Canon MultiPass MP360 Multifunction Review

Canon MultiPass MP360 Multifunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After paying $30.00 for HP cartridges for years, I selected the Canon specifically because the ink cartridges were $7.00 or less and the color $15.00 or less. While I didn't expect the ink to last as long as the HP tanks, I was pleasantly surprised to get well over 100 sheets of greyscale printing by using the draft and standard modes and reserving quality mode only for presentations. In ink savings alone this printer will pay for itself compared with other brands, many many many times over.
The only real problem (and its not really a problem) with the printer is a long warmup period followed by some overdramatic printer head gymnastics when you go to print a document or use the copier. It can take well over 30 seconds between your print request and when the first page actually starts printing, although the printer is speedy enough after it starts. For casual home or office use this really isn't a problem.
The printer is obsessive about cleaning itself because the ink cartridges don't come with a printer head. This reduces the cost of the ink cartridges considerably but the printer has to take extra care in keeping the permanent head clean. So the long warmups are actually saving you money.
Another thing to note is that the scanner is only 8 1/2 by 11 so if you need to scan legal documents this isn't the model for you.If you want to make an occssional copy or scan a photo the scanner is perfect.
Regardless of where you are printing from (photoshop, word processor, or using the copier) print quality is excellent and the supplied drivers makes it easy to configure the printout. All three functions (scanning, printing, and copying) work flawlessly as as you expected.
The supplied software is worth the price of the printer alone offering an adaquate photo retoucher ( this software won't work with .gif images though ), Optical Character Recognition, and little applets to make handling scanned images (storing, attaching to email) easy.
Setup was a mild chore made easier by following the large poster in the box, there was nothing too difficult, mostly removing packaging and installing the printer ink for the first time. The poster was quite insistant that the USB cable (which is not included and must be purchased seperately) not be attached until last.
The unit itself is about a foot tall, a legal page wide, and a page and a half deep. So it's taller than you might expect. The unit is shiney black plastic, although the top is a more attractive textured black. The sides are light gray. They match the 2004 model Dell computers fairly well. Another nice feature is the output hopper can be folded up when not in use to save space and it just looks nicer. When you print, the hopper will automatically open.
There is no USB cable included with the printer so you'll need to get one.The Belkin cable Amazon recommends with this printer is a great value and works with either USB 1.0 or 2.0 (the printer can understand both). The printer does come with a color and black ink cartridge. The ink cartridge is the popular and widely used BCI-24 series, I had no problem finding replacements on Amazon, Wal Mart, and my local office supply stores.
All told this is a perfect home/small office unit that will fit just about any budget. After a month's use, I'm very satisfied with the quality and value of this printer.

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer Review

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I selected this copier/printer based on price, features and the Canon name.I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08.It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila!I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.

- Its quick
- Makes clear, clean copies
- Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud
- Top sheet feeder works well, even for multiple sheets
- Toner cartridge was a breeze to install
- Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly, even from another PC on the network
- Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE, not a starter. For those who do not know about this: many new printers, especially when being sold at LOW prices, are sold with a toner cartridge that's only good for a few hundred copies at most.Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge. This is often how the mfg's will move more units, by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner.

With the rebate I couldn't pass this up, although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC.This one DOES NOT.It is only a printer and copier.I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.

I would recommend this printer.

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex Review

Brother MFC-8860DN Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer with Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330.While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.

BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.

1)The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools.Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine.A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers.Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak!**UPDATE**Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix.Pathetic if you ask me.I think most users will agree!!!

2)The scanner ADF head will sometimes make odd sounds when its scanning the last page of a multi-page scan.It sounds as if the motor or gears need lubrication.

3)I've had the COPY function lockup on me a couple times (other fucntions continue to work) and the only way to correct is to power cycle.Cause is unknown but the clowns at Brother support tell me to keep power cycling the resolve the problem.IDIOTS!

4)The IFAX feature is not very well explained and is somewhat odd in the way it works (or tries to work).I've yet to really figure it out.As an alternative I use the FAX FORWARD TO EMAIL function which works well.

5)A PC software bug:When scanning multiple pages its impossible to multitask since the scanner interface takes the focus away from whatever you are doing everytime it begins scanning a new page.Brother apparently knows about this issue and will correct in the next software version.

Other than the above isues, I'm fairly satisfied in the short time I've been using this MFC.If I may comment in response to one of the previous reviews, the beep sound is adjustable and I believe if the user took the time to read the manual, he'd be quite happy with the level of customization available on this machine (I rarely hear of people complaining about too many features).Oh, and yes as stoneaged as it sounds, some people still do occasionally receive faxes.

As far as I'm concerned, the print speed is excellent.Even complex pages print quickly with nearly no delay between pages.A huge improvment over my old HP.Also, I find the scan speed on non complex scans to be excellent.Complex and high res scans are somewhat slower, but they are with many scanners (and certainly about every multifucntion I've run across).Print duplexing is another very nice touch and I'm surprised it works as well as it does. The 8860DN gets the job done and it does them well overall.

Things about the 8860DN I prefer over the new HP 3390 I compared it to.

1) 8860 has a legal size scan plate
2) 8860 will fax forward to email
3) 8860 is $150 less with approx. the same cost per page in consumables.
4)8860 does duplex scan, copy

HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q3950A#ABA) Review

HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax
Average Reviews:

I am impressed with the print quality and the features.I have only two complaints: (1) The software installation is horrendous. Instead of using the normal windows installer, HP had to write their own cludgy dohickey. It almost never can find the printer on the network the first time (even if you can ping and load the HTTP interface), requires a reboot, and takes forever farting around doing who-knows-what. Printer driver software should not take 40 minutes to install.(2) It makes startling and disturbing noises. After printing, about 2-3 minutes later when it is nice and quiet, it lets out a gasp like someone who is startled in fright. Also, 3-4 times a day it runs through the initialization process and spends a good 3-4 minutes clattering around noisily. Then a little later it gasps in fright again. This device is not for the jumpy consumer.Combines poorly with heavy caffeine intake.

HP Color LaserJet 2820 All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner (Q3948A#ABA) Review

HP Color LaserJet 2820 All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner
Average Reviews:

Installation:(Easy) The first thing you should do is insert the installation CD.It will provide very good (explicit) installation instructions. Use the active guide. You can slide the bar back and forth to help you follow the instructions. What I did was to follow the active instruction to the end then I wouldslide the bar where I felt I needed more precise help. This system works very well because unless you move forward arrow, you control what you need to review.

[...]

Print Quality:Excellent!

Scanning:You can tell the difference between the original and the copy. I would guess that there is about a 10 percent (or less) loss in clarity. My other HP scanner/ printershave been very close to original quality. That may not be important to you.

Possible Problem:This machine is a well constructed, professional quality machine. It is bulky and heavy for the average person. Unless you are physically active, more than six feet tall with longarms, don't try to handle this 60 plus pound item by your self. Get a friend to help.Put the printer on a very stabile table (preferably a heavy duty printer stand). A card table is not strong enough.

[...]

Possible Installation Problem:When installing the Imaging Drum, be careful that you line the drum up with the slots provided in the machine. The drum will slide down the slots easily to the bottom. Once at the bottom, press firmly down. It will click once it is in place. The instructions will not tell you to do this. Try to bring down the front cover. If the front cover will not come down and fit flush with the printer body, you have not seated the Imagine Drum correctly.

Paper Placement:The CD describes the HP 2840 which has two paper supply areas. Not even the written instructions tell you about the main tray.It is not a tray at all.On the face of the printer below the "HP" logo, is a finger slot, pull outward. That is your paper tray.At the front edge, pull out the tray extension. Then there is another extension by rotating a panel on top of the tray outward to provide full length paper support. In fact, the support extends about 3/4" beyond the paper.

Would I purchase this machine?I'm pleased with the machine. It is a typical HP quality machine.I haven't tried it's other features. For my purposes, it is fine.I don't see any need for the HP2840.If you are working with two different qualities of paper, then perhaps the HP2840 is the machine you need.

PROBLEM:

Don't look for a manual.HP hasincluded the manual in it's program, according to them.Ask Tech support to direct you to the manual.I haven't found it yet. If they have taken the trouble to provide it on a CD, the could have printed it.This is one area which makes me unhappy.

This is an outstanding color printer.I have used it for more than six months.I'm very happy with it. 3-18-07 PC
