(More customer reviews)This drive has two issues that greatly reduce its utility. The first is that it contains a CDROM image that cannot be removed and mounts every time the drive is connected. This constitutes an annoyance and should be addressed by the manufacturer as it generates a great deal of volume on user forums. The second and more serious issue is that the drive disconnects randomly without dismounting the partitions on it. So far, this hasn't caused any data loss or corruption but the potential is there.

(More customer reviews)My new computer motherboard came with two of the new USB 3.0 sockets.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64x with a 16 GB DRAM and a Quad core Pentium i7 and an Intel Solid State Drive for my C: drive.

After unpacking the new MyBook drive, I connected the special USB cable that one needs to use.This special USB cable comes in the package with the MyBook drive. The end of the cable that plugs into the socket on the MyBook is "different", so you won't make a mistake and use an older USB 2 cable by accident. I then powered the MyBook drive up.Very quiet. Good thing it has an LED so you know it is on.

Finally, I started the computer and booted into Windows 7. Nothing to do but watch it boot. I now have One TB of incredibly fast and quiet disk storage. Win 7 assigned the USB drive a letter (F: on my computer) but I changed that drive letter assignment (using control panel) to make the MyBook my U: drive so that as I added and removed other drives on my system, the drive letter for MyBook would remain the same at all times and not confuse my backup software.

PERFORMANCE:

I previously had a 500 MB USB 2.0 MyBook connected to this computer. Top transfer speeds were in the 18-35 MB/s range.

Using the USB 3.0 MyBook, peak transfer rates I've observed so far are 147 MB/s and, depending on file size, seem to vary between 127 MB/s and 135 MB/s most of the time.This was measured while transferring a directory containing several GBs of video files ranging in size from 2.5MB 237MB.

The drive will idle itself when it has not been accessed for a while. Nice. When idle only the LED is working and it is flashing slowly to let you know the drive is connected but idle.

When you do need to access the drive it spins up quickly enough that it should not be an issue. I like having it resting idle when not in use since I use it for storage and I am not accessing it regularly all day long like I do with my C: drive.

The MyBook also senses when you shut down your computer and turns itself off and on with your computer, automatically.Only the LED is using power at those times and you can feel no heat at all coming from the drive while it idles.No power use, no wear on the MyBook HD.

I believe Western Digital really got their act together on this one and I recommend it without reservation for anyone with a USB 3.0 socket on their computer.I have found nothing at all to dislike about this external storage unit.

After the week long delay before it shipped, which I have come to expect when I try to take advantage of free shipping, the drive made it through the mail quickly. The drive was very well and securely packaged, typical of my experience with Amazon.No problems.

The USB 3.0 MyBook is probably not a necessity. But if you have equipment new enough to provide you with a USB 3.0 socket, it is probably a pretty modern and fast computer.Why bog it down with old USB 2 technology if you have a choice.

You will most certainly notice the difference. The increased speed (and convenience) is not something that you will have to wonder about.You will know right away you bought a winner.I know this purchase brought a smile to my face.

Western Digital My Book Essential 2 TB USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDBACW0020HBK-NESN Review

(More customer reviews)First, the packaging.Western Digital (WD) does an impressive job of securely packaging this hard drive with a minimal amount of waste. There's no unnecessary plastic or cardboard.

This 2 TB drive has to be plugged into the wall socket as well as powered with a USB cable. One of my major complaints about electronics products are the ridiculously short power cables. This My Book Essential External Hard Drive has an impressively long power cable - which is a plus for any experienced tech user. WD figures the customer is smart enough not to accidentally strangle themselves with a long power cord. So many products I buy have a cord that is so short as to make the item almost unusable. 5 stars to WD for trusting the intelligence of the buyers of their products.

Here are the results I obtained after testing out this drive:

The drive did not have to be formatted before I used it. It worked with my Windows XP-based computer right out of the box.

It took approximately 70 minutes to copy 35 GB of data from my old external drive to this one. This is impressively fast. The manufacturer claims it should take seven minutes and 42 seconds to copy 2000 standard MP3 songs onto the hard drive. These times are using the standard USB 2.0 technology. The drive is also designed to accommodate USB 3.0.

I didn't check out or try to install the backup software or the other extras that came with the product - these installation files are located already copied onto the drive. Another 5 stars to WD for not forcing this software onto the computer user with an automatic installation setup. My impression is that WD trusts the intelligence of the consumer to make their own decisions about how to best use the product. A toll-free international help line is available for anyone who does need some assistance with the installation of the hard drive.

The outside of the package mentions that the data on this drive is capable of being secured with a password and also comes with a 2-year limited warranty.There's almost no product literature included inside the package - only a small fold-out booklet which refers the customer to the company's website for a user manual.

A drive with this many features should probably come with more basic literature inside the box - such as, there is a physical cable lock port option - you can secure this drive with some kind of an external lock (the locking device isn't included with the drive) and there are no other clues inside or outside the package to explain this security option.

So this drive was easy to install right out of the box and it worked without any difficulties or technical headaches. I would definitely recommend this product.
