monitor for the intergrated speakers, I use my own speakers. The glossy screen is a bit reflective in dark backgrounds, I hardly notice it at times. They're just minor things. If your thinking of upgrading, do it.It's worth the $200+ you'll pay.
