Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer Review

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I selected this copier/printer based on price, features and the Canon name.I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08.It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila!I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.

- Its quick
- Makes clear, clean copies
- Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud
- Top sheet feeder works well, even for multiple sheets
- Toner cartridge was a breeze to install
- Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly, even from another PC on the network
- Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE, not a starter. For those who do not know about this: many new printers, especially when being sold at LOW prices, are sold with a toner cartridge that's only good for a few hundred copies at most.Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge. This is often how the mfg's will move more units, by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner.

With the rebate I couldn't pass this up, although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC.This one DOES NOT.It is only a printer and copier.I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.

I would recommend this printer.

HP LaserJet 1320n Monochrome Network Printer Review

HP LaserJet 1320n Monochrome Network Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As always, here's my honest review with some background.

I've been looking for a good laser printer that I could have on my network for a while now.I have a small office and am an aspiring teacher (currently student teaching). When I can't get to the copy machine at school, I wanted something I could use to do some "mass printouts" for my students.I had an old NEC Superscript, but it frequently paused between pages for a breather and was generally slow.

If you don't need the network card (print server) built into this printer, then the 1320 (not 1320n) would be an amazing value! For me, I wanted the networking, so I was willing to spend the extra money.Setup was relatively simple, changing the IP address was easy, and I was up and running, printing from my Windows XP machines AND my MacOS X (10.3.7) machines.

Now for the printer itself.I'm very impressed with the build quality.Printers have been turning into plastic junk lately, but this one still has metal guts, metal supports holding the paper in the bottom tray, etc.Certain parts seem like generic plastic, but overall it has a nice fit and finish.

Print speeds are amazingly swift! The first thing I put this little print-monster through was a 70-copy worksheet for my students. It took sheet after sheet without a pause! It might grab paper just when the previous sheet is half way through because they seem to keep flying out!Duplex printing was a bonus with this unit - handy in a pinch, but it slows the print speed by about 2-3 times - because it pulls the paper back inside and reprints on the other side...Either way, I dare you to find a quality printer like this, with a duplexer for this price!

Instant on fuser sends paper printing within 8 seconds.Overall, I'm very pleased!I was tempted to get the next model up (2420) but the price difference with no standard duplexer killed that deal.

Wish list?An tiny LCD display telling me whats going on would be nice - but it has lights which do the job just fine. Also - and I'm just dreaming here, it would be nice to see an option for this printer to staple printouts...I know, I've been around pricey copy machines too much!

So, pick yourself up this printer! You won't be sorry. The print quality is very crisp - your well-known HP laser quality, and even graphics are suitable! Its B&W (no color printing), but the money saved on just one toner from time to time as apposed to inkjet cartridges every other month is mind boggling!...and how often do you need color printing? Some may, but for the bulk of what I print, B&W is fine.

High recommended! ...feel free to contact me if you have any questions that I might be able to help you with.

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA) Review

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake.I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus. This new machine is definitely a major improvement.

First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system.I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it.

It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet. It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length - it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back). It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black - CMYK) so this can be costly. The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color. It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long. And when the toner is low, you get a warning. You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages).

The Bad: I'll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder.I may be doing something wrong, but I've found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time.Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I'm done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side. You can't really do that with this. And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best. You can't simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it.You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print. It did print generic Avery labels okay though.

All in all, it is great.Oh, and there's one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn't know these terms before). For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the 'Finishing' tab and selected 'Print on Both Sides' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything.I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect.

If you don't need to have this printer on a network, and you don't need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser.Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars.I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it's superb.Get yours now - the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go.You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don't have one. Enjoy and thank you for reading.

HP Color LaserJet 4500N Printer Review

I have used my 4500 for about 6 months now and could not be more in love with it. I have owned about 6-7 color inkjets before this and finally made the big move to color laser. You can print perfect photos on just about any kind of paper.I would like to see some "true" glossy paper on the market for photos, however. Most specialty papers for inkjet printers (mostly glossy) will not work with the laserjet because of the heat. Keep in mind you can not do heat transfers with a laserjet printer. There are four cartridges that make up the 4500's color. They are VERY expensive, but I am still using the same one that came with the printer and have printed well over a thousand photos. Long term is much cheaper to run than an inkjet.

Konica Minolta PagePro 1350W Laser Printer Review

Konica Minolta PagePro 1350W Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was a great printer as far as print quality and speed... but what Minolta doesn't tell you in advance is that if you either refill the cartridge or use a non-new or non-factory cartridge, the printer goes into "deep cleaning" mode (permanently) while printing and slows down to about 6ppm. It won't go back up to regular speed unless you install a new Minolta cartridge.
This, of course, is a completely bogus excuse for forcing you to buy Minolta toner (which costs $130).
I called tech support to confirm that there was no workaround, and the woman I spoke with had received 4 complaints that morning on that issue.
So I sent it back and bought a Samsung ML-1710, which, although a little bit slower (17ppm instead of 21) can use any toner and seems like an excellent little printer.

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays Review

Brother HL-5370DWT Laser Printer with Wireless Networking, Duplex and Dual Paper Trays

I've been using HP stuff since the first scientific calculator, the HP-32, that came out in 1973. It used to be rock solid, designed by engineers to be used by engineers. Sadly, it's now cheap junk. The scanners in HP's all-in-one's seemed designed to fail in the thirteenth month after purchase.

Some of HP's recent printers do not even implement their own Printer Control Language properly (HP PCL).

This Brother printer works. It implements PCL5 correctly, as well as its emulation of PostScript. I've networked computers for fifteen years, so setup went very easily. The hardest part was hauling the CD-ROM to the various computers on the network, since Windows did not have the driver built in. A no-brainer.

The supplies work out to 1.4 cents a page (toner and drum). Hard to beat that.

Samsung ML-1630W Personal Wireless Mono Laser Printer Review

Samsung ML-1630W Personal Wireless Mono Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm giving five stars for the unit itself, but getting it operational was another matter altogether.

Living in a smallish Manhattan apartment, I needed a compact laser printer that wouldn't look conspicuous on the bookcase of my multifunction living room/dining room/office.I figured its low profile and sleek design would actually camouflage it quite nicely with my stereo components. But the main thing was I needed it to be WIRELESS, since the computer itself is on the other side of the room, and I didn't want to run wires all over the place.

The unit came packed with a "Mac Quick Set-Up" diagram -- only pictures, not even words explaining how to set up the unit (I guess they figured they'd save the cost of multi-language translations). The diagram didn't explain much, so I popped in the set-up CD in my Mac and went through the steps. The software downloaded, but the unit wasn't working. In fact, the computer wasn't even recognizing that there WAS a printer.

So I called Samsung support, and after waiting on hold for 20 minutes, was connected to a woman named "Lisa" who could barely speak English. After stumbling through the language barrier and her insultingly simple troubleshooting questions ("Is your computer turned on?"), we finally got to the heart of the problem:she said I needed to HARD WIRE the printer to my wireless router."But the printer itself is supposed to be wireless," I protested."No, it's wireless because it goes through your router," she insisted."But that's stupid," I retorted, "because if I wanted to hard-wire my printer to my wireless router, I could have done that with ANY printer!Where's the wireless functionality of THIS printer?"

Of course she couldn't help me, but she gave me another Samsung tech support number to call -- only, of course, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.Convenient!Because we're all at home hooking up our computers during those hours, right?

I called Samsung from work the next day.The guy started walking me through the troubleshooting steps."Hang on, I'm writing this all down," I said."Wait," he said, "you're not in front of your computer now?""No," I said, "I'm at WORK right now -- just like you."

Well, it seemed that English-challenged "Lisa" from the night before failed to give me the number for the support office that's open AFTER hours, which this guy shared with me.So I called later that evening, and was immediately connected to a guy in Seattle who sounded like he's barely out of high school.FINALLY -- someone who knows what he's talking about!!

"Steve" walked me through a labyrinthine maze of commands and menus in my computer, having me enter series of numbers and periods - closing this box, opening another -- entering more numbers -- reopening -- for about 30 minutes. Then he had me connect my wireless printer with a USB cable to my wireless router.Apparently the initial "handshake" with the computer requires this.Once the "handshake" is over, you can disconnect the USB cable, and VOILA -- the printer is now completely wireless forever and ever, amen.

Long story short, I ended up setting up my printer on a shelf in my hall closet, and amazingly the wireless functionality is strong enough to pierce my 8-inch thick prewar plaster walls, even with the heavy mahogany closet door closed.

I would highly recommend this printer to anyone who needs an attractive compact laser printer, as well as the flexibility of setting it up with no cords (except, of course, the power cord). However, Samsung should just do everyone a favor and rather than including a set-up diagram and CD, just tape a business card to the top of the unit with Steve's phone number.

Total set-up time:4 hours.

C544DN Color Laser Printer Review

After a reload of the OS, my old HP laser was no longer compatible with my Mac computer, so I went looking for a color laser that did duplex printing (trying to be a bit green). My use is at home for personal as well as some business printing.

The set up was easy and the instructions clear.Printing in B&W single sided is fast and of high quality.I find the color printing to be a bit muted and not photo-like, but still acceptable. The biggest negative is the duplex printing. It works, but...When I select two-sided printing, it takes forever to print. It is so slow that I have given up using it completely. As I was hurrying out of the house on a road trip, I tried to print a Google map in duplex, and it took so long I simply left the house without the map.I don't know what is going on inside, but this is so bad I'm shocked it ever was released.

Once I ignore duplex printing, and treat it like a nice feature I will rarely if ever use, then I am generally satisfied with the printer and recommend it for the price.
