MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC 1GB Overclocked Graphics Card Review

MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC 1GB Overclocked Graphics Card

This is about the smoothest running video card I've had in a long time. The past 6 years ATI has been my exclusive video card manufacture starting with the ATI X800 pro through the Radeon 1GB 4800 VC. After about 2 years with my 4800 it was starting to get long in the tooth with some of the newer titles this year. I originally wanted to go with ATI's 5850 model but the increase in price and high temps turned me off from ATI's products. I looked at Nvidia's GTX 470 VC but like the 5850 high temps, price, and power consumption turned me off. I was going to settle on the 5850 until this card came out, much better FPS per dollar, cooler temps, lower power consumption, and better over clocking abilities made this purchase a no brainer.
Pros
Cheap for what you get in performance, easy to install and very stable drivers at this point. Went from 48 FPS on my 4800 in Dirt 2 to 74 FPS over clocked. Speaking of overclocking I pushed the core to 800 MHZ, shaders to 1600 MHZ, and memory to 3900 MHZ stable with low temps around 65C playing Crysis. In terms of performance over clocked it performs on par if not a little better than the 5850 depending on what game and probably about 10 percent behind the GTX 470 which is not bad for cards that cost $50-100 more. Biggest reason why I got this card is because of 3D displays coming out in the near future something you can't get fully using ATI/AMD products.
Cons:
1st, Nvida's control panel is sloppy and slow, while the drivers so far has proven to be stable I can't stand how unresponsive Nvida's control is. 2nd reason why I switched to ATI only the past 6 years was card failures from Nvidia. My Gefore 2 MX, Gefore 4 TI 4400, and Gefore 6600 GT all failed in 8 months or less, not good when you are paying $300 plus for some of those cards. 3rd, this card is not that much faster than my 4800 playing DX9 or 10 games. I would say default settings its only about 25 percent faster, overclocked probably around 30-35 percent. This not really a con, I just prefer buying mid to high cards when it becomes 50 percent or more faster than my current.
Other thoughts:
If you got $225-250 laying around and have a VC slower than a 4800 or Geforce 260 than this card is right one for you, it's fast, cheap, and efficient in both size and power consumption.

I bought this card about a year ago for my 2008 Mac Pro and it's been working fine, even though the official line is that a 2009 Mac Pro is required. No problems even after adding a second monitor, one on mini Display Port and one on DVI.

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1 GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card HD585XZAFC Review

This is a non-reference version of HD 5850. The reference version (HD585AZNFC) has the fan at the end. This one has fan in the middle. The Core voltage control is disabled in this version. I purchased this card from JR through amazon.com and at that time model no. was not mentioned in the title and they were displaying the reference version image for this card. Make sure to check the model no. (HD585XZAFC is non-ref version, HD585AZNFC is ref version) before deciding and not just the image displayed. The ref version usually comes with Dirt2 coupon but this one does not.

Performance of this card is excellent. Played NFS Shift at 1920*1080 with max settings and average FPS were 55 (After applying patch 1.02). Dirt2 averages 70 FPS, GRID averages 78, Tombraider Underworld averages 70 at max settings and 1920*1080 resolution.

Great value for money. This is the best card for price around 300(as mentioned in "Best Graphics Cards For The Money: May 2010" review at [...]. This card is a little over 10" in length (XFX states it at 9.5") so make sure you have enough space. Two 6 pin power connectors are required from power supply. It comes with double lifetime warranty which gives peace of mind. Make sure to register in 30 days from purchase otherwise the warranty will be reduced to just 1 year.

At base voltage and clock this card is at par with its ref version. Performance might suffer at very high clocks since extreme clocks can't be achieved without voltage control. The ref version is a bit expensive also. Overall I am happy with this purchase since I am not into overclocking. This card has enough power to play available games at max settings so overclocking is not needed.

Death in the Line of Duty
-------------------------------------

To start, even though this card is dead and Amazon won't accept a return, I in no way
blame Amazon for this fiasco, as the card was manufactured by XFX, not Amazon. I do however
have some choice words for XFX as the only replies I have received from them look like they were
written by a fifteen year old with no tech knowledge. The Card
------------------------
running the 5970 in an Antec 900
with an overclocked i7 920 (3.2 GHz)
and a ocz 700w power supply.

When this card performed, it did so admirably, pumping out massive performance that dominated
every game I threw at it including the currently (in my mind) best looking game Metro 2033, and
yes, before you ask, it can play Crysis!+Crysis- 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 55 fps average.

+Metro 2033- 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 39-42 fps average.

+World in Conflict 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 80-110 fps average.

-Average Temps before death at 38 % fan speed: 38c at idle.
-Average Temps before death at 50 % fan speed (loud but I use headphones) 60c at high load.So as you can see this card is blazing fast, and requires less power and produces less heat
than two physically cross-fired 5870s. So if you are looking for insane performance with surprisingly
forgiving power requirements,(eat your heart out GTX 480!) then look no further than the 5970.Conclusion
-------------------
I didn't think it was fair to rate this card low so I give the card itself a 4/5
but I think XFX should be ashamed of their support, so XFX gets a 2/5.

So buyer now you are at a crossroads. You know you want the blazing, steamy performance this card can
bring, but should you get it from XFX? Well that's up to you. Maybe my situation is a-typical of XFX's
customer service, but I feel that in recent years XFX has dropped the ball in the service department.
Well I'm off to once again try and initiate the RMA process, but so far I'm being given the run around.
Overall this is a great card as long as it doesn't run into any problems, because XFX won't be there for
you.

I have been building my own PCs for a number of years now. I have to say this is the most powerfull and most well founded GFX card I have ever purchased and used. I modded the card to a watercooled card with ease. Much easier then many of the NVIDIA cards I have worked with. I run 2 of these in Crossfire and my system more then maxes benchmarks. I get about 100 FPS with my system. If you are looking for a great GFX card for your system look no further. I am also able to run a 3 monitor setup form this one card with the Display port it has...EASILY ONE OF THE VERY BEST CARDS ON THE MARKET!

First of all, we all know this is one powerful card and it's up there with the high-end cards, but before you get too excited about getting this...

MAKE SURE OF THE FOLLOWING:
--------------------------
1. This card is huge, and I don't mean the days of how high-end AGP cards looked like (it's getting pretty ridiculous - makes cards like the 8800GT size look normal and everything else tiny), so make sure you have at least 9.5 inches diameter of clear space in your case.

* Most importantly, if your SATA ports are directly near, or right underneath, the PCI Express 16 slot -- with the ports facing towards you (looking at it from the front body/face of the motherboard) -- then most likely, this huge card will block your SATA ports! I had to forfeit two SATA ports for this card; I'll have to upgrade to a better motherboard, that is designed for big cards like this, if I want to add more SATA devices.

However, if you already have a really good motherboard, that was actually built with large graphics cards in mind (such as the EVGA X58 SLI Mainboard, then you shouldn't have a problem, since the SATA ports would then be facing towards the side direction (towards the right of the motherboard) away from the PCI Express slots.

2. Make sure you have enough wattage on your power supply! NVIDIA recommends a minimum of 550W with 38A on the 12+v line. You can probably get away with a good 500W power supply, depending on what other components you have (use a power supply calculator), but it'll be cutting it close.

3. The card requires TWO 6-pin power connectors to be powered. (The GTX 480 requires an 8-pin and a 6-pin) If your power supply only has one 6-pin power, this card comes with two PCI Express 6-Pin to Dual 4-Pin Molex connectors.

--------------------------
I was a bit worried of claims about the fan being really loud, but I did not find that to be the case.

I'm using EVGA's Precision utility to monitor the card.

When idle, the fan speed stays at 40% and is around 43C stable.

When playing StarCraft 2 (heavy playing/max settings at 1920x1080 - seems to only be using 50% of the GPU power)
the fan speed rises slightly to: 45%
temperatures rise to about: 70-75C (using stock fan and side panel 80mm fan)

The temperatures definitely do get up there. NVIDIA claims this card can still run max to 105C!

--------------------------
In comparison with the GTX480: (First number is for GTX 470; Second number/higher number is for the GTX480)
--------------------------
CUDA Cores: 448 vs 480
GPU clockspeed: 607 vs 700 (MHz)
Processor clockspeed: 1215 vs 1401 (MHz)

Memory clock: 1674 vs 1848 (MHz)
Memory size: GDDR5 1280 MB vs 1536 MB
Memory interface 320-bit vs 384-bit
--------------------------

Considering cost/performance, I would stick with the GTX470 over the 480. I've switched betwen ATI/NVIDIA back and forth, and so far I've ended up with NVIDIA. Mainly, I needed the CUDA cores to take advantage of CS5 Premiere's Mercury Engine (more CUDA cores the better, and at least 756MB memory and above is required to use that engine); it works great after a really simple hack. Also, I like that NVIDIA has better drivers and the card actually scales correctly on my HDTV - my ATI card has a problem with this. Lately, I've been more impressed with NVIDIA's presentation and innovations. The card has a mini-HDMI out, and the package includes a mini-HDMi to HDMI cable, as well as VGA-DVI.The EVGA GTX470 is one nice looking card as well (they have the best skin). EVGA has become one of my favorite manufactures of NVIDIA cards (#1 seller in US), not some generic unknown company, and this card has a lifetime warranty after registering within 30 days or purchase. This card is future proof with DirectX11 with tessellation capabilities.

I bought my GTX 470 in July 2010 and it came with standard brackets. EVGA later released a "High Flow Bracket", which has a little bit more opening, claiming it would reduce up to 5 degrees lower temperature (however, most buyers have claimed less) -- it makes you wonder why they didn't simply make the brackets that way in the first place? (smaller hole - less heat gets out; wider opening - more airflow. Duh?) It's really silly and nothing really amazing when you look at the "High Flow Bracket" design. Although EVGA states the bracket is "free of charge", for buyers registering their product (until the end of August), they still charge $5 to ship a small piece of metal; might as well be saying the bracket is $5 and they'll ship it free! (they actually sell it for $10 and free shipping under their accessories shopping page).

Personally, I think that is a silly "upgrade" and more of a profit gain gimmick by EVGA. Also, this card does not have a backplate (it's not necessary, but it adds a better overall look to the card and safety, by not having the PCB exposed on the other side. Now, it probably would be worth the Free-but-$5 shipping if they included the backplate as well. I believe the GTX 470 SuperClocked Edition comes with the backplate and bracket already installed, but it's an additional accessory that one would have to purchase separately for this standard GTX 470 (EVGA sells it for $19.99 under accessories - no, thanks). If EVGA is listening, they should provide the bracket and backplate to GTX 470 owners free of charge (without ridiculous shipping fees) - now, that would be amazing customer support.
