Seagate 1.5TB Internal 3.5" Sata 32MB Cache Review

Seagate 1.5TB Internal 3.5' Sata 32MB Cache
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing to be mentioned, is that no one can rightfully complain about not having 1TB of storage, every drive, for the longest time is rated raw. When I formatted mine to NTFS it was 931.5GB, about 20GB more than I even expected.

The second thing to understand, is every drive model, from every manufacturer, has a pretty standard, and somewhat high, DOA (here I am considering DOA as literally dead on arrival, and 1 week and under) rate. If you receive a DOA, rate the replacement, or the service you received. If you get two DOA's, or get a replacement that is DOA; complain freely.

I have my drive (I have the exact drive, except I purchased it OEM) inside a Nexstar 3 enclosure (capable of recognizing all 1TB) via esata (you can use USB 2.0 with this enclosure as well). The esata run into my Asus G2S-B2 via a Rosewill Expresscard32 2-port esata expansion. In short, the performance I received, will reflect SATAII internal performance Identically.

The first thing to do, if your sata controller can handle auto-negotiation, is to remove the tiny gray jumper entirely, this will increase your burst performance.

Seq. Write - 70 MB/s Seq. Read - 105 MB/s Buffered Write - 59 MB/s Buffered Read - 62 MB/s Random Reading - 54 MB/s This drive is faster than the kin Seagate inside my laptop as the main disk. For those of you who can't use it internally or through esata, you will not see this kind of performance, the theoretical throughput of USB 2.0 is almost half the seq. read.

These tests are run through PC Wizard 2008, important, with the jumper installed. I didn't wish to assume people know what it is and know if their sata controller can use it removed. The performance is slightly better, but nothing substantial, without the jumper (it effectively dubs the drive down to sata 1).

I've basically torture tested this drive since I received it almost a month ago, it is perfect. Generally, I've found, drives fail sooner than later; this drive will most likely serve me for quite some time.

I recommend this drive over any other, if the performance is not higher (Hitachi's are snoozfest), then the fail rate is much much lower (Samsung's new 1TB is notoriously bad, unacceptably high fail rate). etc.

Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000340AS Review

Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000340AS

I bought 4 of these for a RAID5 setup in September. So far I've had two of them fail. One was a hard failure in which the controller stopped working completely, and the other is showing a lots of seek errors in the SMART data and tells me its going to fail soon. They both started clicking the heads (a symptom of a reset because of an error) just a few days after I got them.

Seagate replaced the total failure within a couple of days after I reported it, and now I have to ship them back the failed drive.I bought a new unit I'm expecting tomorrow as a spare replacement, and I will be reporting and shipping back the drive with all the seek errors soon.

The drives have otherwise been great, but 50% isn't such a good reliability statistic, and that's my primary measure for a drive.

On the other hand, I did buy two other drives from the same family, two ST3500320AS drives. They have been working away flawlessly in my workstation in a RAID1 setup since I got them.

Seagate FreeAgent Go Special Edition 640 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive and Docking Station ST906403FSA2E1-RK (Silver with Chrome Trim) Review

Seagate FreeAgent Go Special Edition 640 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive and Docking Station ST906403FSA2E1-RK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been through a few external drives - WD Pocket drives, WD raid drives, HP Portable media drives, but the Seagate Freeagent GO is definitely my favorite. It's a very thing and stylish drive which is very reliable (and fast!), with a capacity big enough to hold all of your documents.

Compared to my WD Raid and HP Portable media drives, this one is by far the fastest (copying data through the same connector at almost twice the speed). It's also very stylish and easy to take with you wherever you go.

I originally purchased the normal Freeagent GO drive but after filling it, looked into the Freeagent GO Special Edition for my next drive.

The drive and connectors are all the same - the difference is a chrome trim along the sides, and a glossy black dock. The trim wasn't important to me (although was nice to help differentiate it from my plain black Freeagent GO), but the Dock was very nice. The dock is only available (outside of this package) in a matte white/grey color, not really blending with any of the drives outside of the Silver color. The glossy black dock matches the style of the drive and really gives an overall great appearance.

The dock uses 2 USB ports (although only one is necessary - the 2 USB ports are for older computers which can't power and transfer data with 1 cable). You can also choose to connect the USB cable directly to the drive, bypassing the dock.

One big difference (to me) was the lack of a case for the drive - if you buy the Dock separately in stores, you get a free faux-leather case to hold the drive. This was actually the selling point for me when buying the drive in the first place. The Special Edition only includes the drive, USB cable and the dock (no case). Keep this in mind if you decide to go for this version!

The drive has not given me any issues so far - something I cannot say about my WD raid drive - it's quiet and does just what it's supposed to.

Which version would I recommend? Normal or Special edition?

For looks? Special Edition - the black dock makes a big difference.

If you don't care about looks, or don't plan to use the dock, go for the regular one. It's cheaper, looks just fine and if you do decide to get a dock later on, you'll still be paying less than what the Special Edition costs, and you'll get a case out of it.

We use these drives to back up our servers. These drives run for many hours a day in our server room.We have 8 of the 500 GB drives and 8 of the 1 TB drives. The 500 GB drives have been in service for several years.Prior to the Segate drives we had several USB-attached drives of other brands that failed under the heavy use.We have had no failures with the Segate drives.

I've had this drive, formulated for a ReplayTv DVR, for 6 months.I can't hear it and it accesses menus quickly. It has never needed a reboot, unlike the Hitachi CinemaStar in my Tivo HD, which is slightly newer and needs a reboot about once a week.I'm about to buy another DB35.3 for a second ReplayTv.

Average Reviews:

I've wanted an external hard drive for months now, and I thought for sure I'd get one of the Western Digital My Book drives -- very cool book-like design. But after reading all the middling reviews on the My Book drive, I finally elected to look elsewhere. The Seagate drives had good reviews (esp. the 360Gb drive, not so much the 500Gb drive, tho I don't understand why the disparity exists because they're essentially the same thing, only one is bigger).

The Seagate drive arrived last week so I fitted the FireWire adapter to the drive and set to work backing up each of my 4 computers.Worked just fine in every case using Norton Ghost (I didn't use the software that came with the Seagate drive).I was getting about 35Gb of data movement per hour using Norton Ghost to create the backup files and FireWire to transport them from my wife's laptop to the Seagate drive, but be aware that includes using disk verification after the backup is finished.I had similar results backing up three other computers in my home.

The drive is quiet!I can't really hear it, especially over the fan noise coming from my computer.

The drive is cool-looking!The amber glow -- which so distressed another reviewer that he had to put duct tape over it -- is hardly that bright at all, certainly nothing that ought to trouble anybody.Far better than those bright blue LED lights in use on so many computers and peripherals.

The drive has a great warranty! It has a five-year warranty.Note that he Western Digital My Book has only a ONE YEAR warranty. If you have confidence in the quality of your product, you'll have a longer warranty.

The only complaint I have, and if I could have, I'd have given this product only 4.5 stars instead of 5, is that you have the awkward design that requires the user to fit into the base of the drive an adapter that will either make the drive work with USB 2.0 or with FireWire 400.It's not a big deal, but I could see that somewhere down the line, I'll want to back-up using USB, but I won't remember where I put that dumb USB adapter. It would have been much nicer to have both USB and FireWire plugs in the base together.

Seagate did a nice job with packaging:The instruction manual essentially just said, "Plug it in, and it'll start working" (which was correct). It comes with both FireWire and USB cables, but be aware that the FireWire cable has big plugs at both ends, so it'll connect fine to most desktops, but for connecting with laptops, you'll most likely need a separate FireWire cable with the small plug to fit into the laptop FireWire port.

In all, it's worth 4.5 stars, but I can't do that with Amazon's rating system, but I like the drive a lot so I'm giving it the full 5 stars just so you'll consider this Seagate drive when you're in the market for an external drive. It's worth your notice!

For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.

Powerful storage device with a sleek new design.

This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler.

Share your content with others safely and securely. With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.
The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.
High Speed Synchronization and Sharing
The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.
Move files or other content with either USB 2.0, eSATA, or FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, and 3Gb/sec for eSATA, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.
The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

These two "Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 5900RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Desktop Hard Drive ST320005N4A1AS-RK-Retail Kit[s]" purchased on 6/9/2010 are truly great drives, holding an amazing amount of data. Further, there are two things I like about them being Seagate: 1-Seagate has a software which is built on Acronis True Home drive-cloning software -- but for free with Seagate drive use, and 2-Seagate has a program for drives in warranty -- and here is my experience: A past 1 TB Seagate Barracuda drive failed mechanically. Instead of going through the entire "I-send-it-there-you-evaluate-the-warranty-maybe-you-send-me-a-new-drive-maybe-you-don't-etc", Seagate has a program where I paid $19.99 (after running some tests online on my drive). No questions asked now--or later: They send you a new box, foam packing, anti-static bag, and pre-paid UPS shipping label -- with a brand new drive in it! You put your old drive in it, ship it back, and forget it! You pop the drive in they sent you! Voila! That's it! No hassles, no problems! This is why I have stuck with Seagate, have 3 1TB and 2 2TB Seagate Barracuda drives (having replace two 0.5 TB other-brand drives). I have had zero problem with any of my other Seagate drives -- and the one I did -- replacement was cheap, up-front, and totally hassle-free.

Average Reviews:

I recently purchased this drive for use as photographic image back-up storage, as well as a data back-up for my start-up drive.I removed the supplied "BounceBack Express" backup software since I already have the excellent "SuperDuper" application running on my Mac.The Verbatim 1 TB drive I received (Jan. 2009) actually contains a WDC WD-10EA 7200 rpm drive.I was able to easily partition it into 700GB and 232 GB partitions.

The drive is enclosed in a nice aluminum box with a polished black plastic front panel. The case does have a small fan that is inaudible in operation. There is only the one green LED pilot lamp and no "disk activity indicator".I like to know when my drives are working so I deducted (1) star for the lack of any kind of a activity indicator. There is one USB 2.0 port and the drive comes with a short (24 inch) USB cable. There is a rear panel on-off push-button switch which is flush with the back panel so is hard to spot if it's dark. A small "wall-wart" power supply is provided.

The drive is very quiet with only a little disk "head-seek" rattle when transferring large files.

The drive is rated at "up-to" 480 Mb/sec. transfer rates.I was able to achieve a write transfer rate of about 91 to 97 Mb/sec reading from my iMac's internal 230GB drive which was probably the limiting factor. As a fast, basic USB 1TB external drive, this seems to be a pretty good deal.It comes with everything you need, but nothing you don't need and has a 3-year warrantee.

Works for me!

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA1000100 (Black) Review

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA1000100
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This drive has a large capacity (by today's standards) and is very portable. It is convenient and highly compatible, not fast, but no slower than others in its class.

I seriously doubt the claim that buying a USB 3.0 adapter for the drive will speed it up noticeably, and certainly not 10x.I discuss this point below.[Update 8/10/10]See below.A discussion in the comments has convinced me that the optional adapters may indeed make a difference for transferring large files, such as video.

Pros:
large capacity for portable drive by today's standards
small and not too heavy, similar to competitive products
USB 2.0 offers terrific compatibility (Win, Mac, Linux when drivers are available)
USB provides power, so no power supply needed
very standard USB connectors on both ends of cable
compatible with Windows and Mac, and probably Linux (not tested)
[Update] ability to connect directly to TV for playing audio and video without computer via new dock [see below.]

Cons:
misleading claims of value of changing cables [Update: maybe not]
slightly larger and heavier than WD Passport
glossy top attracts fingertips (like Passport)
black case is hard to find in my black computer backpack, but probably other colors will be available in the near future

Neutral:
not fast, not slow, about the same as competitive products, slower than desktop drive or many 3.5" external drives, but far more portable

SPEED

The drive spins at 5400 rpm. This is not as fast as most desktop drives (which are 7200 rpm), but 5400 rpm saves power and runs cooler. It could be that 7200 RPM drives could not be used for an application like this without a power supply.Big drives make great archives, and archive drives don't need to be as fast as the drives that contain your system, programs, and files you are working on.

I copied my audio collection - over 50,000 files totaling 383 GB - to this drive, starting empty, and (separately) to an empty 500 GB WD Passport drive that had been freshly formatted. Both drives took about the same amount of time: a bit under 7 hours, with Windows 7 reporting 16-18 MB/second.The Passport was a little faster, but not enough to make a difference.

CHANGEABLE INTERFACES: QUESTIONABLE VALUE, MISLEADING CLAIMS [see UPDATE in this section]

The included "Personality Cable" allows this drive to be used with USB 2.0.You can get others for USB 3.0 and eSATA, and they CLAIM that this will speed performance by up to 10x.I haven't tried to be certain, but I sincerely doubt that this is true.

You see, USB 2.0 is capable of 57 MB/sec, yet my drive runs at 16-17 MB/sec, so it is performing at only 29% of the maximum USB 2.0 speed.I think the disk itself is the limiting factor.Although eSATA and USB 3.0 are faster interfaces, they can't make a 5400 RPM drive go 10x faster.By comparison, copying files from my internal 7200 rpm drive to an internal 10,000 rpm drive with direct SATA interface maxes out at 66-70 MB/sec, which is about 4x the speed.

By analogy, your car may be capable of 100 mph, but on a lot of roads you're only going to be able to go 25 mph.Putting a faster engine in the car won't help.In this analogy, the disk is the road, and the interface is the car.

Many manufacturers have been very misleading about disk speeds. They often rate the performance as that of the interface, when the device itself is significantly slower. The ONLY time any drive reaches the interface speed is when the data you wanted is already in the cache - that is, you just read it or wrote it, and now you're reading it again.Because the cache is tiny compared to the disk capacity, this is an uncommon situation.

In summary, I doubt the optional interfaces are worth buying.

UPDATE 8/10/10: This section triggered considerable and interesting debate in the comments, and I stand corrected. The upshot is that when transferring "smaller" files (jpg's, mp3's), the transfer rate may be limited by drive performance, but for "large" files (video files, say ~200 MB and larger), sustained reads may indeedmean that the drive is pumping out data faster than the interface, and using a faster interface such as firewire or USB3 could improve performance for transferring large files.

Also, I ordered an eSATA interface kit.For a system with SATA drives, I suspect this interface will be faster than Firewire or USB3, but I'm guessing.I will run some new tests and probably rewrite this review with the results.

CONNECT THIS DRIVE TO YOUR TV!

UPDATE 8/10/10: This is a cool innovation.A dock for this hard drive, which you connect to your TV to allow playback of photos, audio (including SPDIF digital audio), and video (including HD), is now available.See: Seagate FreeAgent Theater+1080P HD Media Player STCEA201-RK.That dock would be handy for people who don't have a computer connected to their home entertainment system but want to play back their media library there.

RELIABILITY

This is the most important feature, and only time will tell.New drives rarely have any problems, and I saw none. The drive has a 3-year warranty, less than some.*Many* years ago I had a Seagate drive fail and I lost data, and I have always held a grudge. With massive changes in technology and manufacturing, this grudge amounts to superstition, but I still normally prefer WD, because they have never failed me.

THE CASE AND WEIGHT

Early drives are always boring black, and they are hard to find in a black computer bag.The comparison drive I used was a red Passport, which is easy to find, and I like the color.

The case is slightly longer than the Passport 1TB, and the drive is a little heavier 9.9 oz vs 7 oz for Passport 1TB, or 41% heavier) , according to the manufacturer's specs.

PRICE

1 TB is currently the largest size for this kind of disk.Starting with the 250 GB drive, these drives have started at the same price when new, and then decrease as larger ones come out, which is a good thing for consumers. Now we get 4x the capacity of the original 250GB drive for the same price.

BOTTOM LINE

Drives like this are now commodity items, with little to differentiate them aside from their size, so you can choose based on color/style or price.Seagate is a name brand and the drive should last. The WD Passport is somewhat lighter, slightly smaller, very slightly faster, and a little more expensive. The product is very good but does not excel, hence 4 stars.

UPDATE: My claim that the drive works for Mac is based on what Seagate says; I did not test that.I have read in other reviews people who have said that it did not work for their Mac.In one case, the review said he was running OS X 10.3.x.Someone suggested that this drive is said to require a later version of OS X, like 10.4.6(?).Please note: I am not a Mac user and my memory of OS X version numbers is not exact. The point is, Mac users might have more luck when the latest OS is installed.

The device was purchased so that I could consolidate the contents of 9 PCsonto one drive.Only the NT systems had any difficulty in recognizing the drive, and some short internet searches later removed this small obstacle.

The Drive is performing excellently on my desktop as I sift thru the bits.Good Job Seagate!!Hoping to buy a 4TB drive in 2 yearstime.

I do a lot of work in digital video and photography, as well as document processing.

So far I'm very pleased with this new Seagate drive. This is the third Seagate drive I've purchased recently and each one has installed without a single glitch.
The main reason for this is the CD/Software that comes with each drivecalled DiskWizard. This program will setup your drive for you, and then mirror your current drive including Operating System or you can install it as a second drive. No more fdisk, format, etc., DiskWizard does all of this for you. (Check Windows version compatibility)
If you are replacing a drive, after running DiskWizard, set the jumper (if not using CS (Cable Select) to Master, remove your old drive, turn the PC on and it boots right up. Truly painless.
This drive has performed very well, is fast, and has a high capacity for storing massive amounts of photos, movies, and mp3's.

The drive seems to be well designed and quality is outstanding.
