HP LaserJet 1320n Monochrome Network Printer Review

HP LaserJet 1320n Monochrome Network Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As always, here's my honest review with some background.

I've been looking for a good laser printer that I could have on my network for a while now.I have a small office and am an aspiring teacher (currently student teaching). When I can't get to the copy machine at school, I wanted something I could use to do some "mass printouts" for my students.I had an old NEC Superscript, but it frequently paused between pages for a breather and was generally slow.

If you don't need the network card (print server) built into this printer, then the 1320 (not 1320n) would be an amazing value! For me, I wanted the networking, so I was willing to spend the extra money.Setup was relatively simple, changing the IP address was easy, and I was up and running, printing from my Windows XP machines AND my MacOS X (10.3.7) machines.

Now for the printer itself.I'm very impressed with the build quality.Printers have been turning into plastic junk lately, but this one still has metal guts, metal supports holding the paper in the bottom tray, etc.Certain parts seem like generic plastic, but overall it has a nice fit and finish.

Print speeds are amazingly swift! The first thing I put this little print-monster through was a 70-copy worksheet for my students. It took sheet after sheet without a pause! It might grab paper just when the previous sheet is half way through because they seem to keep flying out!Duplex printing was a bonus with this unit - handy in a pinch, but it slows the print speed by about 2-3 times - because it pulls the paper back inside and reprints on the other side...Either way, I dare you to find a quality printer like this, with a duplexer for this price!

Instant on fuser sends paper printing within 8 seconds.Overall, I'm very pleased!I was tempted to get the next model up (2420) but the price difference with no standard duplexer killed that deal.

Wish list?An tiny LCD display telling me whats going on would be nice - but it has lights which do the job just fine. Also - and I'm just dreaming here, it would be nice to see an option for this printer to staple printouts...I know, I've been around pricey copy machines too much!

So, pick yourself up this printer! You won't be sorry. The print quality is very crisp - your well-known HP laser quality, and even graphics are suitable! Its B&W (no color printing), but the money saved on just one toner from time to time as apposed to inkjet cartridges every other month is mind boggling!...and how often do you need color printing? Some may, but for the bulk of what I print, B&W is fine.

High recommended! ...feel free to contact me if you have any questions that I might be able to help you with.

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex Review

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330.While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.

BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.

1)The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools.Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine.A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers.Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak!**UPDATE**Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix.Pathetic if you ask me.I think most users will agree!!!

2)The scanner ADF head will sometimes make odd sounds when its scanning the last page of a multi-page scan.It sounds as if the motor or gears need lubrication.

3)I've had the COPY function lockup on me a couple times (other fucntions continue to work) and the only way to correct is to power cycle.Cause is unknown but the clowns at Brother support tell me to keep power cycling the resolve the problem.IDIOTS!

4)The IFAX feature is not very well explained and is somewhat odd in the way it works (or tries to work).I've yet to really figure it out.As an alternative I use the FAX FORWARD TO EMAIL function which works well.

5)A PC software bug:When scanning multiple pages its impossible to multitask since the scanner interface takes the focus away from whatever you are doing everytime it begins scanning a new page.Brother apparently knows about this issue and will correct in the next software version.

Other than the above isues, I'm fairly satisfied in the short time I've been using this MFC.If I may comment in response to one of the previous reviews, the beep sound is adjustable and I believe if the user took the time to read the manual, he'd be quite happy with the level of customization available on this machine (I rarely hear of people complaining about too many features).Oh, and yes as stoneaged as it sounds, some people still do occasionally receive faxes.

As far as I'm concerned, the print speed is excellent.Even complex pages print quickly with nearly no delay between pages.A huge improvment over my old HP.Also, I find the scan speed on non complex scans to be excellent.Complex and high res scans are somewhat slower, but they are with many scanners (and certainly about every multifucntion I've run across).Print duplexing is another very nice touch and I'm surprised it works as well as it does. The 8860DN gets the job done and it does them well overall.

Things about the 8860DN I prefer over the new HP 3390 I compared it to.

1) 8860 has a legal size scan plate
2) 8860 will fax forward to email
3) 8860 is $150 less with approx. the same cost per page in consumables.
4)8860 does duplex scan, copy

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA) Review

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake.I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus. This new machine is definitely a major improvement.

First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system.I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it.

It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet. It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length - it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back). It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black - CMYK) so this can be costly. The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color. It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long. And when the toner is low, you get a warning. You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages).

The Bad: I'll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder.I may be doing something wrong, but I've found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time.Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I'm done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side. You can't really do that with this. And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best. You can't simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it.You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print. It did print generic Avery labels okay though.

All in all, it is great.Oh, and there's one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn't know these terms before). For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the 'Finishing' tab and selected 'Print on Both Sides' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything.I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect.

If you don't need to have this printer on a network, and you don't need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser.Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars.I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it's superb.Get yours now - the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go.You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don't have one. Enjoy and thank you for reading.

HP Color LaserJet 4500N Printer Review

HP Color LaserJet 4500N Printer

I have used my 4500 for about 6 months now and could not be more in love with it. I have owned about 6-7 color inkjets before this and finally made the big move to color laser. You can print perfect photos on just about any kind of paper.I would like to see some "true" glossy paper on the market for photos, however. Most specialty papers for inkjet printers (mostly glossy) will not work with the laserjet because of the heat. Keep in mind you can not do heat transfers with a laserjet printer. There are four cartridges that make up the 4500's color. They are VERY expensive, but I am still using the same one that came with the printer and have printed well over a thousand photos. Long term is much cheaper to run than an inkjet.

Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S80 Document Imaging Scanner Review

Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S80 Document Imaging Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the GT-S80 to replace my 1st generation Mac compatible Scansnap (fi-5110EOXM). I wanted a faster scanner (40 PPM vs 15) with better paper handling (less misfeeds according to at least one review comparing GT-S50 to Scansnap elsewhere.)
I used the GT-S80 for less than a day and returned it to Amazon. Here are the reasons why:
1. Speed. Even though the GT-S80 is rated at 40 ppm, when I load paper to scan and push the scan button, it would take about 15-20 seconds for the Epson utility that handles the scanning to activate and for the scan job to actually begin. Several sheets would feed quickly, then there would be a pause (several seconds) while the 5 or 6 sheets that had fed were being processed. Please note, I am using a 2009 Mac Pro 8 core 2.66 GHz Nehalem Xeon machine with 16GB of RAM. It's not a sluggish machine. The combination of the delay in starting and the pause each 5-6 pages significantly decreased any speed advantage the GT-S80 may theoretically possess.
2. Page misfeeds. My scans often consist of regular laser paper interspersed with thinner "NCR" pressure sensitive paper. The GT-S80 double fed these as often as my old Scansnap. Not only did it misfeed, even when I tried to turn on the ultrasonic double feed detection, the Epson would not detect double fed sheets.
3. LCD display on scanner doesn't show actual scan settings when used with Macintosh. When used with Windows PC's, the Epson GT-S80 will show the scan settings from the LCD display (resolution, simplex/duplex, etc), allowing the user to choose the job setting desired. On Mac, only JOB1, JOB2, JOB3...etc. are shown.
4. Confusing EpsonScan utilities. I also have an Epson V600 flatbed scanner (great scanner!) The Epson Scan utility that is compatible with the V600 is a different version than the one that is compatible with the GT-S80, although they look similar. Neither will recognize the other scanner. This is a bit counter intuitive. Of course, this isn't a problem if you don't use Epson Scan to do your scanning (using TWAIN or another scan utility.)
Anyway, I ended up returning the scanner to Amazon and bought a Scansnap S1500M, which I am much happier with than the GT-S80.

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays Review

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays
Average Reviews:

I've been using HP stuff since the first scientific calculator, the HP-32, that came out in 1973. It used to be rock solid, designed by engineers to be used by engineers. Sadly, it's now cheap junk. The scanners in HP's all-in-one's seemed designed to fail in the thirteenth month after purchase.

Some of HP's recent printers do not even implement their own Printer Control Language properly (HP PCL).

This Brother printer works. It implements PCL5 correctly, as well as its emulation of PostScript. I've networked computers for fifteen years, so setup went very easily. The hardest part was hauling the CD-ROM to the various computers on the network, since Windows did not have the driver built in. A no-brainer.

The supplies work out to 1.4 cents a page (toner and drum). Hard to beat that.

First off, good points:
Build quality feel solid. The device firmly fits into the docking base and scans fast. As a recent Mac convert, I was looking for a full feature scanner for the Mac. I primarily intended to use the scanner to rapidly scan receipts and invoices. I purchased this unit because it claimed to produce searchable PDFs.

Now for the bad news...

First off, no drivers for Mac!!! No TWAIN or ISIS support. Only a third party product ExactScan Lite is bundled. The software seems good enough, but only the pro version produces searchable PDF's (OCR function). The lite version can only produce PDF, not tiff, jpeg or any other image format. The other bundled software, Presto! PageManager can do OCR but only on image formats. So you are a bit out of luck.

The manufacturer's website says:
Text Searchable PDF
If you can't search your scanned documents by their content, you might as well be looking at paper again. The Strobe 500 can scan automatically to searchable PDF. It preserves the integrity of the scanned page so that layout, signatures, logos, photos, etc., remain intact, but the text is OCR'd so that you can search the document by its content. This is very powerful when looking for a single document among hundreds or thousands.

But the undisclosed caveat is that you must be running windows to get the searchable PDF. I called support and after several explanations, they conceded that the scanner really cannot produce a searchable PDF on a Mac. I did look into the Pro version of ExactScan but it's another 100 euros to purchase and has significant issues with the de-skew and auto crop features. Overall for $400 a real disappointment. I just cant imagine a scanner vendor this day and age shipping a scanner out the door without drivers.

I guess I will be returning this unit. I have ordered the Epson scanner which ships with TWAIN drivers. Hopefully it will work better with Mac.

So if you are running Windows, I would not necessarily dismiss this scanner. I was able to get it working in a Windows XP Fusion VM, but for $400 that is no solution for me.

Easy to set up and use and what a difference duplex scanning makes - the scanner eats up the pages.I was able to format a size for cancelled checks and scan them one at a time - the scanner automatically scans the back and places the scans in order ( probably with the help of the Adobe program, but it was easy) This scanner replaces a Fujitsu 620C sheetfed and flatbed scanner and quite honestly is so much faster and easier to use.It takes up no space on a desktop - especially compared to the old scanner.I would recommend it to anyone.

Product Description:
The ScanPartner FI-4120C color duplex workgroup scanner offers substantially faster speeds than its predecessors, possessing duplex and color capabilities of up to 25 pages per minute, boosting efficiency for your business's decentralized and low-volume scanning efforts. This model is equipped with a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) with double-feed detection for smooth paper flow. With its advanced ADF design, the paper path is almost linear--from thin slips to thick business cards and postcards, the transport moves pages steadily and without stress.
Photograph-friendly dual 600-dpi CCDs (charge-coupled devices) scan both sides of a document at once for maximum efficiency, and the scanner's selectable dual interface accepts either SCSI-2 or USB 1.1 connectivity. It also comes equipped with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 software to convert any document into an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file. Other in-box applications include ScandAll 21, a TWAIN utility, and QuickScan. Onboard JPEG hardware compression assists with large files. The unit is backed by a one-year warranty.

I researched and found that cartridges for this machine are a lot cheaper than those for HP's and the toner that comes with the printer has a page yield of 1500 color and 2500 b&w.The Hp'scame with toner that had only 750 page yield then you had to pay approx $140 for the toner cartridges for replacement when with this one you can purchase toner cartridges for right around $70 which is half the price with more page yield. So far I have printed 450 pages on the starter cartridges and the toner amount has not lowered and the print quality is excellent!

Fujitsu ScanSnap fi-5110EOX2 - Document scanner - Duplex - Legal - 600 dpi - ADF ( 50 sheets ) - Hi-Speed USB Review

I bought the Scansnap partly because of the glowing reviews here on Amazon, and I not disappointed.Rarely do I find a product worthy of 5 stars, but this little guy deserves it.As noted in some of the other reviews, the ScanSnap is sort of a one trick poney - it is designed to quickly scan and archive documents in PDF.Don't expect it do a good job with photos, and as noted, it won't do a grayscale image.

It's small size, ability to duplex, excellent document feeder, and fast operation make archiving large numbers of documents feasible. The driver software is simple to use, and you can create and save profiles for different scanning needs such as simplex, duplex, color, better quality etc.The profiles make it easy to switch settings on the fly.The vast majority of documents will be legible using the Normal (fastest) settiing, which helps keep file sizes small. For documents with very fine print, I found that the "Better" mode adds enough resolution to make even the smallest text legible.

The ScanSnap Organizer software that ships with the scanner is a simple Paperport-style document manager, in which you can create File Cabinets with Folders to organize your paperwork. What I like about it is that it the folder structure you create in the Organizer is mirrored on your harddrive with a ScanSnap directory and subdirectories named the same as the File Cabinets and Folders you create. You can therefore find your documents by just browsing your harddrive. Because the file format is PDF, you can't stack pages and documents together through the Organizer like you can in Paperport. You have do this in Acrobat and save the file.Organizer doesn't have a lot of advanced features, but I prefer the simplicity of it.

I went through a big pile of personal stuff in about an hour.It sure feels good to put that stack of paper into the shredder.Of course, the downside to archiving documents into digital format and getting rid of the originals (which I suppose is the point of the endeavor) is the possibility of data loss. You'd better adopt a reduntant backup strategy, because hard disc drives can and do fail.I sycnhonize to multiple computers and will write my files to DVD for protection. I suppose if you're really cautious, you could subscribe to one of the online backup services for secure off-site backup.

If you think the price is a little stiff, remember this scannor duplexes, which enormously simplifies the archiving process by eliminating the need to flip and rescan pages. Also, by duplexing, all pages are put into a single file in the proper order.I'd also point out again that the document feeder is truly remarkable in it's ability to feed just about any size and shape with out jamming. You can even do receipts that come on slick thermal paper.Occasionally ScanSnap will make a mistake in page orientation or will crop improperly.I found this happens with half-length documents, which you need to insert sideways to scan properly.

One of the reasons this package was appealing to me is because it comes with Acrobate Standard 7.0.A word of warning -Adobe has seen fit to remove all the form-making features from Acrobat Standard, though they left the ability to insert and remove pages, annotate and comment. If you want the all the great features of Acrobat to create forms, you have to buy the Pro version.

Fujitsu fi-6130 Duplex Scanner (PA03540-B055) Review

Having used scanners from Canon, Xerox, Lanier, Visioneer and Epson, I have a good base from which to compare this scanner. It is excellent! The feed mechanism on this scanner is superior to all prior scanners I have used, including other scanners in this price range. This unit has multiple rollers located in the base and cover that spin at different speeds to pull only one sheet at a time.In other scanners, folded paper - like documents received in an envelop - will double/multi feed.I have not had a single double feed with this unit.I am using it with File Center Pro software to convert more than 1,600 legal files to paperless .pdf format.I was so impressed with this unit that I now have 4 of them in the office, each going at least 8 hours per day with virtually no jams or double feeds. It's worth the money for an office setting where you don't have time for jams and double feeds.

If any graphic design artists need to print in CMYK and wide format, this is probably the best printer you can get in terms of cost and quality. The 88 ink is super cheap and it pumps out a LOT of pages. If you plan on doing a lot of printing but don't wanna pay as much as a laser jet printer, you should use a printer that uses the 88 ink.For 20.99 this cartridge can give you 1200 pages. What other cartridge on the market can do that for so cheap???What's even better is how 34 bucks you can get the XL and the XL can do 2400 pages.Again, what cartridge do you know of can give you 2400 pages for 34 bucks? It's a great printer at a great price when you can find it on sale.

C544DN Color Laser Printer Review

After a reload of the OS, my old HP laser was no longer compatible with my Mac computer, so I went looking for a color laser that did duplex printing (trying to be a bit green). My use is at home for personal as well as some business printing.

The set up was easy and the instructions clear.Printing in B&W single sided is fast and of high quality.I find the color printing to be a bit muted and not photo-like, but still acceptable. The biggest negative is the duplex printing. It works, but...When I select two-sided printing, it takes forever to print. It is so slow that I have given up using it completely. As I was hurrying out of the house on a road trip, I tried to print a Google map in duplex, and it took so long I simply left the house without the map.I don't know what is going on inside, but this is so bad I'm shocked it ever was released.

Once I ignore duplex printing, and treat it like a nice feature I will rarely if ever use, then I am generally satisfied with the printer and recommend it for the price.
