Velocity Micro GX2-W Silver Classic Aluminum Case with Side Window Review

Received this item via FedEx (which was the carrier this time for Amazon's free Super Saver shpg), on Tuesday 11/24/2009, after ordering it online at 3:00am EST on Sunday, 11/22/2009, so the delivery service was excellent.

This case is superb in construction. The materials, assembly, and finish appear first rate.Cutouts are clean, interior sub-assemblies are snug with no cheesy looseness or mismatches.Even the power button switch feels solid.Once the build is done I'll rate the "Ease of Installation", but considering that Velocity Micro supplies stand-offs, screws, (and the wiring for the 3 fans, power button, USB, Firewire, mic, media card reader, and headphones are already installed), and both sides of the case and the front panel are removable for full interior access, I am not anticipating any supplier-fault difficulties.Considering the prices for other all-metal cases run as much as $175 more than this item, I must say that I am positively impressed with the quality of the Velocity Micro GX2-W computer case.

As promised, I'm returning after the build to rate the "ease of installation".I literally had no problems installing or routing cables from the Corsair 750W PSU to the MSI ATX X-58 motherboard, the dual WD SATA HDs, and the dual Samsung SATA 22X DVD-RWs.There was room inside the case to install 6 X 2GB Corsair DIMMs (w/RAM cooler), the Cooler Master V8 for the CPU, and the dual PNY GTS-250 GPUs.There is no vibration from the fans, and though with a total of 8 fans in the case (including the 2-40mm built into the RAM cooler and the fans in each of the video cards), sound is easily at an acceptable level. There have been no problemsafter 2 months operation with any of the external sockets (USB, Firewire, mic), or the internal terminals on the supplied wiring.I have no complaints with this case and intend to use it again even if I have to drill my own holes in a few years to mount the next M.B.

A word on the styling, which appeals to me.The full side window is a nice plus since it allows me to easily check visually for any possibility of a fan failure, detached connection, etc.The unpainted, all-aluminum panels are an excellent heat radiator, and even the cushioned, large diameter feet, (which lift the case a half-inch off the supporting surface), contribute to heat dissipation from the underside.Personally, I like the unembellished, boxy form.It may seem retro compared to more streamlined, injection molded plastic housings, but to me it says solid, functional, and no BS frills.

SilverStone LC19B-R Aluminum Front Panel/1.0 mm SECC Body Micro ATX Media Center/HTPC Case - Retail (Black) Review

There are very few 1U HTPC cases on the market today; they're all either hulking monstrosities or Shuttle boxes that don't sit well with your other components. This case is of solid yet light construction, and makes the most of the tight internal space.

Power supply uses an external box, which is annoying but not really a bad thing because it removes a lot of heat (an HTPC's biggest enemy) from the case. The PSU connector may feel loose, but doesn't actually come out without some effort. Similarly, the front panel door feels loose and sloppy despite its metal construction and hinges.

Because it's such a flat space, don't expect to be able to use your stock CPU cooling; you'll need an EXTREMELY low-profile CPU heat-sink/fan; and most that call themselves low-profile don't come close to fitting. I've only found two that are actually low enough, and went with the SILVERSTONE Nitrogon NT07-775 CPU Cooler, which fit perfectly.

If your motherboard has the SATA ports in the front right corner (like most do), definitely buy 90-degree SATA cables, because the front panel drive mount sits right on top of them, and won't fit with a straight SATA cable connected.

Minus one star because it doesn't have (or have space for) a front-panel IR port.

Due to the limited space/airflow, I recommend using an SSD drive in this box. It also keeps it amazingly quiet.

Product Description:
With an increasing number of mobile CPUs moving to desktop systems, SilverStone engineers once again saw a great opportunity to create a case that would truly take advantage of this movement. The result is an amazingly slim 68mm (2.68 inches) tall enclosure that is still capable of accommodating a Micro-ATX motherboard and widely available storage components. For people who prefer to build a system that is easy on the eyes (and occasionally, out of sight) with power to do almost anything, the LC19 is perfect.

Antec Twelve Hundred ATX 12 Drive Bays 2xUSB 2.0 eSATA Audio Full Tower Case Review

Antec Twelve Hundred ATX 12 Drive Bays 2xUSB 2.0 eSATA Audio Full Tower Case

The outside of the box gives you a tease of what lies inside:the cool midnight blue lights; the viewing panel on the side of the case; and the mammoth fan that sits on the top of the case.

Opening the box reveals the sheer size of this case.1200 could stand for 1200lbs, 1200fans, or 1200 drive bays. The case weighs over thirty pounds. It stands almost two foot tall. The front of the case is populated with twelve...TWELVE drive bays.Fans are distributed liberally throughout the case.

Removing both side panels reveals the vast interior. You could easily stack 2-3 laptops inside the case.Looking for an SLI case? The Twelve Hundred has the space. It swallowed my nForce Ultra 790i Ultra motherboard and EVGA GTX 280 and still has space for two more GTX 280s.

The power supply sits at the bottom of this case.Don't even think about installing anything less than a 750W power supply.Preferably something with a LOT of connectors. You will need several 4pin connectors for all the fans.Fortunately, they can be daisy-chained.

Another key feature of this case is the ability to run cables UNDER the motherboard. The motherboard attaches to a metal plate in the case.Under that plate is a space to run almost all of the wires used in a PC.SATA, fans, front panel wires, and just about anything else. The plate has openings at strategic points where cables typically connect. The end-result is a very clean looking and professional installation -- which you can show off using the viewing panel on the left side of the case.

The twelve drive bays are grouped into 3 sets of 4.Each group has its own fan.Installation of 5.25in and 3.5in drives was easy and intuitive. There was a brief moment of confusion on my part when trying to attach drives to the bay.The usual "short" screws are not used with this case.Instead, there are 1" screws used to mount drives into bays.

About the only drawback is the rudimentary front-panel.It works -- but looks very plain. After the exotic design inside the case, the lighting, the fans, etc, the front panel is a bit of a let down.

Still, I am absolutely thrilled with this case.Highly recommend for gamers, high-end graphics workstations, or users with massive storage requirements.
