I grew out of space to store my videos and captured footage. I bought this large capacity drive to solve that problem, and it has worked.

It was very easy to install on my desktop Mac. It has worked flawlessly out of the box, and the price was very competitive. I have used it for about one month so far.

I read reviews which told me that it was a little noisy and I thought that this would not bother me. I agree that the noise is not loud. It is a mild continuous background hum. But I was wrong.... It does get to me. The noise never goes away, and is the only drawback to this neat, small footprint, shiny black repository of huge amounts of data.

Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000340AS Review

I bought 4 of these for a RAID5 setup in September. So far I've had two of them fail. One was a hard failure in which the controller stopped working completely, and the other is showing a lots of seek errors in the SMART data and tells me its going to fail soon. They both started clicking the heads (a symptom of a reset because of an error) just a few days after I got them.

Seagate replaced the total failure within a couple of days after I reported it, and now I have to ship them back the failed drive.I bought a new unit I'm expecting tomorrow as a spare replacement, and I will be reporting and shipping back the drive with all the seek errors soon.

The drives have otherwise been great, but 50% isn't such a good reliability statistic, and that's my primary measure for a drive.

On the other hand, I did buy two other drives from the same family, two ST3500320AS drives. They have been working away flawlessly in my workstation in a RAID1 setup since I got them.

Way better than the older freeagent external drive it replaced so far. It's smaller and lighter and the software to turn off the drive light actually works in Vista x64 now. What I really like is how the light stays off even when the power is completely off until you switch it back on. Previously you had to turn off the light every single time.Runs quiet and cool. No stuttering or failures so far. Pros - more than 2x as much space as my older external. Included software way better than older freeagent drives and works in Vista x64. Cons - doesn't come with esata cable so I wouldn't know if esata problems are as bad as suggested. It does come with firewire and usb cables and I'm using the faster firewire and works great with that as I said. Included stand crud and not worth using. Choice of white contrasting power and connection cables poor. Only 1.36TB formatted:( and if you are using nvidia nforce chipset even less space will show up in Vista due to bug:
1.5TB (ST31500341AS) or larger SATA hard drive only showing 1.1TB capacity in Windows Vista
[...]
Backup program is still not that great and not intuitive at all. I tried using the encryption feature and it's not worth using since it takes a long time to decrypt if you have thousands of files!

Don't know why this 1.5TB drive from Seagate is so much reliable than their normal 1.5TB retail drives?
The other 1.5TB Seagate drive I have installed inside my PC is making terrible screeching sounds like it's about to die anytime now :(
Already had to RMA several internal 1.5TB Seagate drives :(

This drive contains the same hardware as the other OneTouch drives. Please read the reviews under the 320, 500 or 750 version. You will note that there are some 5 star reviews by those who wrote an early review. Most users who have had the drive for several weeks (or months if it lasts that long) report huge problems that result in the loss of your files and the demise of the unit. You will not be able to retrive your data unless you are willing to pay thousands of dollars (yes I said thousands) of dollars to Maxtor's file retrival service. Reports are quoting $1700 to retrieve 30ogb. Please read the review elsewhere for more information.

Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N (White) Review

Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I saw this, I got pretty excited because I'd been looking for these features and they all came together in one drive.

Setup: The setup was easy and quick. Not a lengthy user manual but enough to get you going and more info on the disc. It asks for a driver update when introduced to new machines but I haven't seen a need for it after connecting through Windows Network (although it works with Macs as well, not just Windows). I haven't done much with the remote access but it looks easy to use so far.

Capabilities: It does everything I needed (i.e. let me get to my music, movies and pictures in one place). I watch a lot of downloaded movies on my Xbox 360 so it's nice to be able to put them on the big screen in the living room or open one from a laptop in bed without having to move the file or drive or have it take up space on both machines.

One of the big pluses beyond having your music/ movies available from any computer in the house is that you also improve your computers by freeing up that space - especially with desktops. I used to have gigabytes full of music on my desktop and laptop but now I have a lot more free space on my desktop so I don't need a new internal drive for that to keep it fresh.

Performance: It runs on ethernet and wifi so be careful with reviews on speed. USB connections run about the same on every machine but networking depends on your computer, your wifi standard and your router. If you have a fast machine, a good router and preferably N-WiFi, you'll get good speed. Of course, ethernet connection is really fast but I use wireless N and it's not quite the same but it gets the job done. Speed is only an issue for large file transfer but not actual usage. I haven't seen any hiccups streaming and watching movies (~700MB each) or listening to music.

Price: Some of my friends have NAS systems that house up to 8TB and run about $1,000+ but I'm not there yet. This one is great for the money - especially considering the price of a 1TB alone and the additional features.

Improvements: I wish file transfers were a little faster - I know that that depends on my router and computer as much as the drive, but you can't blame a guy for wanting a little more!

The write up covers a lot of the specs and details on what it can/can't do. This is just my view of the product. Hope it helps!

Buffalo Drivestation Duo 500 GB Desktop External Hard Drive HD-W500IU2-R1 Review

Buffalo Drivestation Duo 500 GB Desktop External Hard Drive HD-W500IU2-R1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Duo pairs up with 2 WD HDs, which is simply noisy when operate. Speed passing though USB2 is alright, USB driver works like a charm. Security + backup software is a plus.

However, RAID never worked! I've been fighting with Tech support for days (It will take you about 50 mins. waiting on the phone to get to them each time.) and nothing works.Tech support simply push back the problem to customers and indicated it's your "windows" problem.

1. Raid driver can't find the USB hard drive. On the first public version of driver, it creates C++ error. The newest version simply can't find the hard drive.

2. If you are looking for mac support, there is none. The newest driver "README.TXT" indicated that, newest driver only works under PowerPC chip with OSX. So if you have intel core duo, good luck to find the RAID driver.

3. When I first spoke with tech support about RAID problem, they said it might be my windows.Actually, I've tried 7 computers with 3 of them are clean installed. Nothing works! the RAID software simply CAN NOT FIND ANY DEVICE on the USB, even your hard drives are working and running.

4. Tech told me the RAID is hardware raid, however, it requires "THE DRIVER" to work. Where, most of people on the net will tell you, "THE DRIVER", never worked. So, if you are unlucky just like me, you have to run 2 USB drives at same time instead of any RAID/MIRROR support on this thing. they simply don't have it yet.The newest driver 1.01 was dated as far back as June 2006, and there is no newer driver existing so far.

Buffalo's linkstation gaves me nice experiences (only down side was the transfer rate), but this Drivestation Duo turns me away. I'll never going to be business with Buffalo ever again in my life. It's too painful to call in and gets no results whatsoever.============== UPDATE Feb/27/07 ==================================
After a few weeks of problem solving, I am able to make the RAID work now.

Since the utility came with CD or "buffalo" tech support suggested version was never worked. (RAID utility simply can't find the Hard drive itself), and MAC raid utility only support OS 9 or older.

Instead of killing myself without a RAID feature which I paid for, I went to Japanese website to download the newest RAID utility.First of all, if you have the connection problem like I do, and you only have windows machines, I have to tell you the sad news.Even Japanese (NEWEST update) RAID utility still won't work under windows XP SP2.

Instead, You need an IntelMac (like macbook/pro), hook up with firewire (only works under firewire connection), and fire up the Japanese version of the RAID utility. It will find the Drivestation Just fine.

If you don't read Japanese, basicaly, there are 3 options under the RAID menu, and once you opened up the utility, you see 2 partition (2 separated HD on the list), and you will have 3 options.1st, remain 2 Partitions. 2nd, Make them into one 500GB partition. 3rd, make into RAID 1 configuration.

Here is the tricky part!! Since windows RAID utility didn't work, You have to make your RAID configuration on MAC through firewire. However, You HAVE TO USE USB2.0 connection to the Windows machine after this. After you configured your DriveStation into 500GB or RAID 1, You will either see a 500GB HD after reboot the Drivestation on Mac, OR!!! You will see nothing (Partition worked, but MAC has no longer access the right partition.)

So, You need to use USB 2.0 connection back to Windows, and fire up the "Format program" that came with original CD. (Sorry! No MAC utility here!).Here! You can delete/create/format a partition. And after format the Drivestation into FAT32, both of your PC/MAC will see it and work perfect after that.

Since the front pannel did indicate 1, 2 as first and second hard drive in LED. If your RAID 1 worked, they both will access almost at same time when you are using the Hard Drive.Fully RAID 1 baby!!

If you made them into a Huge 500GB, it works the same too.. 2 Hard Drive will access at same time (Almost). It is much better than 2 separated Hard Drives.

============ WARNING ===================
This is personal testing result.Actual procedure might facing difficulty I haven't encountered. So, if this method don't really work for you, please don't contact me.Just call Buffalo-tech then.

Be honest, I think Buffalo-USA did a bad job of re-writting the entire utility. They simply didn't do a full testing on it.Japanese one didn't work as well. You will also see FW update.. I didn't try that at all. This is the catch.. if FW fails.. You never gotta know how to get back to the original FW in the first place.

Iomega eGo 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34269 (Jet Black) Review

Iomega eGo 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34269
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
***Jan. 24th - Just a comment on how "hot" it gets. I would say about 10 degrees more than room temperature. It is "warm" to the touch even after transferring files for several hours straight - (backing up 600gb)***

Unit Size: For those who can't visualize the measurements, if we compare the size to your standard keyboard its width spans the ~ to CTRL keys, its length spans the ~ to the 0 keys

Format: NTFS - which is not compatible with X-box. Approximately 110mb is used for system information.

Performance: Transfers better than 1 GB/minute if it connects properly.

Problems: It "locks up" during my windows boot process if turned on. If you turn the drive off during a lock up, windows will continue to boot properly. This has occurred on both my XP and Vista Basic machines.
I have not tested it with my Vista Premium system.

Furthermore, on my XP machine (which is "old" about 4 years) I sometimes receive notification that it is not hooked up to a USB2.0 port (even though it is).
When this occurs, the transfer rate is horrible. 1 GB/10 minutes. To resolve, I simply disconnect and reconnect the drive.

Testing Procedure: directly connected to a USB port - not through a hub.

Usage: I am using these drives (now I have 3 TB and one 0.5 TB externals from IoMega) to convert my videos to digital. They are connected to
my Acer laptop running vista basic using a 7port hispeed USB HUB by Belkin. Playback of video is fine. Transfer rate between drives using the hub is also better than 1GB/minute.

1TB Desktop Backup Esata Ext Backup System Review

1TB Desktop Backup Esata Ext Backup System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item because of CMS production reputation and encryption security. I was looking for storage of at least 1TB hard drive. It also has eSATA connection. The item came with BounceBack ultimate CD but no other information or instructions. When installed and hooked up, it kept backing up unnecessary for hours, even though the last backup was recently. It was not very user friendly to change to a different backup schedule. I was unable to figure out intelligently how to use the encryption. I needed to reboot my computer several times while trying to use it. I finally returned the item after 2 weeks of frustration. The return procedure to Amazon was outstanding and got my total refund within a week. I have been using Amazon for a long time and have not been disappointed with their service.

AcomData PureDrive 2 TB USB 2.0/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive PDHD2000USE
Average Reviews:

It's a cool looking quiet drive + it is priced reasonably. Also, while it was working with our Direct TV HD receiver, I was a happy customer. Then, after just 1 month, it died taking all our recorded shows & movies to the zone of "no return". The lights are still on, they even go from red to violet and then blue - yes, very entertaining and pretty ;), but the drive is unrecognizable. I bought a new eSATA cable, I rebooted my HD receiver numerous times, (not suspecting that a drive can possibly fail just after 1 month), I tested it on 2 different computers w XP OS & Vista + I used 2 different types of connections: USB and eSATA, but both computers failed to see the drive.

The worst part about this experience, (besides wasting money, energy & time) is non-existent AcomData's customer support.
Try calling (909) 786-4280. You have to press 1 for a technical support. Then every minute you will be prompted to press 1 again in order to continue to wait for the next agent, otherwise they automatically redirect you to their mailbox. You can't even turn on a speakerphone and do something else while waiting for somebody to show any signs of life at that company, because they want you to act as a monkey by pressing 1 as soon as you hear that their agents are busy helping other customers. Also, 2 times, after I had presses 1 ~ 5-6 times, while waiting for that mysterious customer support, I got disconnected. How more obvious can they be with this system? They could have put *do not disturb* banner on their web page & prerecorded a message, which would say: *we will try to make it very difficult for you to reach us, so hang up right now & thank you for understanding*. Email this company & see how long it will take them to respond, especially if you're requesting RMA number.

Very poor customer support, so you're taking a huge risk by buying any drives from them... If your drive breaks, it will take too much time & energy to get a replacement. I still haven't heard back from them & something tells me that it will take forever to receive a working product from them.

I would wait before buying anything else from this CA based company. I will stand by my 1-star review for now. I understand that sometimes things break, but when your product is under a warranty, I expect to have it replaced in a prompt manner.

If you decide to go forward with this purchase anyway, please back up everything you will be storing on this device.

G-Technology G-DRIVE Q 1TB External Hard Drive w/ eSATA, USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 Interfaces 0G00199
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With my 300GB drive too small I went shopping for a new 1 TB drive (the first time in 3 years). Over the years, I've bought several Seagate/Lacie externals and Seagate/IBM (now Hitachi) internal drives. Some drives are certainly faster and quieter than others; some are downright annoying but you just can't tell from the specs alone which I why I rely on reviews.

To my dismay, I discovered through my research that every brand/model of drive has received poor reviews. There wasn't a clear choice to make. It would seem that computer reliability has increased to the level that the hard drive is the weak link in the system now. Since my existing external was a Seagate 300GB firewire, I went with a 1TB FreeAgent from Seagate. Boy was that a huge mistake. Users are very unhappy with that product and so was I: it appears that Seagate doesn't build their firewire drives for mac compatibility anymore. If you need firewire, avoid Seagate.

Having a reliable backup drive is more important than ever so I crossed my fingers and went with G-Tech based on its feature set and my previous positive experience with Hitachi drive mechanisms (they own G-Tech).

Enclosure Pros:

- eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB2
- every kind of cable included (a rarity now and a great value for the money)
- large on/off button
- sturdy metal case
- no annoying fan
- the drive mounts to sled with a heat-sink that protrudes from bottom of case for improved cooling
- hundreds of ventilation holes at front and sides of case
- combo power/activity light
- attractive case

Mechanism Pros:

- very quiet drive
- fast 69MB/s read, 58 MB/s write (over FW800 w/ MacBook Pro 2007) - haven't tested eSATA yet
- HFS+ formatted for instant use on Macs

Cons:

- none to date

Some people have complained that the enclosure is larger than the typical upright design (5" x 9 1/4" x 1 3/4"). There are easily larger units to be found out there so I guess the complaint comes down to the fact that the drive is designed to sit horizontally on the table. I've seen the Seagate FreeAgent drives with their flimsy stands forcing you to lay the drive down on the desktop. The WD case seems to have the best design for vertical orientation but I don't think that's important as other features.

I'm very happy with the enclosure (G-Tech: please don't change a thing!). My advice to those that take issue with the size, is to get a G-Tech mini or other tiny USB2 based 2.5" drive. All 3.5" based externals tend to take up desk space one way or another.

Summary:

After buying this unit, I may never buy a drive in a plastic enclosure again. This is a solidly made unit compared to the flimsy offerings on the store shelves today.

This product is a winner: fast, quiet, reliable and cleverly designed. An excellent value.

PS. Why companies like WD even conceive of stuffing two already hot drives into the same raid enclosure with no fan is beyond me. G-Tech has a much better design for a raid enclosure.

Verbatim Professional Quad-Interface 1 TB (USB/ FW400/ FW800/ eSATA ll) Desktop External Hard Drive 96798 (Black) Review

I purchased 4 of these units new at the same time.Upon receiving them in 2 different shipments one was defective and returned. After talking with the company on several different occasions they refused to send a new unit, and instead sent a refurbished one.I could have purchased a refurbished one cheaper to start with.
Since purchasing several months ago,I have had 2 others crash/lock up.Multiple conversations with technical support have proved useless and even more frustrating.Out of the 5 drives that I have had, one came defective, 2 have crashed, and one more has crashed today. Being a professional photographer and having to depend on storage units, this is NOT one I would recommend.

Iomega MiniMax FireWire 800/USB 2.0 1TB Desktop External Hard Drive 34937 (White) Review

It has been the best purchase for a hard drive I've ever had. The main reason why I wanted to go for minimax is because I wanted a stackable hd for my Apple Minimac. Moreover I have a huge library of music and video files which I have been collecting for several years. Thankfully I havenot lost any of it. I did come across a few options from Seagate and Western Digital and also used them earlier. I wanted to try out the Iomega hard drive because some of my gadget-crazy friends had this. They do not select a hometheater or a flash drive or a hard drive in a frenzy. So on their recommendation, I went in for iomega minimax hard drive. I am happy that I am enjoying the huge space of 1 TB available to store all my media files. And it looks good than it does in the images. To begin with, I dint even have an initializing trouble - it installed easy and far quieter compared to most other hard drives I have ever used. That's indeed some relief to my ears and to those in the same room! With 3 USB ports I cant ask for more. Even as I use two of them at a time, I still have one left. With Firewire 800, the speeds are just right for a 1 TB version. Because of additional space, am also using it to store some professional data which I may need for quick reference when working from my home. The icing on the cake is the price. I am extremely happy that it comes with an easy cost tag. I mean I doubt if I can get a lower price with these functionalities intact!
