Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server Review

Belkin F8T030 Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server

The tech support was prompt and knowledgeable. The unit has good range which seems to be limitied more by the class of the PDA that is trying to acess it.

HOWEVER this product has a VERY serious design deficiency that makes it UNSUITABLE FOR USE at any price!!!!Belkin tech support has confirmed that there is no way to reset the unit to the original factory settings if you can not acess it via the built in web manager.Belkin tech support also confirmed that there is also a flaw in the unit that will cause some user passwords to not be accepted.Once this happens, this will essentially require returning the unit for complete replacement. I know of no other networking product that has such a serious design flaw (all other networking devices I am aware of have at least a reset button somewhere or a "power on" sequence to handle these inevitable situations). It also makes the unit unusable for any scenario where if you make a change to the settings, you can not afford to be without it for the time to swap it out.

An obvious problem for you, me and Amazon here!

D-Link 24-Port Rackmountable Gigabit Switch Review

D-Link 24-Port Rackmountable Gigabit Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just ordered one of these as part of a project to rack up and centralize my home network.Prior to this I had several switches in my basement daisy chained together. With this new D-Link switch I was able to rack this up with some nifty vertical rack arms and in conjunction with a 24 port patch panel and rack cable organizer get everything very nicely organized.

The Amazon description for this switch is out of date. The current version of the product indicates that with the latest power supply it is up to 73% more efficient than similar non green D-link switches. Also worth noting is that the face plate on my unit is a silver color, not the white appearing face plate in the product photos.

I connected this switch on my work bench with a Kill-A-Watt power meter and with nothing else connected this 24 port beast is sipping just 3 watts. With five gigabit devices it is using a miserly 7 watts.Even fully loaded, according to the specs this switch will not use more than about 19 watts. The switch has features that will throttle down power consumption based on device connection speed, cable distance and whether a port is active or not.All of this means that you can build out a very robust home network without leaving something running 24X7 that is consuming a lot of power.

I was close to ordering the competing Netgear product (JGS524) however the Netgear has two fans in it (noisy and prone to failure) where as this D-Link switch is fanless! This is a big deal, as the fan is often the component that will go out over the long term with a product like this... not to mention the noise you will experience if you are anywhere near the device. The Netgear does have a "lifetime" warranty (and better warranty support) where as the D-Link has a 5 year warranty. With no moving parts, and if hooked up to high quality surge suppression the D-Link box should last for a very long time without problems.

Performance with this switch is excellent, I get rocket fast transport between all of my devices. It's worth noting that this is an unmanaged switch so you cannot break your network up into VLANs or do cable diagnostics, etc, with this switch. For its purpose though of providing a super fast home or small office network it is offering a tremendous value.T

Highly recommend it!

X350 Desktop Virtualization Review

I wanted to share multiple terminals through one computer and was looking at a server based solution. The high cost was deterring me, so I was asking friends around for a cheaper solution. One suggested this company and X350.

The concept is elegant, one computer, and three additional monitors/keyboards/mice attached and each can have independent sessions.

Some notes:

1. Card needs PCI slot, does not work with PCI Express
2. The Installation software on CD is old. You need to download the latest software from the website ( I learned this the hard way)
3. Can cause conflict with Windows security updates, and takes time for company to release new software version.
4. Does not support Vista 64 bit, works only on 32 bit version ( again found it the hard way)
5. The software is not as robust as it can be, issues still remain, I am working to sort it out.

Having said this, the company claims to have many installations in the world and they probably run fine. If there is an IT guy to look after hardware/software issues, you may be OK. If you have to do it on your own then just be prepared for some frustration during set-up. I am sure there will be cases where things run smoothly, but documentation and compatibility information can definitely be better.

Would I do it again- yes, given the cost savings. Will I add more cards- yes, to expand the current system. Now that I know some pitfalls, I will be more careful next time.

Xtenda X550 5-USER Desktop Kit Review

Xtenda X550 5-USER Desktop Kit

These will likely work ok if you meet every requirement that they state, at the website. My mistake was to want more then 15 ft (5M) of cat 5 cable between the host and the terminal. Or a special cat6 that has individually shielded twisted pairs for 10m(33 ft), don't forget to find a way to ground the shielding.
I barely got 24 ft from standard cat6. screen was off center and the trackball wouldn't work half of the time. and the longer the cable the worse the screen sync lines that travel up the screen.
And Never try to plug into an Ethernet device like a switch or router. you are totally dependent on the proprietary software and cables. If these are within your parameters, it may work well for you.
When they say 5 meters they mean it - nothing worked with a 6 meter cable (cat5)
The cable length (and not mentioning it until after installation when I was troubleshooting the problem) was a deal breaker.I Lost the job, and the client. sending it back.
