It was very easy to install on my desktop Mac. It has worked flawlessly out of the box, and the price was very competitive. I have used it for about one month so far.

I read reviews which told me that it was a little noisy and I thought that this would not bother me. I agree that the noise is not loud. It is a mild continuous background hum. But I was wrong.... It does get to me. The noise never goes away, and is the only drawback to this neat, small footprint, shiny black repository of huge amounts of data.

(More customer reviews)This product was purchased for exclusive use as an external HDD for Dish Network's ViP 722.The "Home Edition" of the WD My Book has 3 ports: USB 2.0, Firewire, and SATA.This makes this HDD extremely flixable should it be decided to use the HDD for PC or even Tivo.

This HDD works flawlessy with the Dish ViP 722. It was connected to the 722 right out of the box and quickly formatted for immediate use.Transfers and playbacks to and from this HDD have been flawless.It is quiet and very good-looking.This HDD actually blends in very well, and is small enough to place additional My Book's for very neat and aesthetic appearance on shelves or TV Stands. It is the best looking and compact of all my external HDD's. I leave mine on at all times, so the blue indicator light is always illuminated.It makes a great night light.

One thing: the blue lights feature that indicates how much capacity of remains on the HDD works when using it connected to a PC.That feature will not work connected to the ViP 722.But I don't mind that, as it is very easy to check remaining capacity using the 722 menus.

I highly recommend this external HDD for use by Dish Network customers for their ViP series of satellite boxes, and I plan to buy this item again should I need more room.the 750GB is the current "official" maximum that Dish Network supports.HOWEVER, in the very near future Dish will officially support HDD's greater than 750GB.

(More customer reviews)I got this portable hard drive recently to use for Time Machine with my MacBook Pro. Some notes and observations so far:

1) First off, the hard drive's ruby red color is not as bright as the Amazon photo. It's a darker red, which I prefer.

2) As with most portable hard drives, it is very quiet. Sitting a foot or two away from it, you should barely hear it, if at all.

3) This hard drive does not spin down after a certain amount of inactivity (unlike, for instance, a WD Passport, which spins down after 10 minutes or so of inactivity). You may or may not prefer this, depending on what you use it for. I use mine as a Time Machine, which backs up my hard drive every hour. I prefer the fact that it doesn't keep spinning down and spinning back up every hour (many argue that this is worse for a hard drive than simply leaving it on all the time, but there are varying opinions on this).

4) I wouldn't say the hard drive runs hot. It feels warm to the touch when idling all day like mine. However it may get hot if being used for constant data access. The only time it has felt somewhat hot is when I did the initial ~200GB backup of my hard drive.

5) This hard drive works well for daisy chaining. I have it connected to my MBP via Firewire 800, and I have a Firewire 400 external hard drive connected to the Iomega. NOTE: If you have the Iomega connected to your computer via USB, you cannot daisy chain a Firewire device.

6) Size-wise, it is a bit bigger than my (USB-only) WD Passport but it is still fairly compact.

7) The exterior feels like plastic, but the box says that the case is made from aluminum, so I'll trust that it is.

8) The light on the back of the drive is VERY bright. It actually projects light onto my wall. The color of the light may vary. I bought two of these drives from two different Best Buys... One has a blue light, the other has a white light. Either way, I found the light to be pretty annoying, so I simply covered it up with a small piece of black electrical tape. Works well.

9) Comes with a USB cable, Firewire 400 cable, and Firewire 800 cable.

10) One review noted: "No on-off switch, drive does not stop when computer sleeps, does not stop when computer turned off!". As far as bus-powered 2.5" portable hard drives go, I have not seen any with an on-off switch, although some may exist. If you want that, you will probably want to go with a 3.5" external desktop drive. HOWEVER, I think it is important to note that the Iomega WILL power down when the computer is sleeping or shut off. I was worried when I read this review because I thought the drive would keep spinning when I put my computer to sleep, but this is not the case. The only thing that stays on is the light. It will only turn off when you unplug the drive from the computer.

Overall, this drive works perfectly as a Time Machine. It is fast, small, quiet, not too hot, and unobtrusive. After the initial backup, you should barely notice successive backups (unless they are really big ones). The price is also great for a portable hard drive with three different connectivity options. The only thing I can't review is hard drive longevity... Only time will tell. Here's hoping that it lasts for a long time.--UPDATE February 5, 2010--

Hard drive is still working extremely well for me as a Time Machine. A few new notes and observations:

1) A lot of people have been reporting that the top of their cases are detaching, which is pretty discouraging. I've been lucky, as the only problem I've had is that one of the front corners has come up about 1-2 millimeters. However, the top of the case is still in place and secure for the most part. I bought another one of these hard drives for my father, and the top of his case has not detached at all. I should note that I leave my hard drive on all day and sometimes overnight, whereas my father only turns his on every once in a while (when he turns his computer on), but it is generally turned off. I did buy my hard drives from Best Buy... Perhaps they received a shipment of units that were of better quality than what Amazon received?

2) This is a strange one... My hard drive runs SIGNIFICANTLY cooler than when I first got it. It hardly feels warm at all, even though it's spinning away all day. I don't really understand why, but I can't complain.

3) My thanks to A.W. Jester for pointing out that you must register online to get the 3 year warranty. I had missed this at first!

This product seems pretty hit-or-miss based on the workmanship. On the one hand, I'd have a hard time recommending it based on the other reviews I've read. On the other hand, I would recommend it based on my own experience. It's a great value for the price if you're lucky enough to get a good one.

(More customer reviews)Previously bought many (several dozen) of the 1Tb predecessor to this 2Tb firewireA,B,ESATA drive. Despite the bad reviews on this site, I have only ever had 1 drive fail and that was because it was dropped onto concrete and even then I replaced the hard disk in the enclosure which continues to run 24/7. So my experience is that these drives in all sizes and interfaces are fast, silent, space efficient and reliable. Firewire B (800) compatibility is hard to find and often very expensive, in this case if you watch the price of these and buy when it dips you will get a good generic solution at an affordable price that works fast on Macs (Firewire B/800) and has flexibility for other interfaces. Thoroughly recommend this, certainly my experience of this brand is extensive and uniformly positive.

Having just moved from Windows to Mac (OS X 10.5.2) I'm used to long, involved nightmare hardware installations.Between OS X and the utilities supplied by LaCie on this drive, the whole business was up and running in about ten minutes.It took me longer to figure out which was the FireWare 800 cable than it did to finish the rest of the installation!

I have a new iMac with both FireWire 400 and 800 ports, and I'm using the LaCie as my Time Machine drive, so I opted to use the fastest interface available, the FireWire 800.The installation had four steps:

1.Physically attach the footplate to the drive so it could sit on its thin side, as in the photo with this review.Tools:included Allen wrench.Time: 60 sec

2.Attach the FW800 cable and the power supply.Plug in same.Tools: none.Time:60 sec.

3.Turn on the drive.Tools:finger.Time: 15 sec.

4.Click through the installation program that pops up on the screen.The last click is to inform OS X that this will be my TimeMachine drive.Tools:mouse, finger.Time:5 min.

Total time:7.25 min.(It took me about 2.5 minutes to figure out which cable to use.)

The FireWire interface is so fast, it did the initial TimeMachine 30GB backup in about 30 minutes.

The drive is quiet, it's fast, and it has a cool blue light on the front.It also has an auto power switch that detects when the iMac is seeking from the drive and switches on drive power.

What's not to like?

(More customer reviews)Like it says in the review title, I really WANT to like this drive. Unfortunately, I can't. I don't. And I probably won't. Ever. Why?

I bought one of these from another vendor (sorry Amazon, their price was better). I installed the drive on my 24" aluminum iMac (which I DID buy from Amazon, good job, guys). The drive recognized fine on firewire 800, and I set Time Machine to use it for backups.

Then the problems started. The drive would "freeze" when it went into suspend mode, and it wouldn't come back. OS X is too stupid to stop trying to access a "dead" drive, so the suspended/frozen drive would hang the system. The only solution was to power down the drive (if possible), or remove the firewire cable. Worse, sometimes the drive wouldn't power down using the power button, so I had to pull the power cord. NOT good.

Once the frozen drive was out of the firewire chain, the OS would recover semi-gracefully, with a "Device Removal" error. I figured it was a fluke, so I put the drive first in the firewire chain. No luck. Then I changed cables. No luck. Okay, try the drive as the ONLY firewire drive. No luck. It would still freeze, and still hang the system.

So, I figured I just had a defective drive. No problem. I already had another on order, so I sent the first back to the vendor and waited for the second to arrive.

Same problems with the second drive. I used every connection available: firewire 800, firewire 400, and even USB (iMac's don't come with eSATA, so I don't know if it's a problem too). No luck with any connection, OR any cable (I have several available, which work with other drives). The My Book Studio drive still hangs AT LEAST once a day, usually several times.

So the second drive is going back for a refund, and I'm going to call the other vendor and just have them refund my money for the "defective" drive already in transit as a return.

Now, why do I want to like this drive?

Pros:
- It's good-looking
- It's quiet (because it's fanless)
- Quadruple interface (nice!)
- It's small

Cons:
- It just doesn't work... do I really need any MORE cons?

When the drive started giving me problems, I went looking for a solution (updated firmware, updated Button Manager software, SOMETHING). I found several people on the Apple Discussion Forums with the same problem, which made me realize that the drive itself was the issue.

Google for "my book studio freeze" and you can read the Apple Support discussion, which will lead you to more problem discussions.

That being said, I love Western Digital, and they're my first choice for external drives. I just think they have some MAJOR teething pains with the My Book Studio line. And since other Mac users love them, I suspect that WD Studio drives simply don't like the new iMacs. But since I spent $2000 on my computer, and $200 on the drive, the drive is the one that gets returned. Sorry, WD.

If you want a good, reliable drive for your iMac, I've had lots of luck with LaCie, and I've heard really good things about OWC drives. But if you're a tried-and-true WD fan... stay away from THIS drive.

(More customer reviews)Way better than the older freeagent external drive it replaced so far. It's smaller and lighter and the software to turn off the drive light actually works in Vista x64 now. What I really like is how the light stays off even when the power is completely off until you switch it back on. Previously you had to turn off the light every single time.Runs quiet and cool. No stuttering or failures so far. Pros - more than 2x as much space as my older external. Included software way better than older freeagent drives and works in Vista x64. Cons - doesn't come with esata cable so I wouldn't know if esata problems are as bad as suggested. It does come with firewire and usb cables and I'm using the faster firewire and works great with that as I said. Included stand crud and not worth using. Choice of white contrasting power and connection cables poor. Only 1.36TB formatted:( and if you are using nvidia nforce chipset even less space will show up in Vista due to bug:
1.5TB (ST31500341AS) or larger SATA hard drive only showing 1.1TB capacity in Windows Vista

Backup program is still not that great and not intuitive at all. I tried using the encryption feature and it's not worth using since it takes a long time to decrypt if you have thousands of files!

Don't know why this 1.5TB drive from Seagate is so much reliable than their normal 1.5TB retail drives?
The other 1.5TB Seagate drive I have installed inside my PC is making terrible screeching sounds like it's about to die anytime now :(
Already had to RMA several internal 1.5TB Seagate drives :(

(More customer reviews)I have had a 300G "One Touch" drive for a couple of years now.It still functions acceptably.

I recently bought this current 750G Maxtor drive that I use primarily for backing up mp3 files (music) and photos. The price and capacity were right.I thought the most recent version of software would show some improvements. You see--the last version of the One Touch back up software, and now, this most recent version does not "save my life"--as it says it will on the label of the box.

IF this software "saved my life" (that is, back up ALL files on my hard drive as I specify) then it would do the simplest of functions--specifically the back up of all the files associated with mp3 files in a folder. You see, the jpg album art and folder images are part of the mp3 files. Without those images, folders lose their thumbnail identifiers. Without those images, moving files back and forth between drives and any other player program, whether it be iTunes, Windows Media Player, or to an ipod, those images are lost FOREVER.OK, maybe "forever" is not quite right, but if you have 10,000-20,000 songs on your ipod and on your hard drive, it is very time consuming to go out and grab those image files again.

So much for saving a life or even an image associated intimately with another file or folder.The problem, noted on the Seagate/Maxtor site and by other reviewers here, is that the software will NOT copy "hidden" files (even if they are unhidden in the folder).In fact this the list of files not automatically backed up...
* Operating System files that are in use
* Hidden/System Files & Folders - this includes Microsoft Outlook Data & Personal Files (e.g., *.PAB and/or *.PST files)
* Microsoft Compressed Folders
* Microsoft Encrypted Folders
* Offline Files
So you can forget about using the OneTouch software for backing up your music library (at least with the image files attached) OR your Outlook email/contacts folder (*.pst).I also noted the software was not copying zip files (compressed?) or even some Acrobat files (huh?).Oh, you CAN copy these files manually by dragging them from one location to another... but when you have a couple thousand mp3 files, that is pretty tedious!

Supposedly, SafetyDrill --another program from Seagate-- will copy these types of files, but since it was not provided in the box...there was no way to test it.

I just did not understand.So I persisted... I tried any number of methods to create a back door so I could possibly "save my life" and could not get anything to save those (un)hidden image files. I played with my file folders thinking that it was just the fact that the files are "hidden"... so I unhid them in both folders on my computer and the One Touch folders. No luck.

So with a functioning drive, that I WANT to use... I finally just dumped the software and am using a program called "filesync", available with a quick search on the web. (and well worth the $15 requested).

Why would Seagate provide such a disabled "save your life" program tocustomers who expect to be able to use the software for something as simple as backing up their ipods?

Would I recommend this drive to someone?Certainly not to a beginning computer user.I might if the experienced purchaser knew up front that THE MOST COMMON USE (back up of music files with image files in the same folder) is severely lacking using the Maxtor software... AND they would need to purchase another back-up program to do things properly.This lack of functionality is disappointing, especially when the Seagate/Maxtor site is loaded with commentary going back over a year about the same lack of functionality.Makes you wonder if they will listen when more serious problems might occur.

(More customer reviews)My first 400gb elements I bought on Amazon has an on/off switch, which I like very much.About two months later, I bought another one from Amazon.It DOES NOT have an on/off switch.However, when my laptop is turned off, the drive shuts down too, and boots up when the laptop boots up.And the first one only shuts down via the switch.They both work extremely well.I have downloaded 350GB of MP3 music onto one of these drives all in one session.I have some case fans which I rigged up for 110v a.c.I use them when I have a lot of files to load or transfer to different drives.I put one fan in front of these drives and one behind them, as I have had the drives running full time for up to 20 hours at a time.The drives are stacked one on top of the other.They stay very cool with these fans.I have had absolutely no problems of any kind with these drives.They don't freeze up, slow down after reaching max heat levels, shut down mysteriously, and even without the use of the fans, they don't get excessively hot.They are both used daily.If you need an intermediate size backup system, this is one you should have.They have never let me down.

(More customer reviews)Duo pairs up with 2 WD HDs, which is simply noisy when operate. Speed passing though USB2 is alright, USB driver works like a charm. Security + backup software is a plus.

However, RAID never worked! I've been fighting with Tech support for days (It will take you about 50 mins. waiting on the phone to get to them each time.) and nothing works.Tech support simply push back the problem to customers and indicated it's your "windows" problem.

1. Raid driver can't find the USB hard drive.On the first public version of driver, it creates C++ error. The newest version simply can't find the hard drive.

2. If you are looking for mac support, there is none. The newest driver "README.TXT" indicated that, newest driver only works under PowerPC chip with OSX. So if you have intel core duo, good luck to find the RAID driver.

3. When I first spoke with tech support about RAID problem, they said it might be my windows.Actually, I've tried 7 computers with 3 of them are clean installed. Nothing works! the RAID software simply CAN NOT FIND ANY DEVICE on the USB, even your hard drives are working and running.

4. Tech told me the RAID is hardware raid, however, it requires "THE DRIVER" to work. Where, most of people on the net will tell you, "THE DRIVER", never worked. So, if you are unlucky just like me, you have to run 2 USB drives at same time instead of any RAID/MIRROR support on this thing. they simply don't have it yet.The newest driver 1.01 was dated as far back as June 2006, and there is no newer driver existing so far.

Buffalo's linkstation gaves me nice experiences (only down side was the transfer rate), but this Drivestation Duo turns me away. I'll never going to be business with Buffalo ever again in my life. It's too painful to call in and gets no results whatsoever.============== UPDATE Feb/27/07 ==================================
After a few weeks of problem solving, I am able to make the RAID work now.

Since the utility came with CD or "buffalo" tech support suggested version was never worked. (RAID utility simply can't find the Hard drive itself), and MAC raid utility only support OS 9 or older.

Instead of killing myself without a RAID feature which I paid for, I went to Japanese website to download the newest RAID utility.First of all, if you have the connection problem like I do, and you only have windows machines, I have to tell you the sad news.Even Japanese (NEWEST update) RAID utility still won't work under windows XP SP2.

Instead, You need an IntelMac (like macbook/pro), hook up with firewire (only works under firewire connection), and fire up the Japanese version of the RAID utility.It will find the Drivestation Just fine.

If you don't read Japanese, basicaly, there are 3 options under the RAID menu, and once you opened up the utility, you see 2 partition (2 separated HD on the list), and you will have 3 options.1st, remain 2 Partitions. 2nd, Make them into one 500GB partition. 3rd, make into RAID 1 configuration.

Here is the tricky part!! Since windows RAID utility didn't work, You have to make your RAID configuration on MAC through firewire.However, You HAVE TO USE USB2.0 connection to the Windows machine after this.After you configured your DriveStation into 500GB or RAID 1, You will either see a 500GB HD after reboot the Drivestation on Mac, OR!!! You will see nothing (Partition worked, but MAC has no longer access the right partition.)

So, You need to use USB 2.0 connection back to Windows, and fire up the "Format program" that came with original CD. (Sorry! No MAC utility here!).Here! You can delete/create/format a partition.And after format the Drivestation into FAT32, both of your PC/MAC will see it and work perfect after that.

Since the front pannel did indicate 1, 2 as first and second hard drive in LED. If your RAID 1 worked, they both will access almost at same time when you are using the Hard Drive.Fully RAID 1 baby!!

If you made them into a Huge 500GB, it works the same too.. 2 Hard Drive will access at same time (Almost).It is much better than 2 separated Hard Drives.

============ WARNING ===================
This is personal testing result.Actual procedure might facing difficulty I haven't encountered.So, if this method don't really work for you, please don't contact me.Just call Buffalo-tech then.

Be honest, I think Buffalo-USA did a bad job of re-writting the entire utility.They simply didn't do a full testing on it.Japanese one didn't work as well.You will also see FW update.. I didn't try that at all. This is the catch.. if FW fails.. You never gotta know how to get back to the original FW in the first place.

(More customer reviews)The LaCie 250 GB Rugged Hard Disk with FireWire 800, FireWire 400, and USB2.0 is a great unit that is ideal for those with fire-wire ports built-in to their laptops and computers.Unfortunately while most Macs have fire-wire built-in, right now the majority of Windows based laptops do not.That is changing as more PCs are getting them built-in.I need drives for several computers, including Mac, Windows and Linux boxes.Suffice it to say that this drive is definitely a must own if you have a Mac and may even be worth installing a fire-wire card if you have a PC.

While it is no secret that I love my WD hard-drives, the LaCie drive definitely outperforms it in a few key areas.So depending on your needs, it may be well worth the small premium to pick up the LaCie.

Don't get me wrong, when it comes to value and best performance for your buck the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Intense Blue) is a great option. Like the LaCie, it has a variety of color options including black, red, white and blue. Of course changing colors on your LaCie is much easier than buying a different color WD drive when the mood strikes.The rugged color bands are interchangeable.The WD also doesn't have the "rugged" edges of the LaCie, and it only has USB 2.0 which makes it impractical for certain situations.

Namely, if you want to run something off your external drive, such as a program or a media library, the performance of USB alone is just not as good.Just ignore the specifications and numbers, because from first hand experience I can tell you fire-wire definitely performs faster for large backups or regular data access.It's just faster.

The LaCie is also more versatile.Even if you are planning on using it for USB only right now, having the fire-wire means that if you get another computer that is capable you already have the option built in.That may be a stretch, but if you are planning on getting a new laptop within the next year from one of the big brands you can pretty much plan on them having fire-wire.

Now there are a few slight advantages that the WD has over the LaCie.The LaCie is definitely slightly bigger and thicker, and it's also more expensive.Still, the difference is small enough that the pros will probably outweigh those small cons, especially for Mac users.

- Priced higher than WD on a dollar per gigabyte basis
- Larger GB capacity drives not widely available from LaCie though they are offered by WD
- Form factor is slightly larger and thicker than the WD passport drive
- Warrantee is also shorter than WD
- The *rugged* thing may be oversold, and I don't recommend dropping it
- Still no standard Linux drivers or software included, but there are workarounds
- Have to spend your cash to get a case that should have been included

Conclusion

This drive is great or those who want a portable drive for backups or running a media library application like iTunes or Media Center.I only wish they sold it in larger capacities. The premium price may be worth it for those who need that extra edge in speed offered by fire-wire connectivity.

(More customer reviews)I've wanted an external hard drive for months now, and I thought for sure I'd get one of the Western Digital My Book drives -- very cool book-like design.But after reading all the middling reviews on the My Book drive, I finally elected to look elsewhere.The Seagate drives had good reviews (esp. the 360Gb drive, not so much the 500Gb drive, tho I don't understand why the disparity exists because they're essentially the same thing, only one is bigger).

The Seagate drive arrived last week so I fitted the FireWire adapter to the drive and set to work backing up each of my 4 computers.Worked just fine in every case using Norton Ghost (I didn't use the software that came with the Seagate drive).I was getting about 35Gb of data movement per hour using Norton Ghost to create the backup files and FireWire to transport them from my wife's laptop to the Seagate drive, but be aware that includes using disk verification after the backup is finished.I had similar results backing up three other computers in my home.

The drive is quiet!I can't really hear it, especially over the fan noise coming from my computer.

The drive is cool-looking!The amber glow -- which so distressed another reviewer that he had to put duct tape over it -- is hardly that bright at all, certainly nothing that ought to trouble anybody.Far better than those bright blue LED lights in use on so many computers and peripherals.

The drive has a great warranty!It has a five-year warranty.Note that he Western Digital My Book has only a ONE YEAR warranty.If you have confidence in the quality of your product, you'll have a longer warranty.

The only complaint I have, and if I could have, I'd have given this product only 4.5 stars instead of 5, is that you have the awkward design that requires the user to fit into the base of the drive an adapter that will either make the drive work with USB 2.0 or with FireWire 400.It's not a big deal, but I could see that somewhere down the line, I'll want to back-up using USB, but I won't remember where I put that dumb USB adapter.It would have been much nicer to have both USB and FireWire plugs in the base together.

Seagate did a nice job with packaging:The instruction manual essentially just said, "Plug it in, and it'll start working" (which was correct).It comes with both FireWire and USB cables, but be aware that the FireWire cable has big plugs at both ends, so it'll connect fine to most desktops, but for connecting with laptops, you'll most likely need a separate FireWire cable with the small plug to fit into the laptop FireWire port.

In all, it's worth 4.5 stars, but I can't do that with Amazon's rating system, but I like the drive a lot so I'm giving it the full 5 stars just so you'll consider this Seagate drive when you're in the market for an external drive.It's worth your notice!

We external-drive users need to be able to remove the drive if USB/FW connections/controllers fail, so we have other options to remove the drive for data retrieval (so your own data is not out there on the loose) and reuse the case. Unlike the predecessors which had aluminum cases, this unit cannot be easily opened. I have not x-rayed it or attempted to open it, but looks like this thing was assembled with plastic clips and is not designed to be reusable.

Other than that, Buffalo has generally made fine products.

Not so fast. I initially tested this drive and it sounded a bit funny. I didn't think twice about it and put it away. It does not spin up now--after sitting there for two months.

I have noticed that many of the current Buffalos use Samsung drives. I have noticed that the Samsung drives have a slightly higher than usual DOA rate.

We external-drive users need to be able to remove the drive if USB/FW connections/controllers fail, so we have other options to remove the drive for data retrieval (so your own data is not out there on the loose) and reuse the case. Unlike the predecessors which had aluminum cases, this unit cannot be easily opened. I have not x-rayed it or attempted to open it, but looks like this thing was assembled with plastic clips and is not designed to be reusable.

Other than that, Buffalo has generally made fine products.

Not so fast. I initially tested this drive and it sounded a bit funny. I didn't think twice about it and put it away. It does not spin up now--after sitting there for two months.

I have noticed that many of the current Buffalos use Samsung drives. I have noticed that the Samsung drives have a slightly higher than usual DOA rate.
