Dell Inspiron Mini IM10-2863 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook Review

So far I'm very impressed with this system. The keyboard is just awesome for a netbook, and with Windows XP Home, it's really not all that slow.I've had several heavier applications open at the same time and didn't really have any problems.Aptana Studio (My web development IDE of choice), FireFox 3, TrueCrypt, XAMPP (Apache & MYSql) just to name a few.I've only got a few real complaints about this computer. One, the touchpad is horrible. It really shouldn't have had the two buttons integrated into the bottom of it, it's not possible to have your index finger navigating and thumb clicking at the same time. It's quite annoying (I bought a cheap travel mouse). The other complaint I have is the video playback quality. It's really just not that good. It's actually quite choppy for the most part if you try watching videos in fullscreen.I have however found a workaround for this, and it makes the video quality look awesome (see notes at the bottom).

Pros:
Awesome 10" display
Great almost full-size keyboard
3 USB ports (one of the left, two on the right)
2.6lbs, it's super light
Decent speed for a 1.3Ghz system.Cons:
Cruddy video playback (mostly full screen problems)
Horrible Linux video driver support (Intel GMA 500, google it)
Battery life is a little bit lacking compared to other netbooks.
Touchpad needs to be redesigned.

Video Playback Notes/Quality tweak:
As far as the cruddy video playback is concerned, the one thing that I have found to help with this is the usage of a third party media player.A friend of mine turned me on to a player called KMPlayer [...] which comes bundled with just about every video codec ever made, and not to mention that it's portable (it runs off of a thumb drive).Anyway, you can customize the video rendering to allow for a much smoother playback of videos even on this slower model. Here's what I do:

Right-Click in the main KMPlayer window
Click on "Video (Advanced)"
Click "Video Renderer" up near the top.
Down near the bottom select "Enhanced Video Renderer".
Be amazed at how much better your videos look.

The playback quality that I received from doing this rivaled my full-size desktop with a real graphics card in it.This is definitely the most redeeming quality about this netbook because it really unlocks the ability for this to be a good portable media player.Cheers.

Dell Inspiron Mini IM12-2868 12.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook Review

Dell Inspiron Mini IM12-2868 12.1 inch Obsidian Black Netbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PROS: big, vivid screen; nearly full-sized keyboard AND trackpad; very slim and light despite the 12.1" screen; works great with XP

CONS: glossy case is print-prone; some shrunken buttons on keyboard; 3-cell battery life is low, need the 6-cell; RAM not upgradeable
----------------

Are you looking for a light, slim laptop that mimics the Macbook Air at a fraction of the price? Then the Dell Mini 12 would be a great choice for you!

I wanted the readable/usable screen size of 12.1 (10 might be the sweet spot for some people, but not for me -- see for yourself firsthand) with a good keyboard, large trackpad, and light weight.Another important consideration was battery life of at least 5+ hrs (more on that later).

The Dell Mini 12 hits all of those points. The 12.1" screen causes some debate about its classification as a "netbook," but its Atom processor and low price definitely puts it in netbook territory. The screen is lovely, with true colors, no blotches or dead pixels, and decent viewing angles. The Atom processor (mine is 1.6 GHZ) is more than capable for basic web surfing, light typing, and reading PDFs in a Windows XP environment. And the price (I got it for under $400 at the brand name's Outlet store) is superb, if you shop around.

The one featured on Amazon is decent, though it has the slightly slower chip; however, most online reviews downplay the effect of this clock speed decrease.Realize that it has 1GB of RAM, which is suitable for basic netbook applications on XP.But no expandability exists with this current setup -- that may be a downer for those looking to soup up their netbook into performance ranges of a normal laptop or desktop.

Another knock against the Amazon one -- it comes with only the 3-cell battery. That's good for 2-3 hrs with some serious power conservation (Bluetooth off, screen brightness at maximum low), but the 6-cell gives you 5-6hrs easy.It adds a little bulk to the rear end, but this baby's back is still appealing and makes it easier to hold, if you know what I mean...

Another unexpected but appealing feature to the Dell Mini 12: it is completely fanless.Somehow it manages to stay cool to the touch!Over time, I have found the silence and relative coolness to be big pluses.

In the end, the key thing for me is usability.I found the 12.1" screen to be kind to my eyes and the trackpad/keyboard combo to be virtually normal-sized.The engineers at Dell were still able to package the Mini 12 into a ridiculously slim, light case. The closest competitor here would be the Samsung NC20, which is chunkier, louder, warmer, and more expensive, albeit with a much bigger hard drive and RAM expandability. For my purposes, the Dell Mini 12 is perfect. It just might be the same for you.

Acer Aspire One AOA110-1995 8.9-Inch Seashell White Netbook - 2.5 Hour Battery Life Review

Acer Aspire One AOA110-1995 8.9 inch Seashell White Netbook - 2.5 Hour Battery Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As other reviews have said, the initial setup process is SLOW. Be patient, and put the laptop aside until it is done. Once the install was done, then the ubiquitous Windows Updates (28 in all for me), take their pound of flesh, er, time. Once it finally is ready for you, it boots and runs reasonably well. After a few days of use, I removed the McAfee antivirus 60 day trial that was included with the PC and installed Avast! free antivirus instead. Response is noticeably quicker with this lightweight antivirus compared to the bloated McAfee.

Overall, the laptop is great value and very convenient size. Performance is about what you would expect with such a slow processor, but it's quite useful for web browsing (I use Firefox) and lightweight word processing. It wouldn't suit many people as their only PC, but for those trips when you want to pack lightly, or a day on the road or at a remote office, it's great. The 16 Gbytes of memory in the hard-drive-free version doesn't sound like much, but the installed applications take much less than half of this, so it's pretty reasonable unless you want to load a huge Itunes library or lots of videos.

For it's intended application as a super-portable web browser, it's a perfect fit.

The Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure that packs in 47 million transistors into a single chip sized at just 22mm (0.87 inches), and it uses just 2.5 watts of power--less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor--for excellent battery management. The 1 GB of installed RAM (512 MB onboard memory and one 512 MB DIMM, 533 MHz)can be expanded to a maximum of 1.5 GB of RAM,

The 8.9-inch screen has a WSVGA resolution (1024 x 600) and support for up a 262K color depth. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses shared video memory with the main memory. Acer's CrystalBrite display technology guarantees the best possible visual experience by preventing the diffusion of surrounding light and internal ray. Compared to normal TFT LCDs, Acer CrystalBrite technology is able to read color coordinates more accurately, thus minimizing distortion and creating high-fidelity colors in all environments.
This notebook includes an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound compatibility, and it includes two stereo speakers.

Purchased this netbook from Amazon Monday evening and received it on Thursday; fast shipping Amazon. This is a super netbook for $299.99. Color is matte blue and white which shows no fingerprints. Actually like the color better than I thought I would. Build quality is solid as you would expect from Samsung. Screen is matte not glossy which I also like. Very little bloatware to remove. I bought this for my wife who travels and has to give powerpoint presentations. Needless to say she loves this little thing. It will certainly make her travel easier, as this netbook is so small and light(2.8 Lbs). It is a simple netbook; doesn't come with all the bells and whistles, like bluetooth, 1.3 camera, etc. The wifi card found my AT&T Uverse device quickly, so I was on the internet immediately. Battery life is as advertised; it took me about 6 hours to run it down from initial full charge. Wife likes the touchpad, too; I use the usb mouse. If you want a solid, simple netbook with middle of the road battery life, you will like this little gem.
Out of the box, fully charge the battery(light on left front edge of netbook will go from orange to green when fully charged). Next boot up and it will lead you quickly through windows XP installation. Then configure it with programs like you want it. Then enjoy. It is a great product and a steal at this price.

The value-laden Samsung N130 netbook features an Intel Atom N270 processor, comes with Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 and features a matte white finish. A non-glossy 10.1-Inch screen gives you plenty of room to IM, adjust your playlist, and speed through your favorite applications. The 160GB HDD gives you space, while the built-in 0.3 MP webcam makes video chats easy. And the N130 weighs just 2.7 lbs., so it's light enough to hit the road whenever you're ready.

After a couple of blue screens and the keyboard failing on my, up until now ,trusty 4 yr old Dell laptop, I went shopping for a new one. Its amazing how much computer you can buy for the money now. I decided that since I mainly check email and generally just use the computer at home for the internet, that the smaller netbook size computer would be nice. I looked at Dell,Toshiba,Acer,Asus,Lenovo, and this Sony. Specs wize, they are all very similar. I liked the idea of a larger 250G hard drive on this Sony and the other specs seemed to be up to par with the rest of the lot. The one thing that sold me was the constuction quality and the styling. It is very clear from the moment you open the screen that this machine is a notch above the rest in terms of quality of construction. Its very sleek and modern looking in appearance and very light in weight. The screen is extremely bright, much brighter than the Dell in battery mode. The keys all fucntion well and are well spaced even though it is, I believe a 89% keyboard in size.
I think the key to this computer performing up to the standards that its look implies is contingent upon uping the RAM to the 2 gig max it will take. If you watch the video on youtube on how to do it its simple. Just be sure to remove all the screws so that the keyboard comes out easily and then switching out the RAM located under it becomes literaly a snap. you can buy the Ram from Amazon for around $40.00 or so and put it in yourself. Be sure to have the battery disconnected and THEN press the power button to discharge all elecricity.
Don't concern yourself abnout the fan noise as mentioned by other reviews as it's really nothing and barely audible in use. If you are looking for a thin ,light weight computer with great styling and functionality you will not be disappointed.

Samsung N150 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue) Review

Samsung N150 10.1 inch Netbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the Samsung N150 after much research and have not been disappointed. The main reasons for my choice were: 1. Matte screen, which I prefer over the glossy screens of other netbooks I've seen in stores, 2. Battery life, 3. Matte blue finish of cover doesn't show fingerprints, 4. Positive reviews of keyboard, 5. Super-quiet fan. And so far, all of these features have lived up to my hopes. Other nice features: silky smooth operation of lid hinges, and the built-in webcam and microphone.

One downside as noted by a previous reviewer: the initial setup of the hard drive and software takes a LONG time (one hour, more or less). From what I've read, there are other netbooks out there with much shorter setup times. Fortunately, you only have to go through setup once with this netbook. Be patient, and you'll get through it fine. Just don't expect to be doing useful work until the day after your box comes in the mail.

Another negative is that the processor seems relatively slow (compared to desktop PCs or full-size laptops) at some operations like booting, doing data transfer, and unpacking/installing software. This is just because of the processor, which has been optimized for low power usage. And I imagine that other netbooks have the same shortcoming, so it's no particular knock against the N150. It's the price all netbooks pay for being small and power-stingy.

Having said that, once the Samsung gets itself booted and ready to go, it does fine at web browsing, email, word processing, and video watching. I was able to watch a streaming Netflix video with no problems. Speakers are decent, but a battery-powered iPod speaker like an Altec Lansing iM237 plugged into the headphone jack gives a much better and louder sound.

Suggestions:

1. Allow at least one hour for initial setup. Be patient.

2. Either turn off the automatic "Windows Update" in the control panel, or change the frequency of updates from "every day" to "one day per week." The automatic update hogs the processor each time it runs, and you'll be wondering why the netbook is running so slowly every morning.

3. In the Start menu, type "Task Manager" in the search box and put a shortcut for the Task Manager in your Start menu or on your taskbar. Get familiar with the Task Manager because it shows you CPU usage, memory usage, and what processes are running in the background. When the blue "hard disk" light starts flashing and the netbook slows down, the Task Manager will tell you why.

4. In the Start menu, type "gadgets" in the search box, and install the "CPU" gadget on your desktop. The large dial gives a constant readout of CPU usage, and the small dial a readout of RAM usage. Another good tool for monitoring the CPU workload. When the needle is pegged in the red zone (e.g. at startup) you're not going to get much done. Wait til the needle drops out of the red zone before trying to do any other CPU-intensive tasks.

5. Forget the installed McAfee antivirus program and download the free "Microsoft Security Essentials". It's free and it works great. Saved my other laptop from numerous attacks. Also download the free "Malwarebytes" program.

6. Forget the MS Office "trial" software and download the free Open Office, which works just like MS Office and can open MS Office files, and an save in MS Office format. (Open Office also plays better with this netbook than the included MS Works package. I downloaded Open Office and then uninstalled both MS Office and MS Works.)

Some owners have reported that replacing the 1GB RAM stick with 2 GB RAM improves performance. Before going that route, I tried the Windows ReadyBoost feature, which Microsoft says will improve performance in some operations. Exactly which operations is not clear, and when I tried using ReadyBoost with a 4GB USB emory stick, I wasn't able to discern any difference.

All in all, the Samsung is a competent netbook in a nice package. Two thumbs up.

Update: After upgrading to 2 GB RAM and having used this netbook for a couple of weeks, I like it even better. Upgrading the RAM definitely helped performance. And the matte screen is definitely better than the glossies, and the keyboard is much better than my friend's Asus eeePC keyboard. The trackpad is just too small for more than occasional emergency use, though, so I use an iHome mid-size wireless optical mouse, which I love and highly recommend. Being freed from the tiny trackpad and the marginal 1 GB RAM makes this little machine a pleasure to use.

PS--If you do install Microsoft Security Essentials, be sure to follow their instructions for uninstalling other antivirus programs first (in this case, McAfee). I apparently failed to do so, and eventually noticed an oscillation in CPU usage as shown by the Task Manager when the CPU should have been idle. A Google search suggested a conflict between two competing antivirus programs. I went back and uninstalled McAfee by using the "appwiz.cpl" command per instructions on the Microsoft Security Essentials site, and problem solved.

Gateway LT2023u 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 3 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

Gateway LT2023u 10.1 inch Black Netbook - 3 Hours of Battery Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am so impressed with this little Gateway Netbook.I had no trouble registering my name as a user without a password (see previous review).Immediately, it recognized my wireless network and asked my if I wanted to join it.All I had to do was enter my Encryption Code and I was online!I also bought the Anytime 7 Upgrade and loaded it with ease.It did take about an hour (instead of 10 minutes) because there were 40 new upgrades to the Home Edition to download. It proceeded without difficulty and restarted itself.

I had no trouble getting used to the slightly smaller keyboard and the display is incredibly bright with excellent resolution. To save battery, the system dims the display if unused for a couple of minutes, but re-brightens as soon as you touch a key or the keypad. It also quickly goes to "sleep" to save battery power, but comes back after touching a key and clicking on your user name.

I also bought a wireless Logitech mouse to go with it.The transmitter is very tiny and fits into the USB 2.0 port of which there are three. Two more are left over for flash drives or whatever such as a CD/DVD drive.

The whole unit with the 3 cell battery is incredibly lightweight at only 2.6 lbs. and feels like a feather in your hand.I am looking forward to learning more about Windows 7 and surfing the net with this tiny netbook!

Asus Eee PC 1005HA-MU17-WT 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Pearl White) Review

Asus Eee PC 1005HA-MU17-WT 10.1 inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this computer basically for browsing the Internet and doing other minor tasks, listening to music, creating documents, watching TV and Movies etc. I haven't run any labor intensive programs yet (I've only had it for a couple days). I was going to play around with it for a while before deciding to upgrade to the 2GB RAM. So far so good. I haven't had any of the HD vibrations or excessive noise the other reviewer had. The battery life is phenomenal. I can't believe I can use a laptop this long and not have to be plugged in.

My only gripe is the Windows 7 Starter that comes installed. I have heard great things about "7" and couldn't wait to try it. For someone who likes to "play" with settings, configurations and stuff, the starter edition is not the way to go. You can't even change your desktop from the boring windows logo. I did not think about reviewing the Windows 7 Starter edition before buying. I may have to spend additional money upgrading to the Home Edition. If you are going to buy this laptop make sure Windows 7 Starter is for you.

All in all very happy with the netbook and will serve my purposes wonderfully, just wish I would have looked at Windows 7.
