X350 Desktop Virtualization Review

I wanted to share multiple terminals through one computer and was looking at a server based solution. The high cost was deterring me, so I was asking friends around for a cheaper solution. One suggested this company and X350.

The concept is elegant, one computer, and three additional monitors/keyboards/mice attached and each can have independent sessions.

Some notes:

1. Card needs PCI slot, does not work with PCI Express
2. The Installation software on CD is old. You need to download the latest software from the website ( I learned this the hard way)
3. Can cause conflict with Windows security updates, and takes time for company to release new software version.
4. Does not support Vista 64 bit, works only on 32 bit version ( again found it the hard way)
5. The software is not as robust as it can be, issues still remain, I am working to sort it out.

Having said this, the company claims to have many installations in the world and they probably run fine. If there is an IT guy to look after hardware/software issues, you may be OK. If you have to do it on your own then just be prepared for some frustration during set-up. I am sure there will be cases where things run smoothly, but documentation and compatibility information can definitely be better.

Would I do it again- yes, given the cost savings. Will I add more cards- yes, to expand the current system. Now that I know some pitfalls, I will be more careful next time.

NComputing L130 Nstation Ultra Thin Client Review

I wasn't expecting miracles with this product, and I didn't get any. However, for our office, we were looking to reduce the amount of PCs that we have to manage, and this seemed like a good idea.

There were some initial installation problems with NComputing's software and XP Service Pack 3.After some uninstalling and reinstalling a few times, I finally got it working.

This device allows you to run many office applications.Your basic word processor, spreadsheet, web browser, etc. work just fine. However, if you have specialized software that was written for the days for Windows 98, you may have some problems.

We weren't able to reduce the amount of PCs and support work as we had initially thought. But we ended up having a handful of users share a PC for their basic applications. That equates to maybe a 5% reduction of hardware and time saved upgrading specific PCs.May not be worth it to some.

The L230 version adds a USB port. It's said to work with thumb drives only.We tried connecting a card reader and a compact flash card. Our files came across corrupted some times. We hooked up an externally powered page scanner, and it works, albeit much more slowly than when hooked up to the PC directly (as expected). The L230 may be a better choice if you might need to have people use external devices.

We use these at a library I work at and they are super slow. We constantly have patrons complain on the computer speed. Sure they are good at keeping patrons from tinkering with settings but it is not worth it. I would not use these.

Xtenda X550 5-USER Desktop Kit Review

Xtenda X550 5-USER Desktop Kit

These will likely work ok if you meet every requirement that they state, at the website. My mistake was to want more then 15 ft (5M) of cat 5 cable between the host and the terminal. Or a special cat6 that has individually shielded twisted pairs for 10m(33 ft), don't forget to find a way to ground the shielding.
I barely got 24 ft from standard cat6. screen was off center and the trackball wouldn't work half of the time. and the longer the cable the worse the screen sync lines that travel up the screen.
And Never try to plug into an Ethernet device like a switch or router. you are totally dependent on the proprietary software and cables. If these are within your parameters, it may work well for you.
When they say 5 meters they mean it - nothing worked with a 6 meter cable (cat5)
The cable length (and not mentioning it until after installation when I was troubleshooting the problem) was a deal breaker.I Lost the job, and the client. sending it back.
