Plantronics CS50/HL10 BUNDLE ( 66664-01 ) Review

Plantronics CS50/HL10 BUNDLE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My old 5-year-old wireless headset (which I loved) from another vendor just died, and I bought the CS50/HL10 bundle based on the reviews. It doesn't disappoint.

I work a computer job, typing and talking every day.And sometimes I like to get a cup of coffe in the middle of a conference call, so having a wireless unit is very nice.

The CS50 headset is very lightweight, and comfortable to wear over the head.I don't like over-the-ear phones so didn't even try that option. The headset is completely self-contained; that means no wire to a belt unit that snags on doorknobs!

The CS50 has good range, the signal goes through walls, and I notice little to no interference with other wireless phones or electronics in the building.

There are separate volume controls for the earpiece and the microphone; both take some tweaking the first time you use it.The earpiece volume is on the headset, so it's easy to adjust mid-conversation.The earpiece also has a mute button that turns off your microphone to handle interruptions.

The HL10 handset lifter is awesome. If you're away from your desk and the phone rings, you hear a beep in your ear and push a button on the headset. The remote lifter picks up the phone's handset and you're talking. The HL10 does require that you have a business-style phone with the dial pad on the base -- not on the handset!I have an AT&T 2-line phone that will answer whichever line is ringing when the handset is lifted -- and that's the reason they have made this unit the way it is, so it works in any business phone environment.(The CS50 base unit plugs in between the phone's base and handset, and does not have its own number pad.)If you don't have the HL10, you take the phone off the hook manually for each call with the CS50.

For comparison, my previous wireless unit had a weak handset lifter that almost died before the wireless unit did. This HL10 is snappy when lifting the handset, and I can tell it's going to be much more durable mechanically. The HL10 also has a much smaller footprint, taking up no desk space.

My only complaint is that the power on LED is solid red, and the charging light is flashing yellow.Because of the "stop light" association, both colors trigger a "slow down, something must be wrong" reaction at first, but I'm getting used to it.In my opinion, the power light should be solid amber or green and charging light flashing green or solid amber. That's a minor aesthetic complaint though.

The product works exactly as expected, and is much smaller and lighter than I expected. When I bought this bundle, considering the free shipping, Amazon was only $10 more than the cheapest price I found online, which was on eBay.So for peace of mind I chose Amazon.com over saving $10.It arrived quickly in good packaging, and I've been using it every day since.

NETGEAR ProSafe WNDAP330 - Wireless access point - 802.11b/g/n (draft) - external Review

NETGEAR ProSafe WNDAP330 - Wireless access point - 802.11b/g/n - external
Average Reviews:

I have been running Netgear ProSafe networking equipment for many years for my small office at home. Due to its typically high reliability, performance and value I always stick with the prosafe line (geared toward business or enterprise use) over the consumer grade networking gear which is often unreliable. This is the first 802.11n unit that I found which was designed for the enterprise. So I broke down and picked it up for about $300 with shipping. The most important thing to know about this unit is that despite their advertising this unit as a dual band with both 802.11n and 802.11abg radios; the radios cannot both be used at the same time. You can only turn on one or the other. This is a major limitation as far as I'm concerned. For those of us replacing old 802.11g equipment my preference would be for this unit to be able to support 802.11g legacy clients with one of the radios and also be able to support 802.11n 5ghz clients with the other 5ghz radio.

The range of the unit in 5ghz 40 mhz mode is quite short.Definately less than the WG102 802.11g unit that it was replacing.Since the range is so short I will have to get an additional unit and put it upstairs. Also, the firmware is a bit buggy and reliability doesn't seem as good as the mature wg102 unit.I'm certain that reliability will improve over time and perhaps speed too; but righ now I'd recommend sticking with 802.11g unless you absolutely have to upgrade to 802.11n.********************************

update

After countless hours of troubleshooting, I've finally narrowed down the problem. The unit is just not reliable with WMM turned on regardless of 20/40 mhz. With WMM turned off the unit is super reliable but only runs at 54mbps.

Stay away from this unit until more firmware updates are available resolving the WMM problem with Intel 5300 and Intel 4965 laptop nic cards.Don't know if this applies to other vendor nic cards.

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter Review

Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(see my latest update at bottom)

We purchased this unit to try out on vacation at a beach house rental where typically we have to connect to neighborhood hot spots. At best we usually have to manipulate our laptop to just the right position to find a sporadic at best connection (you know-- we're ultimately standing on our head, wearing a foil helmet, and holding the laptop on edge etc-- that kind of thing).

I'll have to report back to you from the beach house next week but right now I just pulled it out of the box in our urban neighborhood setting at home. We typically have an abundance of signals here but only 1 or 2 have been connectable using my Netgear Rangemax 240 (which does better than my other standard b/g wireless adapter cards).

The Hi-Gain picks up a ton of signals in each direction I point it and is able to connect to nearly anything with a signal strength of 20% or better.

The Quick Start guide warns you all over the place to be gentle when moving the antenna on its axis or swivel, so comments from others on fragility seem to be correct. It looks like for travel purposes you'll need to keep it packaged in its box (6"x8"x4")

But I'd have to say-- so far so good. I have no immediate criticism or disappointment, other than the Wireless LAN Utility has a somewhat undersized window showing available network info--but this is a small issue.

I'll report back from the beach house next week to share what our final verdict is.

Oh the USB cord is no more than 6 feet long so you will need an extension or a longer USB cord (I ordered a 10' extension for $8). By the way, if you intend to replace the USB cord rather than use an extension, it uses a mini-USB connector (the type you see on cameras and camcorders-- your standard connector as you see on printer will not work.

-----------------------------------------------
AUGUST 4TH BEACH HOUSE UPDATE
As promised, here is a bit more after a week of trying it out.The good news is it does consistently work. The ability to move the dish around to locate the best signal is a big plus when you are in some remote area. I am currently connected solidly to a site about 1/2 mile away across a Bay (I have a clear line of sight) with 2 of 5 signal strength bars illuminated.

We just repeated a download speed test and confirmed the wireless connection at 4861kbs down and about 420kbs up.

To be honest though, I'd say the HWU8DD appears only slightly more sensitive than my current pcmcia adapter, a Netgear Rangemax 240 (WPNT511). Again the advantage here is the ability to move the dish to the best reception spot rather than manipulate the computer itself.

Again, the short length of the USB cord (about 5') means in most cases you really need an extension, but with the 10' USB passive extension we also purchased from Amazon, I'm able to sit where I want to and let the antenna do its work. The bad news is I have a cord draped across the floor which may drive my wife a bit nuts at times.

We also discovered this is not compatible with my wife or daughter's Mac (also not compatible with Linux.)I just checked the Hawking website that tells me only Windows Vista 32, XP, 2000, Me, and 98Se are supported with drivers.

Finally, I also have to agree with those who note both size and fragility again. For traveling "road warriors", this is a relatively bulky, and somewhat cheaply made little plastic unit to be taking along on your flights or packed in a car somewhere unless you are desperate.I can see it being totally destroyed in my luggage at the airport, so we won't be taking it along flying to Chicago next week. (Isn't it possible to create a flatter, more compact and durable unit these days?)

Who is this perfect for?

I'd say the RV'er is going to love it. It's great even here at the beach house where we're not worrying about little people playing with or tripping over the cord. At home, I'd hate to be carrying this little thing everywhere my laptop goes, though with a stationary computer, it may be a good solution.

If you've tried everything else, I'd definitely give this a test-drive, but keep in mind the need for a good return policy if you don't like it or if it doesn't work for you.

I'm giving it 4 stars because it does work as promised.

---------------------
Sept 19, 2007 Update:STOPPED WORKING
As mentioned in my review, the dish is somewhat fragile. Yesterday we noticed it quit functioning. Perhaps the box was jostled a bit too much, or the dish popped off its stand once too often (the dish connector pops out of its base sometimes leaving the connecting wire exposed or potentially vulnerable to breaking its solders).

I looked on the Hawking website and am going to try to return it to the manufacturer if I can.I am past the 30 day Amazon return period.

No bitterness, but just a little bit of frustration. Drop my rating to 2 stars.

I purchased this last week and hooked it up last night. It worked perfectly for me.Installation was easy and I didn't have to make any adjustments to the settings.I am about 500 ft from the source and it is in a separate concrete building. While I am only able to get about 50% signal strength I think that this is great.I am going through multiple interior walls and two concrete block walls over a distance of 500 ft.With a normal wireless card it couldn't even find a network let alone one strong enough to get a good connection.I also have a friend that lives in a apartment that has WIFI at the clubhouse. She is two buildings away but has a window with a view of the building. She set the receiver in the window and was able to get around 40% signal.Considering that she got nothing before this is good.I would definitely recommend trying this dish.

Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop Review

Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop
Average Reviews:

I have had this cordless set for several days now. Here are my thoughts:

First the bad news. There could be better quality control on this. The first unit I purchased had a right-arrow key that would not work properly (all other keys worked fine). Another reviewer of this model here said that the space bar did not work properly on their unit. I liked everything else so much, I returned mine and got another unit, which is now working properly. The only other negatives I can mention are: (a) the temperature on the numeric keypad ALWAYS reads 77 degrees; (b) the Media key on the numeric keypad always seems to launch the default media player, no matter what I set it to (the media key on the full keyboard works fine).

Now the good news. I love the sleek look and modular design of this set, and it happens to match my HP Pavillion Notebook perfectly. I love the small USB receiver. I love the profile and tactile feel of the flat keyboard. I love the features that let you use this both on a desktop (in my case a docking station) or on the road with your laptop. The mouse is the least sexy of the three main parts, but nevertheless works well and the off switch is a nice feature; its main appeal is that it can be used on the desktop and as a portable laptop mouse. The wireless USB reciever, while small (a good thing), still has a very sufficient range.

All in all, this set has solved a number of problems for me and I strongly recommend it. Just be sure to check ALL the keys, etc. immediately when you get it and exchange it for another unit if any of the keys do not respond.

Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 710 Laser Review

Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 710 Laser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I admit, I'm brutal on keyboards.I work long hours from home and type quite fast so a keyboard tends to wear out after a relatively short period of time due to the constant absue I inflict on it.Everyone always gets a kick out of my keyboards with the keys worn smooth and few if any letters left on them.So far this one has handled my abuse quite well.I am impressed.

Combined with the fact that I am female and don't have large hands, keyboard/mouse selection is more limited for me.What I mainly look for in a keyboard is size (not too small, not too large) and it must not have a huge mouse.Keyboards nowadays are getting larger and larger complete with software that bogs down and tries to run your computer.Plus, I can't stand a huge keyboard taking up my desk space. Also, in case you noticed, mice are getting funkier looking as ever lately. There is only so much that can be done for ergonomics...so now they are trying to go stylish too.

When I picked up this keyboard off the shelf to test (it was about the 30th model I tried) I was instantly in love with it.My hands fit perfectly on the keyboard with my palms resting just on the front edge. With an overall depth of 7.5 inches it didn't hog up my desk either.Slim-line design without being compact.

Within a few days of purchase and use I started messing around with the options it has.Wow!I'm sold.I would have paid double for this keyboard.I like being able to adjust my audio by simply pressing one of 3 audio buttons on the top front (lower, mute, higher) and the email button right below that opens my Outlook for me.The magnifying glass brings up a side window with Google. But it doesn't end there - on the far right of the keyboard are 5 keys which have been streamlined into the design so you barely notice they are there - all for music. With one touch - my music player opens. The other buttons are for shuffling, next, back, and play/pause.Sweet!

On the other side of the keyboard are 5 other buttons similar to those - to do with picture editing.I haven't played around with those yet..but am looking forward to.Also there are special function buttons to use...then again I don't like installing companies software on my computer so I haven't experimented with those yet either.Maybe in due time.

This last one may seem a bit silly...but it's a darn good idea! The most common keyboard shortcuts are printed on the SIDE of the keys.So for instance, the keyboard shortcut for REDO is CTRL+Y.On the CTRL key is a little diamond and on the side of the Y key is a diamond with the word REDO.So at a glance if you forget a shortcut...it's there for you.Smart idea.

As I have a laptop as my main computer for now...I use this keyboard as an add-on.It's overall size and design allows me to put it in my laptop backpack bag with all my other gear and travel as I wish with ease for the ultimate work-on-the-go experience.I have not had ANY connection issues with this set unlike some other brands I've tried including my Microsoft Bluetooth set (major $$$ and a big disaster).

The mouse - simple, but quite functional too.It doesn't look like anything special. But it works quite well. Not too much...not too little. The scroll wheel works fine and the mouse precision is excellent (what you would expect from a laser).I have not had any surface issues with this one yet - and I do not use a mouse pad.

My only complaint I've had with this set is so minor it's barely mentionable. They moved my END key.As I am used to typing without looking at the keyboard when I reach for the END key it's not there. :)I'm sure within another month or so I'll be used to it...just irritated me for the first few days.

I give this set 5 stars hands-down.If I see it on sale I will for sure buy another one - with 4 computers in our house they will be replaced by this model one by one!

Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Laser (Black) Review

Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Laser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Laser to replace my Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 (which I'd come to loathe). With the hardware, I'm very satisfied. The keyboard is a nice ergonomic version which I'd grown used to from my long-ago Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro.It's got a nice typing feel (not too hard, not too soft) and I've had no problems with it (the keyboard in the Microsoft Desktop 6000 dropped keystrokes). The only negatives I can come up with for the keyboard are that the space bar makes a bit of a clanking sound (which I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read about it here) and the palm rest does show the location of your hands from the oil residue (trivial really). The mouse is very comfortable and I've had no problems with it at all.

Where I have had problems is with the Logitech Setpoint 3.3 software.I'm using Vista, so since it's so new, that might be the issue (though the Logitech forums indicate the XP version has similar problems). In my case, even though the software loaded without trouble, I sometimes couldn't open the Setpoint program. It would basically hang when I attempted it.I also was getting no mouse status from the Logitech icon (keyboard status, yes -- mouse status, no).The forums indicate there's also a problem with the Secure Connect hotkey of CTRL-SHIFT (it conflicts with quite a few important keystrokes in Vista and applications) and with multiple keystrokes generating spurious letters.Because Setpoint was hanging on my system, I just uninstalled it and am running on the native Vista drivers (again, without problem).Without Setpoint, I'm lacking some features. But, I rarely use those things, anyway.

So, overall, I give the hardware an Excellent rating of 5 stars out of 5.However, because of the problems with the Setpoint 3.3 software, I'm subtracting 1 star.Still, that leaves an overall Very Good rating of 4 stars out of 5.Recommended.

I have used my 4500 for about 6 months now and could not be more in love with it. I have owned about 6-7 color inkjets before this and finally made the big move to color laser. You can print perfect photos on just about any kind of paper.I would like to see some "true" glossy paper on the market for photos, however. Most specialty papers for inkjet printers (mostly glossy) will not work with the laserjet because of the heat. Keep in mind you can not do heat transfers with a laserjet printer. There are four cartridges that make up the 4500's color. They are VERY expensive, but I am still using the same one that came with the printer and have printed well over a thousand photos. Long term is much cheaper to run than an inkjet.

I've been using HP stuff since the first scientific calculator, the HP-32, that came out in 1973. It used to be rock solid, designed by engineers to be used by engineers. Sadly, it's now cheap junk. The scanners in HP's all-in-one's seemed designed to fail in the thirteenth month after purchase.

Some of HP's recent printers do not even implement their own Printer Control Language properly (HP PCL).

This Brother printer works. It implements PCL5 correctly, as well as its emulation of PostScript. I've networked computers for fifteen years, so setup went very easily. The hardest part was hauling the CD-ROM to the various computers on the network, since Windows did not have the driver built in. A no-brainer.

The supplies work out to 1.4 cents a page (toner and drum). Hard to beat that.

I ordered the Samsung N150 after much research and have not been disappointed. The main reasons for my choice were: 1. Matte screen, which I prefer over the glossy screens of other netbooks I've seen in stores, 2. Battery life, 3. Matte blue finish of cover doesn't show fingerprints, 4. Positive reviews of keyboard, 5. Super-quiet fan. And so far, all of these features have lived up to my hopes. Other nice features: silky smooth operation of lid hinges, and the built-in webcam and microphone.

One downside as noted by a previous reviewer: the initial setup of the hard drive and software takes a LONG time (one hour, more or less). From what I've read, there are other netbooks out there with much shorter setup times. Fortunately, you only have to go through setup once with this netbook. Be patient, and you'll get through it fine. Just don't expect to be doing useful work until the day after your box comes in the mail.

Another negative is that the processor seems relatively slow (compared to desktop PCs or full-size laptops) at some operations like booting, doing data transfer, and unpacking/installing software. This is just because of the processor, which has been optimized for low power usage. And I imagine that other netbooks have the same shortcoming, so it's no particular knock against the N150. It's the price all netbooks pay for being small and power-stingy.

Having said that, once the Samsung gets itself booted and ready to go, it does fine at web browsing, email, word processing, and video watching. I was able to watch a streaming Netflix video with no problems. Speakers are decent, but a battery-powered iPod speaker like an Altec Lansing iM237 plugged into the headphone jack gives a much better and louder sound.

Suggestions:

1. Allow at least one hour for initial setup. Be patient.

2. Either turn off the automatic "Windows Update" in the control panel, or change the frequency of updates from "every day" to "one day per week." The automatic update hogs the processor each time it runs, and you'll be wondering why the netbook is running so slowly every morning.

3. In the Start menu, type "Task Manager" in the search box and put a shortcut for the Task Manager in your Start menu or on your taskbar. Get familiar with the Task Manager because it shows you CPU usage, memory usage, and what processes are running in the background. When the blue "hard disk" light starts flashing and the netbook slows down, the Task Manager will tell you why.

4. In the Start menu, type "gadgets" in the search box, and install the "CPU" gadget on your desktop. The large dial gives a constant readout of CPU usage, and the small dial a readout of RAM usage. Another good tool for monitoring the CPU workload. When the needle is pegged in the red zone (e.g. at startup) you're not going to get much done. Wait til the needle drops out of the red zone before trying to do any other CPU-intensive tasks.

5. Forget the installed McAfee antivirus program and download the free "Microsoft Security Essentials". It's free and it works great. Saved my other laptop from numerous attacks. Also download the free "Malwarebytes" program.

6. Forget the MS Office "trial" software and download the free Open Office, which works just like MS Office and can open MS Office files, and an save in MS Office format. (Open Office also plays better with this netbook than the included MS Works package. I downloaded Open Office and then uninstalled both MS Office and MS Works.)

Some owners have reported that replacing the 1GB RAM stick with 2 GB RAM improves performance. Before going that route, I tried the Windows ReadyBoost feature, which Microsoft says will improve performance in some operations. Exactly which operations is not clear, and when I tried using ReadyBoost with a 4GB USB emory stick, I wasn't able to discern any difference.

All in all, the Samsung is a competent netbook in a nice package. Two thumbs up.

Update: After upgrading to 2 GB RAM and having used this netbook for a couple of weeks, I like it even better. Upgrading the RAM definitely helped performance. And the matte screen is definitely better than the glossies, and the keyboard is much better than my friend's Asus eeePC keyboard. The trackpad is just too small for more than occasional emergency use, though, so I use an iHome mid-size wireless optical mouse, which I love and highly recommend. Being freed from the tiny trackpad and the marginal 1 GB RAM makes this little machine a pleasure to use.

PS--If you do install Microsoft Security Essentials, be sure to follow their instructions for uninstalling other antivirus programs first (in this case, McAfee). I apparently failed to do so, and eventually noticed an oscillation in CPU usage as shown by the Task Manager when the CPU should have been idle. A Google search suggested a conflict between two competing antivirus programs. I went back and uninstalled McAfee by using the "appwiz.cpl" command per instructions on the Microsoft Security Essentials site, and problem solved.

I researched and found that cartridges for this machine are a lot cheaper than those for HP's and the toner that comes with the printer has a page yield of 1500 color and 2500 b&w.The Hp'scame with toner that had only 750 page yield then you had to pay approx $140 for the toner cartridges for replacement when with this one you can purchase toner cartridges for right around $70 which is half the price with more page yield. So far I have printed 450 pages on the starter cartridges and the toner amount has not lowered and the print quality is excellent!

C544DN Color Laser Printer Review

After a reload of the OS, my old HP laser was no longer compatible with my Mac computer, so I went looking for a color laser that did duplex printing (trying to be a bit green). My use is at home for personal as well as some business printing.

The set up was easy and the instructions clear.Printing in B&W single sided is fast and of high quality.I find the color printing to be a bit muted and not photo-like, but still acceptable. The biggest negative is the duplex printing. It works, but...When I select two-sided printing, it takes forever to print. It is so slow that I have given up using it completely. As I was hurrying out of the house on a road trip, I tried to print a Google map in duplex, and it took so long I simply left the house without the map.I don't know what is going on inside, but this is so bad I'm shocked it ever was released.

Once I ignore duplex printing, and treat it like a nice feature I will rarely if ever use, then I am generally satisfied with the printer and recommend it for the price.
