Logitech MX900 Bluetooth Cordless Optical Mouse Review

Logitech MX900 Bluetooth Cordless Optical Mouse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use this mouse with my Powerbook with built in bluetooth.
Pros:
- Control- I have used this mouse for first person shooter video games, which requires that a mouse be very accurate and fast, this mouse is both.Supposedly there is a theoretical bottleneck in the refresh rate with bluetooth mice vs. USB mice and Logitech's own RF mouse (mx700), but I did not notice it in my use, so its doubtful that in ordinary, everyday use that anyone can tell the difference between this mouse and other quality corded mice.
- Ease of use- The mouse took less than 10 seconds for bluetooth to recognize the mouse and configure it.The mouse is literally plug and play, without the plug.Of course I am using my built in bluetooth, the mouse also comes with a hub that will require some installation of software that comes with package if you don't have built in bluetooth.
- Comfort- like the other reviews say, this is definitely a right handed mouse and its probably the most comfortable mouse I have owned.Beware if you are left handed though. The mouse is also heavy due to the batteries, but less than an hour later my hand adapted and I use this mouse as naturally as any other mouse.
Cons:
- Battery Life- really battery life is not an issue if you remember to always put your mouse in the cradle when you are not using it.It does become an issue, however, if you plan on using the mouse for extended time periods without charging or if you forget to charge your mouse.Nothing is worse than rushing to finish a document and suddenly have your mouse run out of batteries.Does it defeat the purpose of a cordless mouse if you have to keep a normal mouse close by as a backup? But as I said, if you use this mouse for a few hours at a time and always remember to place back in the hub, you'll be all right.
- Bluetooth hub- For me personally, I wish they would sell this mouse without the Bluetooth hub, because I don't need it.But maybe you don't need it either. What is the use of buying a "cordless mouse" when you need a hub that is connected to a cord anyways? If you are buying this mouse as a way to save room on your desk, keep in mind that you will need to connect the hub to your computer if you don't have bulit in bluetooth. This not only adds a cable going from your computer to the hub, but also adds a cable going to the electric outlet so you can use the hub to charge the mouse. So by buying a 'cordless" mouse, you've actually added an extra cord and a hub that takes up space. The hub is nice, however, if you already have some other bluetooth enable devices such as a phone or PDA that you have not been able to take advantage of because you don't have Bluetooth on your computer.
- Laptop practicality- see above if you don't have bluetooth built in.Its even worse for a laptop to lug around a hub.But if you do have laptop with built in bluetooth and you want to use this mouse for portability purposes there are also some things you must be aware of.First off the mouse does lessen your battery life a bit by way of the bluetooth connection.Secondly there is no OFF button on the mouse (it instead turns off by sensing inactivity), so to be able to travel with it, you must take the batteries out and then put them back in when you take it out of your bag.
- Price- This is by far the most money I've ever spent on a mouse. If you MUST have a cordless mouse and you don't care about bluetooth for your other peripherals, then consider the MX700 for almost half the price. The MX700 also comes with a hub, but it isn't bluetooth (and therefore has less range and much less connectivity options that bluetooth offers). If you can live with the decreased battery life and taking the batteries in and out, this mouse does become worth the price for a travel mouse. It is also great for Powerpoint presentations, hook up the laptop to a projector and you can sit anywhere in the room and still use your mouse to point and control the presentation, unless the room is huge like an auditorium and you are on the other side.
Conclusion- This mouse leaves nothing to be desired as far as performance and comfort go.Ease of installation is another plus to this great product. However, before you purchase this product, ask yourself is this mouse practical for you?Do you really need a bluetooth hub?Is it really worth the price to you for the bluetooth wireless mouse vs the rf wireless mouse or even a corded mouse? If your answer is yes to these questions, then I highly recommend the MX900 mouse to you.

Logitech Z Cinéma Advanced Surround Sound System--2.1 Speakers Review

Logitech Z Cinéma Advanced Surround Sound System--2.1 Speakers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Logitech Z Cinéma Advanced Surround Sound System--2.1 Speakers

Logitech's Z Cinema Advanced speaker system is an incredibly designed high performance product.I own several Logitech speaker products, as well as others by Creative Creative GigaWorks T20 2.0 Speakers, Altec Lansing Altec Lansing FX5051 5.1 powered speaker system with USB connection, Klipsch Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Computer Speaker System (Black), Harmon Kardon Harmon Kardon SoundStick II 3 Piece Speaker System, and others.I can honestly say, this is a very impressive unit that is well designed for its task.If you have a media center PC setup, this set will make you very happy. Not only is the speaker system ridiculously powerful, the included software is a huge improvement over previous Logitech entries. The included remote rounds out the system and puts virtually all your audio and video applications at your fingertips.

This speaker system will fill a key market niche. The integrated satellite speaker and subwoofer design has more components than meet the eye. Each one-piece satellite speaker has an integrated mid-woofer and tweeter. So these are much more than traditional 2.1 bookshelf speakers. And when you position the speakers as directed and turn on the software surround sound, the sound quality coming out of these approach that of 5.1 systems.

Pros
+ Control your media center PC with a great all-in-one solution and awesome remote
+ Great performing speakers with a ridiculous 35 watts of RMS power per channel, 180 total RMS output
+ Beautifulblack and silver speaker and body design
+ Two tweeters and mid-woofers deliver surprisingly crisp sound with or without surround
+ 110 watt subwoofer is simply monstrous and easily fills large rooms with good acoustics
+ Awesome included remote with media center controls and great features
+ Nice integrated support for apps like iTunes, WinAMP, RealPlayer, Yahoo Jukebox, Pandora and Picasa
+ Remote can be configured to work with any multimedia app or to launch a different media player
+ Very sturdy cables and housing are designed to last a long time
+ Power converter integrated into subwoofer so you can connect with a regular power cable
+ Good looking orange back-lit volume and surround indicators on the right speaker
+ Very nice price point for fully integrated media center speaker system and controls
+ USB cable connection is clean and easy - requires on-board port connection
+ Included standard ports for headphones and auxiliary connections (3.5 mm)
+ Simple instructions and plug and play performance for basic use
+ Very modest hardware, hard-drive space and memory requirements for Logitech software
+ True 24 bit digital audio
+ hardware warranty

Cons
- Perhaps overly sleek minimal design could have been improved with physical power and volume controls
- Very heavy system requires extreme caution and should be installed with care and help if needed
- No simple volume controls on the remote, instead included in adjustment wheel
- Would have been ideal to include a few more ports, such as HDMI and S-Video, on the subwoofer
- Satellite speaker cables, while very thick, could have been longer for more configuration options
- No real expandability of the system is apparent; no obvious ports for other satellites or devices
- Many people still demand RF remote capability, this one is only IR
- Those who don't need the remote for Media Center PCs may opt for 5.1 systems at this price

Installation

Installing this guy is simple based upon the included quick start guide. What's cool is that even before the Logitech software is installed, once you make your connections and turn it on it's automatically recognized as a regular speaker system. You don't need Windows Media Center for this to work as a speaker system. This is awesome, and amazingly a lot of the Media Center buttons still work too.

But just note that in order to really take advantage of this guy you will want a Media Center capable PC, with either XP MCE Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 SP2B for System Builders, Vista Premium Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 or Vista Ultimate Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 installed.

Installing the Logitech software allows you to have desktop control of the speaker settings, including enabling surround sound. It also allows you to see the options to toggle between the different media applications, including iTunes and WMP among others. You can change settings and really get some control over your MC PC.

Physically installing this guy can be a challenge.First of all, this is a very heavy unit, mainly because of so many integrated components built into the subwoofer body. This is probably a sign of good construction, but handle with care.

The satellite speaker cables are long but could have been longer. The included diagrams give you the impression this was really well thought out for desktop or workstation installs. However, if you have a component center or cabinet for your stuff, you need to be patient and creative to get this set up.

The speaker cables could have definitely been longer to accommodate more setup possibilities. However, in terms of durability and shielding, these are some of the thickest strongest cables I've had come with a speaker system.

The subwoofer body has a silver rimmed front-piece that is not flush with the body housing. It's not a huge deal, but you have to kind of set it up either with the front piece hanging off your component shelf or rested up at an angle.Perhaps this was intentional based upon the lower configuration location noted in the included diagrams.

Sound

The power level output of these speakers is sick, to say the least. Some will be hung up on the "simulated" surround sound feature, a gimmick that has been tried before.Still, even though I was initially unsatisfied, I learned that if you set these up in the right acoustical setting it does perform well. There are two possible setups. For the basic workstation setup where you are literally seated at your media center PC, it works awesome. For those, who like me, want to set this up at an entertainment center, you have to center the system in a somewhat square room with unobstructed walls. Then you can get the surround sound feature to properly bounce in your room.

The total RMS power of 180 watts includes a 110 watts RMS Subwoofer with each satellite speaker producing 35 watts of RMS output via the mid-woofer and tweeter pair. That means your total power output is something like 400 watts, which is really in AV power range.

But the sound is clean. The built in amplifier is well tuned for multimedia sound applications, including gaming. If you have a good on-board sound processor, you should be fine.If you experience any sound effects, definitely take a closer look at your hardware and setup.

Some may feel that you can only get surround sound out of 5.1 Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System or 7.1 Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Surround Sound Speaker System systems.Still, I prefer 2.1 system with high quality components over 5.1 systems with small and disappointing satellites. There's a lot of nice 5.1 systems out there, don't get me wrong.I own several.Still, this system sounds better than a lot of those.Definitely have to test drive it to hear the difference.

Features

The power adapter is nicely integrated into the subwoofer, so you power up via a standard plug, no power bricks so many people hate. The speakers have right and left noted on the bottom. The right speaker comes to life when you turn it on with the remote. It has a nice orange read out that shows when it's on, the volume level and surround sound setting. The right speaker also includes jacks for headphones and auxiliary connections.

I really wished they would have also added physical volume and power control buttons and knobs. That way, when I want to hook up one of my MP3 players, I wouldn't need the remote to turn it on.

The Logitech software is actually vastly improved for them.I've not always liked some of the integrated software in the past, but this one was a huge improvement. The only minor negative I can give it is that it is automatically included in the startup folder even if you install the software with the option of not turning on at startup. So you have to manually remove it from your startup if you don't want it on all the time, a minor inconvenience.

The remote is the nicest part of this set functionally. For those with Universal remotes, you may wonder why you need this. This remote allows you to access your multimedia apps seamlessly. You can set up 4 presets, though it's less than intuitive.

You've also got some basic navigational buttons that allow you to go back to your previous app. There are included buttons for shuffle and repeat plays, and multimedia...Read more›

Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer Review

Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These little speakers rock! The sound is very clean and full, with a signal to noise ration >96dB.

The bass is very solid and deep for such a small driver, with a slightly noticeable peak in frequency response around 80Hz or so, depending on what you are listening to. I personally have to turn the volume of the sub to it's lowest level, or the bass overwhelms everything else. I think the greatest thing about these speakers is that even at a low overall volume level the sound is very full with plenty of deep bass (very similar to sound you get from a pair of large element headphones). A lot of speakers sound very thin at low volume levels as the bass rolls off, but not these, the little sub box just keeps thumping. One word of warning: The sub unit is NOT video shielded! Do not place it anywhere near your monitor, or you will ruin it, place it in the floor under your desk as recomended.

These speakers will bring the life back to your MP3 collection, and I won't even mention video games. Buy and enjoy!

Creative Labs PlayWorks 5.1 DTT2500 Digital Gaming Speakers for the PC and PlayStation2 Review

Creative Labs PlayWorks 5.1 DTT2500 Digital Gaming Speakers for the PC and PlayStation2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Playworks DTT2500 is an awesome deal for the current 5.1 surround systems available. Its easy to use control box allows you to switch from 4 point to 5.1 surround easily, and the cables that are included are long enough so that you can put the fronts and rears virtually anywhere. You'll also get a Digital DIN cable, which you can use if you have an SBLive! and would like all digital sound. Even though this is a small system, it is still able to pack a punch. Music sounds great on this system, clarity from the satellites with powerful bass from the subwoofer. Sound is very realistic as you move around in games. A realistic feel. As for movies, the DTT2500 system incorporates the 5.1 dolby digital sound, setting it apart from old technology such as pro logic. Movies, Games, Music: all sound great on this system...A real treat for anyone.

Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop Review

Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this cordless set for several days now. Here are my thoughts:

First the bad news. There could be better quality control on this. The first unit I purchased had a right-arrow key that would not work properly (all other keys worked fine). Another reviewer of this model here said that the space bar did not work properly on their unit. I liked everything else so much, I returned mine and got another unit, which is now working properly. The only other negatives I can mention are: (a) the temperature on the numeric keypad ALWAYS reads 77 degrees; (b) the Media key on the numeric keypad always seems to launch the default media player, no matter what I set it to (the media key on the full keyboard works fine).

Now the good news. I love the sleek look and modular design of this set, and it happens to match my HP Pavillion Notebook perfectly. I love the small USB receiver. I love the profile and tactile feel of the flat keyboard. I love the features that let you use this both on a desktop (in my case a docking station) or on the road with your laptop. The mouse is the least sexy of the three main parts, but nevertheless works well and the off switch is a nice feature; its main appeal is that it can be used on the desktop and as a portable laptop mouse. The wireless USB reciever, while small (a good thing), still has a very sufficient range.

All in all, this set has solved a number of problems for me and I strongly recommend it. Just be sure to check ALL the keys, etc. immediately when you get it and exchange it for another unit if any of the keys do not respond.

Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 710 Laser Review

Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 710 Laser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I admit, I'm brutal on keyboards.I work long hours from home and type quite fast so a keyboard tends to wear out after a relatively short period of time due to the constant absue I inflict on it.Everyone always gets a kick out of my keyboards with the keys worn smooth and few if any letters left on them.So far this one has handled my abuse quite well.I am impressed.

Combined with the fact that I am female and don't have large hands, keyboard/mouse selection is more limited for me.What I mainly look for in a keyboard is size (not too small, not too large) and it must not have a huge mouse.Keyboards nowadays are getting larger and larger complete with software that bogs down and tries to run your computer.Plus, I can't stand a huge keyboard taking up my desk space. Also, in case you noticed, mice are getting funkier looking as ever lately. There is only so much that can be done for ergonomics...so now they are trying to go stylish too.

When I picked up this keyboard off the shelf to test (it was about the 30th model I tried) I was instantly in love with it.My hands fit perfectly on the keyboard with my palms resting just on the front edge. With an overall depth of 7.5 inches it didn't hog up my desk either.Slim-line design without being compact.

Within a few days of purchase and use I started messing around with the options it has.Wow!I'm sold.I would have paid double for this keyboard.I like being able to adjust my audio by simply pressing one of 3 audio buttons on the top front (lower, mute, higher) and the email button right below that opens my Outlook for me.The magnifying glass brings up a side window with Google. But it doesn't end there - on the far right of the keyboard are 5 keys which have been streamlined into the design so you barely notice they are there - all for music. With one touch - my music player opens. The other buttons are for shuffling, next, back, and play/pause.Sweet!

On the other side of the keyboard are 5 other buttons similar to those - to do with picture editing.I haven't played around with those yet..but am looking forward to.Also there are special function buttons to use...then again I don't like installing companies software on my computer so I haven't experimented with those yet either.Maybe in due time.

This last one may seem a bit silly...but it's a darn good idea! The most common keyboard shortcuts are printed on the SIDE of the keys.So for instance, the keyboard shortcut for REDO is CTRL+Y.On the CTRL key is a little diamond and on the side of the Y key is a diamond with the word REDO.So at a glance if you forget a shortcut...it's there for you.Smart idea.

As I have a laptop as my main computer for now...I use this keyboard as an add-on.It's overall size and design allows me to put it in my laptop backpack bag with all my other gear and travel as I wish with ease for the ultimate work-on-the-go experience.I have not had ANY connection issues with this set unlike some other brands I've tried including my Microsoft Bluetooth set (major $$$ and a big disaster).

The mouse - simple, but quite functional too.It doesn't look like anything special. But it works quite well. Not too much...not too little. The scroll wheel works fine and the mouse precision is excellent (what you would expect from a laser).I have not had any surface issues with this one yet - and I do not use a mouse pad.

My only complaint I've had with this set is so minor it's barely mentionable. They moved my END key.As I am used to typing without looking at the keyboard when I reach for the END key it's not there. :)I'm sure within another month or so I'll be used to it...just irritated me for the first few days.

I give this set 5 stars hands-down.If I see it on sale I will for sure buy another one - with 4 computers in our house they will be replaced by this model one by one!

Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Laser (Black) Review

Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Laser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort Laser to replace my Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 (which I'd come to loathe). With the hardware, I'm very satisfied. The keyboard is a nice ergonomic version which I'd grown used to from my long-ago Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro.It's got a nice typing feel (not too hard, not too soft) and I've had no problems with it (the keyboard in the Microsoft Desktop 6000 dropped keystrokes). The only negatives I can come up with for the keyboard are that the space bar makes a bit of a clanking sound (which I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read about it here) and the palm rest does show the location of your hands from the oil residue (trivial really). The mouse is very comfortable and I've had no problems with it at all.

Where I have had problems is with the Logitech Setpoint 3.3 software.I'm using Vista, so since it's so new, that might be the issue (though the Logitech forums indicate the XP version has similar problems). In my case, even though the software loaded without trouble, I sometimes couldn't open the Setpoint program. It would basically hang when I attempted it.I also was getting no mouse status from the Logitech icon (keyboard status, yes -- mouse status, no).The forums indicate there's also a problem with the Secure Connect hotkey of CTRL-SHIFT (it conflicts with quite a few important keystrokes in Vista and applications) and with multiple keystrokes generating spurious letters.Because Setpoint was hanging on my system, I just uninstalled it and am running on the native Vista drivers (again, without problem).Without Setpoint, I'm lacking some features. But, I rarely use those things, anyway.

So, overall, I give the hardware an Excellent rating of 5 stars out of 5.However, because of the problems with the Setpoint 3.3 software, I'm subtracting 1 star.Still, that leaves an overall Very Good rating of 4 stars out of 5.Recommended.

2 year old Dell 8400, ...paid top dollars, ...nothing but trouble, ..now I can not get the thing to work, ... Did everything Tech support asked me to do, ..nothing. I get that solid amber light on the power button, and I am not sure if mobo is out or cpu is out. Try to get tech people to help is almost impossible, ..that's if you can get anyone to talk to you first. It is frustrating as this was my first Dell, and my previous computers were never a problem.I know Dell people know about this problem as I see lot of people with similar prolbem trying to fix their Dell without much success (sometimes cpu, sometimes mobo). They keep this up, they will lose customers and become like Tandy, Commadore or one of those, ....I am not a happy customer Dell!
