Pros: well built, great speakers, overclockable 5730 (over 10000 3Dmarks in '06 after overclock), BEAUTIFUL screen, very well "thought out", not much bloatware and what is there is pretty useful, great button placement, keyboard feel, and mouse pad (especially the trackball mode on mousepad.) AMAZING lack of ghosting using supplied glasses, almost none using leftover theater glasses.

Cons: only 1: resolution. For games in 3D, it's.. fine. You lose half your vertical resolution, but when the screen is in motion you don't really notice (especially on movies) but if your goal is 3D photography, forget it. 1/2 of 768 is completely unusable for any 3D photography work: period.

All in all, a beautiful powerhouse with a great design, but the screen is the weak point. I'd wait for the HP 17" envy 3d solution: faster graphics to support the full 1080p rez.

IBM USB Keyboard with UltraNav ( 31P8950 ) Review

(More customer reviews)Simply put, the keyboards IBM puts in its Thinkpad line of notebooks are the best keyboards I've ever used.The keyboard here is just a large-model Thinkpad keyboard done up for the desktop with USB (with a built-in two-port USB hub).As such, it's perfect.I've wanted one of these since I first laid fingertips on a Thinkpad keyboard in 1997.

I'm a 100 word-per-minute touch typist who's seen a lot of keyboards -- I learned to type on a manual typewriter in the early 1970s and spent summers in college earning money as a keypunch operator on teletype-like keyboards.Before this keyboard, I was always on the lookout for a better keyboard.

The throw of the keys on this keyboard is a lot less than that of a standard desktop keyboard.And although the keys feel somewhat "clicky" (good for feedback), they're also relatively quiet (good for neighbors and family).The key layout is just like on the Thinkpad.I use the windows key a lot, but you can rebind one of the ALT keys in your operating system.

The keyboard extends a long way below the keys, just like the bigger Thinkpad's keyboards.I find this provides perfect palm rests for me.

I would've gotten this just for the keyboard.But there's also a trackpoint built in.And my fingers want to use it due to long experience on IBM notebooks. Of all the notebook pointer technologies, this is the only one that works for me.It works better than other company's implementations of track pointers (like on a Toshiba my wife had).Trackpoints don't bounce on planes or trains like the touchpads.Applying "belt and suspenders" caution, IBM also included a touchpad and two sets of mouse buttons (one high and one low); the pair closest to the keyboard are very convenient for dealing with the endless series of dialog boxes in modern applications.

All told, this keyboard helps my typing speed and accuracy.And even though I'm a speedy typist, my typing and mousing is still the bottleneck in most of the work I do on a computer.

IBM 31P9490 Keyboard for Thinkpad (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought it to extend my thinkpad keyboard experience, which was wonderful, to my new Toshiba TabletPC. It has about the same looking and layout as my old thinkpad laptop, which is what I expected.

However, the build quality is poor, compared to the one mounted on the thinkpad laptop and to the mac at my place. The functions keys on the top are shaky. I got a chance to detach some keypads from both the laptop and this keyboard. The plastic components suspending/mouning the keypads on this keyboard are poorly made, tend to be very soft.

These top-row keys are dull as well, not picking up every stroke. Especially bad is the "delete" key, which works only if I hit it with extra attention. I found this to be very distracting.

Also, motion components beneath the keypads seem not well lubricated, squeaking in quiet nights.

For a price around $90 and such a quality, I will hesitate to recommend it to anyone, except that you cannot live without a thinkpad keyboard.

Lenovo Ideapad Y550 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

(More customer reviews)First of all, I didn't purchase the laptop through Amazon. I got it
from Lenovo's website. Having heard good things about the company and
read some good reviews of their laptops, I decided to check them out
when I needed a new laptop. I've had my Y550 for 4 days and will post
updates if things change for the worse but so far so good.

The specs:
Intel Duo P8700 (2.53 GHz)
4GB of DDR3 memory
500 GB HDD
Standard integrated graphics card
Blu-ray optical drive

The price was very good. I couldn't find a better deal (about 900
bucks after the ecoupon) for such a powerful machine with a blu-ray
option.

The first thing I noticed after setting up everything was the
beautiful, bright, and crisp screen. It is a full HD screen and
it is wide/squat (1366 x 768), great for watching movies. The screen
is bright, crisp and glossy but has very little glare. It really does
live up to the hype I've heard about it though I do wish that Lenovo
offered a higher resolution screen option (like a 1920 x 1080). After
seeing a blu-ray movie on it, I came away not disappointed that I paid
the extra 150 bucks for the blu-ray option.

The setup was easy and the software gives you the option of deleting
all the bloatware that it comes standard with. (It took me about 15
minutes to deselect all the bloatware) I only selected two of them to
run on my computer as the rest was useless junk that will slow
everything down and I suspect useless to most people too.

Performance: The computer is quite fast so for my needs (email, net
surfing, word processing, etc), it is more than sufficient. The
computer has the newer DDR3 memory making it even a little more
impressive performance wise.

Looks: It has a beautiful design with black carbon-fiber shell and
white palm-rest. The idea is to make the laptop light (it is just over
6 lbs, and only 1 inch thick(!) which for a laptop this size, it
really is among the lightest and thinnest.

Sound: The speakers are pretty good. It has a subwoofer and two JBL
speakers that, for a laptop, gets decent sounds.

Cool factor: The Veriface security software works very well in
allowing one to use one's own face to log in (the computer's camera
scans your face and logs you in when there's a match to saved images
of you) and only takes a few seconds to set up. No problems yet with
it and it works like a charm. The carbon-fiber shell, though not
fingerprint proof, will make cleaning them off easier; just wipe once
with non abrasive cloth and they're gone. The Touch Inductive Panel
above the keyboard is pretty cool but only a little better than being
useless as far as I can see. The touchpad allows for expanding/shrinking
text size by sliding two fingers apart or together.

Batteries: There are several energy settings. Since this is a powerful
laptop and has a relatively large screen, it doesn't do well at all on
the highest setting unplugged as to be expected. But on the lowest
energy-saver setting (Super Energy Saver), you could probably get a
little over 3 hrs of internet surfing, email, etc. and about 2- 2.5
hrs of watching movies. But who wants to watch a movie on such a low
setting? The bright LED screen makes viewing a pleasure but on the
lowest settings, you will not get nearly as much image quality. So
this laptop is more like a desktop replacement in that area but get's
OK battery mileage for simpler functions.

Negatives:
-The thing only has two USB ports (Plus one eSATA port). For
a laptop with almost a 16 inch display, it should have more.

-Like I mentioned, Lenovo doesn't offer a 1920 x 1080 display
option. Watching blu-ray on a system like that with this type of
screen would have been incredible I'd wager.

-Like some other customers have mentioned Lenovo's customer support blows. I emailed them with some simple questions about my order and could not get a satisfactory answer. The answer they did give me was wrong as I later found out doing my own research. But since this has nothing to do with the product, I didn't deduct my rating on this account but the customer should be warned. Also, if you are buying from Lenovo's site, make sure you look into all the offers they have on sale such as the ecoupons they have scattered (hidden from view?) about on their site. You need to enter the code on the order page for the coupon when you order to get the discount. I got a 12% "employee discount" that cut the price of my laptop by 120 bucks but I had to dig through the site to find it. They sometimes also offer free shipping but search/hunt down and read the disclaimers (they don't offer this for several states). The Lenovo website was pretty disorganized and confusing.

-There's a lot of bloatware that comes installed on this laptop. Like I
said, remove as soon as possible because they are mostly crap and will
slow your computer down.

-The laptop doesn't come with backup software. Instead, it has a "One
Key Restore" function. I've had to use this function when I
accidentally uninstalled some good software that I wanted. I'd like to
have backup software, still.

-The touchpad takes little to get use to but that's not too much of a problem.

Overall, the computer has lived up to my high expectations and surpassed
them a little too!

[EDIT] It's been about 7 months since I got the computer and its harddrive has died. Lenovo's basic warranty took care of the problem in about a week's time. I hope it's just a problem with the manufacturer of the harddrive or that I was unlucky enough to get a crappy harddrive and not with Lenovo's fault. That's what I suspect but I have to update my rating from a 5 Star to a 2 Star since I don't really know what resulted in it.

Q700 Sff E5400 500GB Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Lenovo Q700 to use exclusively as a home theater PC.Its small size and black finish make an unobtrusive addition to the livingroom decor.My only complaint about its appearance are the bright blue flashing lights on the front which indicate power-on/sleep state, and disk activity.I'm looking for some translucent tape to cover the LEDs to reduce their intensity.

The Q700 is very quiet.The internal fan and hard disk drive produce a barely perceptible sound; nothing to spoil the movie watching experience.

It comes with a nice remote control for Windows Media Center, but like the remotes for my other HT components, it's been replaced by a universal remote (URC RF20). The supplied keyboard has a nice feel and a look of quality, but the keys have to be pressed down hard to ensure registration.I replaced the included keyboard and mouse with more appropriate wireless versions which I can use from the sofa on rare occasions.The Windows interface grahics and text is a bit to small to read comfortably from a distance of 10+ feet even on a large screen TV.

The Q700 comes loaded with Windows 7 and Windows Media Center.This was my first experience with either and I'm impressed with design and performance of these Microsoft products.My one wish is that it be possible to more easily customized the WMC menus to better match my HTPC setup.I prefer the MediaBrowser add-on for accessing my movie library.I was able to hide the unneeded WMC "Movies" menu item, but only by editing the Windows registry. This is not something a novice should expect to do.

The Q700 performs well as an HTPC.I cannot think of any situations where the Intel Dual Core was unable to keep up with the processing load.Any lack of responsiveness in the WMC interface can be attributed to the universal remote, not the PC itself.

The built-in TV tuner is very good.It performs as well as the my Samsung HDTV tuner. I use it as my primary tuner so that all TV functions are included in the WMC interface.I wish the PC was equipped with a second tuner so that I could watch another channel when a TV program is being recorded.As is, one has to switch over to the HDTV tuner to watch a different channel, a more complex operation than I prefer.

Another minor complaint about the Q700 is that the analog audio outputs are not parallel to the HDMI output.If a line is plugged into the green audio output jack on the back of the Q700, the audio to the HDMI is interrupted.The same is true for the front audio (headphone) jack.I wanted to feed the analog audio output to the whole house audio amplifier.As is, the lines have to be manually plugged in whenever whole house audio is desired.

Depending on your intended use of the HTPC, the 500 GB hard disk drive may not be adequate for storage of music and video.My movie library contains only 160 DVD quality movies which consume about 600 GB.I don't know how easy it is to replace the Q700's HDD with a larger capacity drive.I decided to include network accessible storage (NAS), expandable to several terabytes, to accommodate my expanding movie and music library storage requirements.

In my opinion, buying an HTPC like the Lenovo Q700 is preferable to using a standard desktop PC or tying your home theater into your office PC using an extender.A standard desktop PC is too noisy and consumes a lot of power compared to a device like the Q700.Using an extender (like the HP X280N, if you can find one these days) will reduce overall performance of your system and make unavailable some WMC features.

I highly recommend the Lenovo Q700 as an HTPC.

(More customer reviews)I recently needed to replace an aging Linux-based SOHO server.This system is actually used in a hybrid server/desktop role, with the desktop duties being limited to use as a light-duty secondary workstation mostly for web browsing and guest access.Thus it is important that an X server run reliably without affecting the overall stability of the system.On the server side of things, in addition to the usual file/print/DNS services, the primary function is to act as a media server for several networked Logitech SqueeezeBox audio devices throughout the house.

The Lenovo TS200v (model: 0981-12U) fit my needs almost perfectly: a reputable manufacturer, a reasonable base price, low power usage, enterprise-class HDD, ECC memory, and best of all, sold without an OS!I really dislike being forced to pay for an OS I'm never going to use.

As good as the TS200v looked on paper, I could find absolutely no firsthand information on how non-enterprise Linux distributions run on these boxes.They use a relatively new Intel 3450 chipset and Clarkdale processors with integrated graphics, so I was mildly concerned about hardware support in non-bleeding-edge Linux distributions.

For "production" systems that I don't want to worry much about, I prefer to run Debian stable.On laptops, or other machines with newer/less-supported hardware, my second choice is generally the current Ubuntu LTS.Since the TS200v has all Intel-based hardware, I was hopeful that, at the very least, I could find a Linux distribution that would run on it until either Debian or Ubuntu caught-up with the new hardware.

After the machine arrived, I was very relieved when my first attempt to boot it from a USB flash drive using RIPLinuX 9.8 (a lightweight system recovery distro) was fully successful.

However an attempt to install Debian 5.0.3 (lenny) met with issues due to the debian-installer's e1000e driver not recognizing the specific rev in the TS100v, a 82578DM.However I worked around this by temporarily installing an old e100 PCI card.After the install completed, the e1000e was recognized by the current lenny kernel.The real showstopper for Debian was that the Xorg server that comes with Lenny is too old to deal with the Clarkdale graphics.So at least for now, Debian stable wasn't going to be an option unless I wanted to run it in a non-GUI server-only mode.Some cursory research indicates that the next version of Debian, 6.0 (squeeze) may have better support for the hardware in the TS200v.

Next I tried Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).This install went very well and all the main devices, including the integrated graphics, sound, and network card work fine under Lucid.However access to ECC correction data via the Linux EDAC drivers doesn't appear to be working yet, but hopefully support will come in the future.(Note that the ECC memory does still provide some benefit even without being able to see the correction notifications in the OS.)

I then installed two additional 1TB Caviar Black drives, for a total of three drives in the machine.The third is in the spare 5.25" bay using some custom modified drive adapter rails.(Note that one additional 3.5" HDD is the most you can install this system without taking special measures.)I also replaced the read-only DVD drive with an Lite-On IHAS424-98 DVD writer and installed a 2 port eSATA PCIe card for use with an external SATA dock.

Using a kill-a-watt device I measured the idle power (with 3x7200rpm drives) at 49W, PF of 0.95.This is with the 'ondemand' CPU governor, which appears to be the default for Ubuntu 10.04.At full CPU load (using mprime) on both cores, the power usage peaks around 89W, PF 0.96.I'm running this machine in a room with an ambient temp of 67F (19C) and whether loaded or not, the fan speed does not seem to change.With the three drives, the sound produced is only just above the threshold of audibility in a quiet room.It would be safe to assume in hotter environments the fans might increase in speed and noise level.

Regarding the Intel Advanced Management Technology (AMT), I've only played with it a bit.This particular model only comes with the "Standard" AMT, the higher end i5-based models apparently have additional features enabled.Since it is not required in my situation I have disabled AMT after my initial experimentation.

I've had the machine several weeks now and it has been completely stable.Performance-wise it is a huge improvement over the previous machine which had a 1.8GHz Pentium 4 and comparatively sluggish PC133 memory.I am very happy with the value provided by this inexpensive server-class machine.
